Title: EU vs US Savages - carb differences?
Post by Bluesman on 04/18/14 at 23:54:38

Guys - there has been a hint of a discussion as to whether the carbs differ between European and US Savages. Most notably, there seems to be a difference in the idle mixture department.
I want to clear that subject up. Now:

US savages obviously have a plug that can be drilled/ripped out to gain access to the mixture screw beneath. From what I have seen when looking closely at my carb (97 EU model) it looks like I dont have a plug, at least it doesn´t look the same as the pics posted here. This makes me wonder if EU Savages come with a fixed mixture jet (anti-tampering/environmental issue, maybe).
And...I don´t fancy drilling and tearing at it until I KNOW what I am dealing with.. I suspect this might be a fixed mixture jet, screwed in and glued in place. I certainly won´t attempt to screw it out (or in) before I know. That brass is brittle....

So, you guys with EU market Savages -  (mine is imported from Germany) - have any of you found out about this? IS there a mixture screw behind what COULD be a plug? Or IS the slotted thing actually a mixture screw?

I´ll post a closeup-pic of my carb later today. Just need a refill of coffee first :-)

I have two Savages in the garage just now, both are imports.
Mine:

Tessans:

Note that mine also has some extra "thingy" mounted to the right side of the carb..any ideas as to what it is?

(BTW...the frame number/VIN scheme also seems to differ on the EU bikes, making it almost impossible to date the bike. Our frame numbers seem to begin with the model code, and some numbers are omitted, IIRC, but that´s not important)

Both me and my dad has a savage, 97 and 96. It has been no problem to turn the mixture screw, and you can hear that the idle speed differs.
Both bikes were purchased in Sweden.
You dont need to drill anything just turn the screw to set the optimun mixture for low and idle speed. BUT, be wery carefull when turning it inwards so that you do not damage screwtip since it is tiny sharp and made of brass!

So..you are saying that
a) your carb(s) look the same as my pics
b) the slotted brass thing IS actually the mixture screw?

That´s good news. Now, I need to find the perfect screwdriver for that slot...and yes, I´ll be careful not to mess it up :-)

Time to get going with the Raptor petc0ck swap, and the BSM muffler swap, plus some likely rejetting :-)

Yep your good to go - mine came originally from France and had no plug fitted. Im not the first owner but it wasnt jetted right so i think it was completely stock. Maybe just US models have plug cause of Cali laws. Do the Dyna  :)

I bought mine in England ( not new ) and yes that slotted thing is the idle screw - the emissions laws in the US are pretty strict which is why they make it difficult to mess with. I swapped my original carb for one of Lancers carbs and put a cone filter on and after a bit of tuning with mixture screw, tickover and colour tuning have got it running sweet, very occasional backfire but I'm sure even that could be sorted if I wasn't so lazy and buggered around with the jets etc. I haven't got a clue what that extra "thingy" is :)

Well, then it seems to be established. There IS a difference. So maybe it´s time for a sticky to this theme in the tech/reference section - the disclaimer could be " PLEASE NOTE: the idle screw plug modifications described only apply to SOME country versions - check the pics below. Not all Savages have the plug. "

Thanks to all for your input/verification. This has been bothering me for some time.

It´s a mystery to me, Thomas, that your bike runs at all without it, and how it could have vibrated itself loose. Well, one of life´s mysteries, I guess :-)

Wording has been added to the "Idle Mix" thread in the Tech section - Serow
;)...

It runs, but not at all as it should  :P
I think I lost it because the spring and o-ring was missing ...
previous owner you know  ;)
