Title: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by Dfinn on 12/03/13 at 07:26:54

Hi everyone, new savage owner here with a project I think you all might find cool.   I picked up a 1986 LS 650 for cheap and my buddy happens to have just opened a custom shop Forever Two Wheels, doing mostly HD work.   This kid is a pro welder with mad skillz.  We are going for a show quality, not your average chop job, really different looking bike that can still be ridden on a regular basis. Check out the progress so far.

Here it is a perfectly good (yet very crusty) working and riding 86 savage.

Where bouts you from Dif?  Ask yer bud if he buys bikes to fab...LOL I have a road glide i'm selling for 9k, garage kept 2007, has 53k on it. Just a thought mind you, if he's close enough.  Good luck on your build looks like its in good hands.

Hey Old Rider, we are up in the northern north east.  Maine!  That's a good price for a Road Glide, you should have no problem selling that.

This is what a couple hours of sanding can do for your side covers....

Got a little bit done today.  My seat from Sully's customs came in.  I thought about making my own, but hey for $50 I couldn't go wrong with this one.  Looks great and the quality is better than I could have done.
Here I am placing it on the frame trying to figure out where to mount it.

Since you have the backbone exposed could you please measure it?  Across and from the neck to the wishbone?

Thanks.

So check this awesomeness out!! My boy Nick from Forever Two Wheels had this great idea for an exhaust baffle.  You see, up here in Maine we have some pretty ridiculous inspection laws.  We are breaking everyone of them on this build, but excessively loud exhaust will get you a ticket in a heartbeat.  Hopefully this will help.

So here we have an exhaust tube measured and marked up:[/
size]http://i44.tinypic.com/2ic89s5.jpg

slots cut:
http://i39.tinypic.com/xlwizs.jpg

alternating sections pushed in to create pattern see here

http://i42.tinypic.com/212wqd2.jpg

b]And now we have one fully functional exhaust baffle.:

Post by Steve H on 12/11/13 at 19:16:35

It'll be interesting to see how that sounds.  It'll create some turbulence in the flow but I am not sure how much it will quiet down the exhaust. It looks good, though.

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by Dave on 12/12/13 at 03:17:15

That is an interesting way to make your own baffle.

If that baffle is going into the megaphone housing, I suggest that about half way down the baffle section you block it off completely in the center so that nothing can flow straight through.  That way the exhaust (and sound) must exit the baffle and go into the megaphone housing, then the exhaust (and sound) will have to go back into the baffle to exit the muffler.

It still is going to be pretty loud.........I betcha! :o

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build

I like how your thinking Dave! That's a great idea.

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 12/13/13 at 13:44:42

I am wondering if maybe those segments should have been pushed in varying amounts, to slow exhaust gases on the outside edge , too,,

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by ToesNose on 12/16/13 at 04:47:59

Very cool build so far Dfinn, thanks for sharing!

Along the lines of what Steve and Dave were hinting at, how about just turning two of the center alternating sections, that might do the trick   ;)

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by Dfinn on 12/16/13 at 15:10:05

Good advice y'all.  Hey Gerry, the backbone measures 13" long and 2 1/2" wide

Did some Polishing today and a couple other things.

Here is the side cover with the oil filter cover polished up real nice. Wow, what a difference!

Check out the megaphone!

figuring out seat placement:
http://i41.tinypic.com/s4awd1.jpg

Now here's an idea, cover up those gaps on the rear frame rails with bronze weld.  than polish it up and cover it up just before powdercoat. What will be left is a bronze weld looking so so cool.

That is my dream or fantasy bike frame, gas welded bronze intersections and mill finish steel tube, with maybe a satin clear coat over all.
I have a 1972 Triumph Bonneville that is my next project.  I would love to find a Rickman or Seeley frame (original or clone/copy) for a unit twin motor welded like that and put modern forks, alloy rims and brakes on it.
Kind of my own new Norton.
Project is looking good Dfinn,
Gerry

Post by Dfinn on 12/18/13 at 13:12:32

Correction on the backbone measurement.  I stated earlier that the backbone measured 2.5 wide.  That's wrong it measures 1.5 wide.  So it's 13"L by 1.5" W.  shadow rider, that's for you!

