Did the 86-88 models have the back firing issue or did it just start happening on later models?

I have found memories of the 1st time I lit up the 8802 (02 engine, 88 carb, supertrapp) and then shut it off.
The resounding KERPOW brought people out of their peaceful homes.

My 87 backfires occasionally on gear change and I always get a nice poof when I shut it off. No resounding kerpow but a nice poof.

My 86 did bad until I adjusted the carb. It's not as bad now, but still there.
