Title: The Scrambler
Post by DaveSWE on 06/12/13 at 19:46:39

Hello!  I am new here. Live in Sweden, so excuse my bad English.

The bike is from 95 and i owned it for 3 years now.
I race Endurobikes and wanted something more of a road bike,
but found out that the LS is a little slow and small for semester runs.
So the best thing to do is to bring out the angel-grinder...

"Before"  A stock red Savage

Thanks ZAR!

Rear wheel is now 18" (Stock drum)
Swingarm is modified to fit the new cool tyres.
Tyres is TKC 80 http://www.mag-uk.org/img/photos/2013_02/contityres_web.jpg

Gastank is from an old Swedish bike from hte 50´s.

Front end is lowerd 2"

Rear shocks is abut 2" longer.

Frontlight is a 4" converted to a H4 lamp.
I was lucky to find the protective net for it.

The Carb is a Dellorto 40? whit ax-pump.
Works well and is a huge power-win.

Rear frame build.

YOur English is fine. Its even okay if you grind on angels.,the bike kicks butt,,
Now,
What does it weigh with all the trimming done?

Is the wheelie a power wheelie or did you pop the clutch?

Have you got a dyno available?

How does it handle with knobby tires? Are you really playing in the dirt?

( Sorry if those arent knobby tires, one pic sure looks like it,, )
OHH, Yea, more pics, please,, without a leg in the way,, I want to see the carb/air cleaner/battery box set up..)

Glad to have you here..

Awesome build. Love the build. Don't see too many with the "brat" style seat/hoop setup.
What are your tire sizes?

If you haven't used a water bottle as a gas tank at some point, you're doing it wrong. ;D

Are you going to make a custom engine sprocket cover?

Yes, the turning indicator is fixed by now...
I'm thinking about a really small chromed rear fender...

That looked good! Maybe with some 12 mm holes instead of the big hole.

If you stand upp, it powerwheelies.
No dyno yet.

Iam glad to be here!

Good looking scrambler right there, good job :)

Now, I don't know how much travel you've got on those shocks, but just in case you haven't been aware of it - make sure to check the chain tension - go to 3:25 in this ryca video:

And oh by the way, that dirt photo is EPIC!

Hmm, I've got the 98 being turned into a 50s rigid, the 03 that looks like a scaled down police FXR/FXD... guess I need to start hunting for another one to turn into a dirt bike, since the CL100 is also going rigid framed for the grandniece...

Dave,

It appears to me that your foot peg positions is similar to what we may call mid-controls.

Could you describe how how you made them and maybe a few more pics of that area of the bike?

I believe you did a good job on your Scrambler.

Thanks! The mid controls is something I did in a hurry just to get going.
It's the stock plates and leavers that is mowed and mounted on a new braket. The problem is clearens to the chain. And the looks of the stock stuff. I can take some pics. Hopefully there will be some time soon to build a braket simular to rycas.

Thanks all for the comments! I really do like the bike.
On the track I road in a KTM skinn suit if u look closely  ;)
It was a small track and I had no problems keeping most of the street bikes behind me 8-)
I resently put clip ons on the bike and it really behave well in the curves.
The tkc 80 tires is obviously not the best on the track, you have to be careful with the right hand out of the turns.

Title: Re: The Scrambler
Post by KennyG on 06/13/16 at 16:18:52

Dave,

If you could post some pics of how you did the mid-controls it would be helpful to quite a few of us that long to have a more traditional foot and seating position.

Thanks,

Kenny G

Just awesome!

As for racing, it's 99% rider until you get to the upper echelon. Obviously you can ride!

I would be interested in more details on your build.  I found this forum when I was searching for cool LS650s and S40s for inspiration for my project.   This is one of the coolest builds I've seen!

Title: Re: The Scrambler
Post by WD on 06/16/16 at 10:40:09

Great job and great pictures. Very nice to see you back here.

I'm doing a similar build with the remnants of my 1998 Savage. was going to be a chassis donor for a rigid build, but, I like the local dirt bike park and don't want to buy a real dirt bike. Have a donor bike lined up to replace my destroyed factory engine/electrical. Have the 7/8" bars with drum front brake control, bike converted to drum years ago. Building a BSA racer seat to go with the race tank it already has... Even have a period looking chrome/stainless fender for the rear, with a period taillight.

Can't wait to see pictures of your foot control set up. Local shop has offered to build my 18" rear wheel and custom cables. Your bike has inspired me to build an actual for fun bike, that just happens to be (barely) street legal.

Title: Re: The Scrambler

Here is some pics of the mid controls and the brake replacement. The original shoes didn't liked the trackday.

I want to replace the mid controls due to problems with chain clearens.
And I don't like the look of the oem stuff. I welded mounts in the frame that I will use in the new design.

Being 6'3" and an former factory pro motocrosser, (just kidding about the factory pro stuff! ) I'm very interested in your mid controls.  You mentioned that you may fashion a bracket based on the Ryca mount.  Are you going to used rearsets then?  Or will it still be more of a mid control?

Also What size tires are you using?

Thanks,

Tim
