Title: Front Mount Remote Mount Oil Filter Mod
Post by gsxboy99 on 03/25/14 at 09:32:09

So we all know about how our motors like to burn oil and we love to ride our bikes all over, but they were designed geared more for city and town use. So unlike other highway going bikes we don't have a oil reserve can, a small oil filter and no oil cooler. We also know that our bikes don't need an oil cooler especially if your running synthetic oils which can take temps over 500 degrees. But we have a lack of oil in our system to be considered reliable and low oil pressure to boot at idle. So whats the fix for this issues we all encountered? Well this is how I dealed with these issues. I used the oil in and out ports in the front of the motor. found all the fitting to make it work, i had to mod the smaller fitting (oil port in) to keep flow correct, just a lil dremel work. This is just the mock up, i'm welding the mounting tab on today and i'll see how she works. I'll be running 3/8"hose to keep the flow maintained while going through the new M1-301EP filter to the oil galley. The M1-301EP is a high quality, high performance, and high capacity oil filter from Mobil1 . Also it has the toughest thickest can in it's class so it was the best chose for being up front. Lets hear some thoughts and comments.

"edit"- I also plugged off by tapping and using plug drrrrr, the old oil passage to the oil filter housing which now houses 2 super magnets. just popped the plug in the engine side and took much care in preventing aluminum shaving from getting in bad places making my motor very unhappy. the goal here is keeping the motor happy.

sorry i couldn't load pixs to this site for some reason.

I don't think the site is friendly w/facebook.

I wouldn't want hoses trailing off towards the ground.
better put right angle fitting there.

Do you think you could upload the other 3 pixs for me on here so other can see as well plz, thx. and your rite. I plan on changing those strait barbed fittings to 90 degree fittings so they point rite back at the in and out ports. Those straits were on there for mock up purposes. I also plan on tapping the oil galley plug on the top of the clutch cover for an engine mounted oil galley pressure gauge set up and tapping the remote oil filter mount in the center where theirs a spot for is so i can run and oil pressure gauge there as well. and next time i take the valve cover off again i'll tape the plug up there for cam bearing oil pressure and use a mini gauge for there. I think those 3 gauges in those 3 locations will be good for tuning purposes.

Thank you for uploading those for everyone to view. I just finished up welding the mounting tab up to the bike and cleaned up the welds and it's painted now. It looks great, and very clean. i took a few pixs but i will finish up later tonight. i have to go out w the wife shopping :/ I'll grab the 90 degree fittings while I'm out as well.

I still can't get these pixs to load through this site or a photobucket site. it just doesn't like me i guess go figure. Yoshi could you plz upload this pix as well for me and other plz again. thx for the help on these man.

So i got the mount burned on there and painted, it's dry today and I'll be assembling the filter set up just waiting for an oil gauge to install before i put the clutch cover back on.  and plz don't look at my dirty plug leakings, i had fixed it last summer but i didnt clean the surface good enough and i'm running synthetic M1 oil so oil found it's way out. just fixed that plug again taking better care in cleaning this time around, that's what you get when you rush working on your bike to go ride it.

Now that's a part. just have a few more things to do to the clutch cover then i can seal it back on there and mount it and fit the hose on.

Is an oil filter mounted in such a low location really a good idea?  I can see me on the side of the road with a rock embedded in the filter while the filter spits out a couple of quarts of oil.  Just my luck... :-[

like i said this filter has the thickest toughest shell on the market, aka the heaviest also but that's ok for the position it's in. People put over $1000 intercoolers on motor that took more to build then your bike, my bike and and every car i ever owned. People also put oil coolers up front just like how factory installs them. I like riding something that you never know whats gonna happen. makes for a more exciting ride, know what i mean. shoot i ride on a steal seat, just the way i am. And i'm not sure if you have ever have a bad oil leak problem on a bike, you know about it fast when your rear tire have barley any traction.http://https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152769178219922&set=pcb.10152769178244922&type=1&permPage=1

The issue maybe that you're using the same browser you use facebook with.
when you copy the address, paste into another browser.

so are you effectively running two oil filters now? One internal and one external?

How does this setup compare to the oil-cooler argument to do with effect on oil flow/pressure to head?

Title: Re: Front Mount Remote Mount Oil Filter Mod
Post by paulmarshall on 05/28/14 at 00:23:43

A very good question Savagebob. I too would like to know the answer to that question. I would like some additional oil cooling since I put the over size piston in.
There is a image somewhere on this site that shows the directional flow of the in and out oil ports, can anyone find this?

I'm assuming this setup has the same detriments as an oil cooler. ie. potentially impeding the poor flow to the head at idle. Unless the remote filter is significantly less restrictive than a cooler? Oldfella? Dave? verslager?
