Title: A few more changes done... getting closer
Post by WD on 09/30/13 at 10:32:25

Slowly but surely getting the bike back to commuter duties. And yes the drum front wheel is a permanent conversion, my stock front wheel should arrive at forum member Chiguy's house today or tomorrow...

Ditched the apehangers for some Road King bars. Recovered the stock pan and the old ensolite after the leather dry rotted, only got 12 or 13 years out of the leather. Pegs swapped out for Panhead era half moon floorboards.

Still need to order my new throttle assembly and cable, clutch and brake perch/lever kits, a clutch cable... Buy a small tombstone handlebar mount windshield since I hate the shield to parallel the fork tubes, they need to be upright in order to work properly. Overhaul the carb, Versy mod (have the parts, may wrap up tomorrow), finish the wire clean up.

Here's how Pokey sits as of this morning... Straight out of the 1940s.

I've just got to find a real rear fender! Looks so much more "finished" with the full fender WD! I like it!

Carburetor is overhauled, with the smallest pair of jets out of a Lancer kit. New fuel line and filter ($16 from NAPA, ouch). Cam chain widget is swapped for the improved type (piece of cake to change out). Only engine issue is an oil leak out the stator cover, not a big deal, pull, regunk it, put back on tomorrow after work.

Need to pull the rear tire off the Intruder, it is wearing a 130/90-15. Have a new 140/90-15 but prefer the Savage's handling with a 130. So the Intruder can go back to a stock sized 140/90 Dunlop.

Need to use my 10% discount at Dime City Cycles to get my clutch and brake perch/lever set and throttle/grip set (if they have the correct ones). Otherwise going for period correct parts from LowBrow Customs. Cheap but work fine.

Back end is wired, bags are on. Need to yank the sealed 14Ah battery out of the Intruder and stab it into the Savage (after i pull and paint the battery box, the chrome has to go). Couple more weeks and it should be ridable.

Have an older Missouri plate on it right now for mock up purposes... Looks a lot nicer than a TN plate, wonder how many decades I can use it before they catch on that it isn't licensed for real...   ::)

Dang WD! It's amazing how much your scoot resembles the picture in my mind for the last year! Add an oversize sprung solo seat,a springer front and maybe a root beer/orange paint job and it'd what I've been thinking up.

Darn good job!

Title: Re: A few more changes done... getting closer
Post by WD on 10/04/13 at 19:47:57

Thanks. The springer for it is down at the chopper shop, trying to decide If i want to run a stock style or the one they have with twisted (and unfortunately chromed) front legs. Picked up a Road King police solo and mounting bracket, but it is going on the Drifter, looked ridiculous (and then some) on the Savage.

It is a cute little toy bike, isn't it... I have 2 that are even smaller that get close to double the fuel economy of the 650. And the 250 is just as quick, and within 9 mph on the top end. If I swap to 305 jugs and pistons, it will smoke the Savage and still get in the 80s mpg. Just not sure a TT bike and I will get along anymore. I'm pretty stove up these days.

I still have a similar fender off my VN800A, and the Indian Chief style bag set I had on it. Already saving up for another 800A at that. I can't stand Fat Bob or dirt bike style fenders.

I was doing this one for my wife to use around town. Added the trunk at her request after putting one on the 950. Looks like we will both use it for a while when we heal from getting run over July 4th on the 950. Bike & trailer totaled.

The seat is from a 950. Very easy to modify to fit.
The bags are mounted on ghost brackets I made & come right off. Four bolts & the w/s comes off. The trunk is a bit harder but it wasn't factored into the original plan, which was stripping it down quickly if wanted. 8-)

I like your diamond plate fender extension, may have to replicate that in steel (stainless preferably). Wonder how much I'd have to narrow the spare XS650 rear section to extend the Savage front fender into something a bit more useful...

Engine is still dripping oil. Said screw it the last couple days, took a break from the bike. Was ready to send a few 20g slugs through the engine. My preferred lever and perch combo is no longer available from any of my regular sources. Neither is the throttle assembly that comes with grips. Last set lasted me about 7 years.

Putting this thing back together is getting pricey, could have bought a clean used VN800A for what I'll end up at in the Savage this go round. Oh well, it's just funny looking paper...  ;D

I can't see any good reason to not keep it on the bike. And several very good reasons to keep it on there. Have to keep the forum at large's baby sister's memory going.