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by Dfinn on 12/23/13 at 15:04:57

Things are starting to shape up around here!  We got some exhaust work done today.  First off we had a new collar machined to fit the 2" exhaust.
It couldn't be better! Perfect fit.
http://i40.tinypic.com/i739sx.jpg

So than we tack welded the first bend and this is what that looks like.

http://i44.tinypic.com/14n2pfq.jpg

We mocked up the exhaust and this is basically how it look.
http://i44.tinypic.com/5k5bnq.jpg
http://i42.tinypic.com/s5kaol.jpg

Than Nick came up with a new idea for the seat.  Calling on café racer heritage this is what he was thinking.....I agree it looks great!!

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by Dave on 12/24/13 at 04:42:21

Your seat looks great.....but is probably more like a Street Tracker look than a Cafe' look.  Street Trackers have the back of the seat turning up like yours.....Cafe' racers have the dome on the back.....although none of this has to follow any hard fast rules.

Street Tracker

Cafe' Racer

http://i41.tinypic.com/2s0jp6h.jpg

I am interested to see the stainless welding......I am really poor at welding stainless with a Mig.  Tig is much better for stainless.  It is hard to use a welder just once or twice a year, and be any good at it.

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by Dfinn on 12/26/13 at 10:23:24

LOL! no rules indeed.  Call it whatever, I will just call it awesome.   I'll post some pics of my buddy Nick's welding when he does it up on this exhaust.  He"s good at it so it should look proper.  Keep an eye out!

Wow, everything is REALLY cool... except the Coors Light.
Reminds me of the Monty Python joke (modified): "Light beer is like making love in a row boat, it's F**king close to water."   ;D

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by Dfinn on 12/27/13 at 14:29:52

HAHAHA S-P!! I couldn't agree more....I enjoy good craft beer on a regular basis but it's just in there for perspective. Ya know, the masses all know what a Coors light bottle looks like and how big it is. (Actually it's all my buddy had in his fridge that day) The muffler is only as big as this bottle of swill.....But I agree. It's Fuc$#% close to water.  LOL!   ;DGood one.

Post by S-P on 12/27/13 at 14:36:03

At least you know he's not "toasted" while he's welding if he's drinking Coors Light.   ;D  The routing on the exhaust is really cool. I'm anxious to see how all that goes together with the battery etc.  Fun stuff! Makes me wish I had a metal shop instead of a carpenter's shop.

With the exhaust running so close to the carb, I think I'd be worried about vaporlocking after parking it when hot.  Or, at least losing gas to evaporation from the heat.

Dfinn, killer build and really nice work. Do you know anything about this build? A lot simpler, but very similar. Like, really really similar.

Here's the article on BikerMetric http://www.bikermetric.com/some-dude-in-los-angeles-has-a-suzuki-650-single-brat/. The author sounds like he's gone off his meds. He references an article with an earlier version of this bike, and also an interesting interview with the guys from RYCA.

You gotta let me know how you mount that tank. I've got a sportster tank I've been puzzling over for a while.

Thanks for the kind words fellas.  That tank is a sportster 2.1 gal peanut tank I got off eBay.  I've cut it down a little so it proportional. And as far as what we used on the forks, well it's just a buffer, sandpaper and some good old elbow grease.  Not nessasarily in that order.
I'll talk to Nick about making more header pipes for all y'all.

I would go with a 60's theme due to the style of the build, like flakes, scallops, chrome and all the nine yards... for the colors the more brilliant the better...
But naturally that's just me...

The metal and welding on the tank is so nice....it would be a shame to cover it with paint.

You could polish or brush the steel tank, maybe apply some gold leaf or some striping or color panels with a candy color....then just clear the whole tank.  The frame could be brushed steel with a clear coat, or a candy tint as well.....or a darker metal looking color without any flake.  There are some nice semi-flat colors that look like cast iron or steel.

If you decide to clear the bare metal I would look into clear powder coating. Im pretty sure clearing bare metal will make the clear turn yellow and or flake off.

Although i have heard of certain products that you prep the metal with to prevent all that but just do your homework so you dont end up with a headache.