I still have the bracelets and the other magnet as well, they will be worked into it somewhere.

Jeff, thought you might like this.  It was at the Okmulgee Chili Festival yesterday.  Yep, ya'll really missed it ... very cool with overcast and an occasional mist but a good fun day with plenty of free chili to sample.
A local Traditional Country Rock Band and, and, and ELVIS even dropped by !!!  Oh yea !!!  The KING himself.  He is still around and living a quiet life in Okmulgee.  He must be on Testosterone and Growth Hormone therapy though...looks really freaking good for his age.   :D

Looks decent enough for an Evo powered bike. Would have been better with a nose cone Shovelhead, but not bad as is.

Knucklehead-Panhead-Vincent style levers are installed. Have to get cables custom made, only one shop in a several county radius does them.

Switch plate is rough cut, mounted up, and switches installed. Stainless steel off a junk tailgate, needs to be rounded off and polished.

Ignition button harness is finished. Turn signal and headlight harnesses are 1/3 each done, tail/brake light is sorted out, ready to wire the rest of the way.

Emissions hose off the head cover is now rubber and ready to polish aluminum hard line.

Shifter assembly is pulled apart and ready to be replaced with modified Harley parts.

Grips are on, throttle sleeve from the old unit works perfectly with them.

Located the correct windshield last night, need to save up $103 (have 10% off code and free shipping anyway)...

Need to drop the forks out and repack the steering head bearings, plus drill and tap the headstock for zerk fittings. Going to pack the whole mess with grease... And drill/tap the shifter lever pivot eye, that hunk of junk is getting a grease fitting as well. Ditto the swingarm bushings.

Still need to order new fork boots. I hate the look of bare hydraulic front ends, boring...

Sounds like your getting a good amount done   :)

I'm having trouble finding enough free time between work and the boy, looks like it'll be spring like I originally planned to have mine back on the road after tearing apart.....oh well  LOL   ;D

Title: Re: A few more changes done... getting closer
Post by WD on 10/22/13 at 02:33:16

Currently have a 15 mile each way commute. If I get moved to the new store I was originally hired for, it is a 45 mile each way commute. My daily driver Ranger is only getting 19 miles per gallon, probably due to having 211500+ miles on it. Hate driving, so trying to get the bike usable again.

Title: Re: A few more changes done... getting closer
Post by WD on 11/03/13 at 15:59:16

Front section is now 1/2 wired. Just need to figure out the hot leads to the headlight switch and brake circuits, and add the sealed battery. Carb goes back on tomorrow, tried to shine it up a bit and failed miserably, still looks like crap, but it is clean crap...  ;D

Smearing some stuff on that sad Savage sitting in swamp slime, somehow seemed a simple solution, but somebody shoulda' said somethin' sooner...
...'cause cleaning a crap carb with cans of caustic chemicals can cause carb color to come close to clover...
...can't clear-coat the clover color to keep the carb clean 'cause the carb's coated in cleaner...
Quite a confounding conundrum... :-?...

Used to have alumunum cleaner in a spray bottle that you could buy. I had an aluminum trailer. Spray it on let it set 5 minutes and wash it off with a garden hose. Trailer looked brand new. Should work on a carb but I cant remember the name brand or even where I bought it.

Post by WD on 11/04/13 at 22:54:53

Mikunis are pot metal, so the spray on stuff from any truck stop will just eat the casting. Keihin are the same way.

I'd say ask me how I know... but... pretty self explanatory.

Title: Re: A few more changes done... getting closer
Post by WD on 11/11/13 at 10:30:21

It cranked! Booster cables directly to the starter, spark plug removed, compression seems alright.

Figured I'd try that to make sure the engine hadn't seized from sitting up so long.

So, need to run a couple leads for the lights/horn, hook up the brake/tail wires. Ready to modify the HD shifter linkage and swap it in place of the stock weak sister part. Need to drill/tap the factory shifter pivot for a grease zerk, drill/tap the swingarm and steering head as well. Overhaul forks (seals) and add heavier oil as I want ZERO brake dive. Get the front brake shoes relined, get the custom cables made, with a spare full set. Change the rear tire for the spare 140/90-15 Dunlop even though I really want a 130/90-15.

That should hold it for a couple years until I get around to the rigid frame conversion with sprung seat, 6" backbone stretch/round backbone conversion and 4.75 gallon Mustang gas tank swap, and chain drive conversion. Just doesn't look right with rear shocks, and if I could graft on a VN800 or XV750 rear section with hidden mono shock instead of a rigid conversion... even better on my tired old back.

Fish are biting, pecans are ready to drop, black walnuts are ready to pick up. Bitter oranges should be close as well, have somewhere between 15 and 25 thousand of those plants (birds/deer/squirrels/pigs seeded them).

Door is open, but the dogs and cats still have fleas...  :)

Snow predicted for tomorrow night...  :-? In the semi-subtropics...  :-?

I bet I have the only tire chains in the county for 14" pickup wheels.  ;D

It better NOT snow here this early. Moved here to get away from that nonsense.

The winds brought a LOT of the pecans down, ahead of schedule. Lots of wafers, lots of cork, lots of fuzz...  >:(

Didn't hurt the bikes any, a few extra leaves jammed into the frames and running gear, but no damage.

Had some time to play with the project today... Got a "little" bit done...

Yes, the bags clear the shocks, which still work as intended. Hard tail conversion to run good bags rendered moot...
http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/mphsgal/LISA-HP/Photos/Savage/bigbags_zps78b2dfad.jpg

Oh, yep, that blob on the front fender IS a light. Just sitting there while I decide if I like it or not...
http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/mphsgal/LISA-HP/Photos/Savage/fenderlight_zps5c9f421a.jpg

Close up, showing the bags spaced out with brackets kind of visible, relocated reg-rec kind of visible under the seat, and the headlight bracket turned front fender mount. The reflectors under the taillight are cheap Chinese Walmart stick ons, used them to mock it up, will be replaced with faceted glass versions...
http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/mphsgal/LISA-HP/Photos/Savage/rearcloseup_zpsb077fcb8.jpg

The grips suck. Period. Don't buy metal grips with rubber sections, don't use them if they were free like mine were, they suck. Oh, the bars are raised in 1970s AEE aluminum dog bones, height and reach are spot on perfect. With the thin seat, the floorboards, and those risers, it now feels like a motorcycle instead of a toy...
http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/mphsgal/LISA-HP/Photos/Savage/fullrear_zpse5d3fcf2.jpg

8 wires or so to go and it is off to have cables reworked.

Oh, that's the plate I'm going to run instead of a TN one, which will be in the saddlebag. No year sticker, see how long I can get away with it, since I "forgot" to take the "display" plate off at the "show"...  ;) ;D  ::)

The tank?  No idea, came out of the "to be shredded" pile at the last shop I worked for. Fits the stock frame swell like it was made for it.

Pokey ended up donating the exhaust system, floorboards, rear fender and bracket, plus the headlight and stanchions, to the 2003 bike. Got the orange/cream build fired off and ---POOF--- entire electrical system is fragged beyond repair. Alternator spiked, reg/rec melted (literally oozed its contents out), harness looks like burnt pasta.

Oh well, the parts look better in black anyway. Took the 2003 for a shakedown run and it will be back on the road less a working speedometer in about 48 hours, 100% finished.

If you plan to cut up a Savage, have a running spare bike handy to swap all the good parts onto...  ;D Wasted 5 years trying to bring the orange bike back to life.

Not "off the rack", you can fit just about anything if you don't mind finding or fabricating mounting brackets. Just make sure your donor fender came off a left side drive machine, not a Sportster, HD 45 flattie or Indian (real ones were right side drive).

Savages have 2 fatal flaws. I know you are a new member and new owner, so watch the cam chain tensioner, and try to keep the electrical system dry... The big black plug and relay at the rear of the tank can absorb water, and if it does, all kinds of ghosts start haunting the bike. Including one that is a pyromaniac.

Ahh well i will keep an eye on that. More or less im tired of my legs and back getting soaked when riding on wet pavement (I look at the pantslegs of full front fender harleys and get jealous) and considering everything would need modified which id have to outsource due to a lack of facilities. Im partial to the streamlined look. What would be close to the dimensions without needing substantial amounts of modification