Thanks for the input fellas.  I talked with an airbrush artist yesterday and we got some cool ideas floating around. Dave, I am taking your advice and keeping the welds bare and raw.  There will be some bare metal showing and graffiti type street art going on all with a clear coat of course.   Here is a quick scketch that I came up with, and trust me I aint no artist.  I named the bike El Gordo...go ahead.....google it.   Who knows what the final product will look like, but one thing is for sure. I love posting pics of this build and you guys will see it, that's a promise!

Got a sight gauge now! You see, this WAS a 2.1 gal shell, but it looked to big on this bike so I cut 1.25 inches off the bottom. Now it's, well...less than 2.1 gal.  This was a must.

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build

I used Harley Davidson high temp gloss black.  And what HD calls "Silver Bead Blast"

How many cans? Did you just pressure wash the engine and then spray it?

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by Dfinn on 05/21/14 at 09:01:06

I used maybe 1/2 a can I black and less than 1/2 of the silver bead blast.  I didn't pressure wash but instead used carb cleaner and sandpaper.  Lastly, some elbow grease.

Thanks for doing that!! So the story goes like this:
A few years ago Roland Sans made a bike called "El Barracho" it means the drunkard.  I thought, that's cool... Naming your bike something and doing it in Spanish.  I'm an Irish dude from Northern New England... Go figure.  So the original decal on th stock savage tank said "the Big Single". I looked up that literal translation and one of the choices was El Gordo.  The english equivalent to "The Fat One". Seems appropriate.... Big fat single cylinder!  The painter surprised me with the fat Mexican dude on there. I love it!  He also did some 80's skateboard logos on the sides for me since I have a skate deck fender and wheel for a brake light housing.
Thanks for asking! ;D

That knob for the decompression lever looks nice....now you need to make a longer lever to give you more leverage.  I don't believe you are going to be strong enough to push the exhaust valves open with that tiny lever that the solenoid cable pulled on.

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by Dfinn on 07/18/14 at 19:49:09

Dave, how far should the lever open up? I mean how much does it really move? I can move it now up about 1/8 inch.  Curious to know what I'll need to do....

Title: Re: 1986 Savage FTW bob chop build
Post by Dave on 07/19/14 at 05:02:35

The lever should move easily to the point that it contacts the rocker arm, and sometimes the valves are open and you can move it easily far enough to hold the valves open.  When the engine is in this position the exhaust stroke was in process......and the starter will be able to turn the engine over easily and get it running - even if you didn't use the compression release.

The big question is can you move the lever to lift the valves open if they are closed?  The problem in starting the engine is when the engine has decided to stop on the compression stroke, and when you hit the starter button the engine is instantly making compression before the starter has been able to get some momentum going on the crank flywheel, etc.  The starter may be able to turn a stock engine over on a warm day when the oil is thin - but the compression release is most likely required on very cold morning when the oil is thick and the battery is not as good as providing power.......we have to remember that Suzuki sells this bike to folks all over the world and the bike should start reliably when the temperature is way below freezing (not riding weather in my opinion).  So....back to the topic.....when the exhaust valves are closed, you need to be able to rotate the compression release lever enough to lift the exhaust valves off the seats and let a bit of the compression leak past the exhaust valves and allow the piston to come over top dead center just once.....after that the engine has enough momentum that the starter can continue to turn the engine over on the compression stroke.

If you ride in warm weather.....probably 99 out of 100 starts you can hit the starter button and the engine will turn over and start fine.  Every now and then the piston will be on the compression stroke when you hit the starter button....and that is when you need the compression release.  With the stock piston the starter may still be able to muscle the piston over - with the Wiseco and higher compression it can't, and on my bike when that happens the starter instantly stops turning the motor over.  I have a handlebar mounted lever and I pull in the lever, hit the starter, and release the lever and the engine fires right up.  I am not sure how easily you can reach down and manually use the lever mounted on the head...especially when you happen to stall the bike in traffic and need to hold the clutch lever in at the same time.....which most likely won't happen often.

Is this the deal?
So if you run manual decomp and just do summer riding you can:
- 9 times out of ten, just hit start and go.
- the 1 time out of 10 the engine is stuck on compression stroke and the starter/battery can't push it over -> you have to lean over and use the manual decomp.
Weighing up decomp options and have been looking at relocating stock decomp module but if the above is true I might just keep it neanderthal and use a manual lever.
Riding London traffic, a few stalls is inevitable however.
