Title: Custom Suzuki Savage - Retro Standard
Post by CommanderChaos on 05/25/13 at 17:11:21

I'm helping my dad out by posting a pic of his bike here. He's making good use of his retirement by putting together his first custom bike. It's a standard based on a suzuki savage, since at 70+ years of age he wants a big single that's easier to start than his 1954 BSA B33. Modifications include: 19"x3.5" spoked rims, Honda front drum, raised rear, footpegs moved to normal position, custom control linkage, aftermarket seat and springs, handmade side panels, custom exhaust, rejetted carb, handmade "H" tanks badges for Hanford, our last name.

Wow! That's really nice. It really does look like an old British single.
Kudos to your dad.

Very nicely done!  If you get a chance it would be nice to see a picture of the other side.  How does it handle compared to a stock Savage?  Looks like the steering would be quicker.

My compliments to your dad, he did an exceptional build.   It is a beautiful bike.   ;)

Nicely done, but, the front fender is on backwards...  ;)

I don't believe it is. If it were the forward half would cover way too much of the front wheel versus the back side of the wheel would be way short.  If he reversed it it would be out of proportion and not look right. :-?

That little lip on the front is not an indicator. Check out the Triumph Tiger T100 fender. Looks just like it.

I haven't ridden it yet but raising the back end gave it the same rake as the BSA. I'll see if I can get more pix.

I am interested in close ups of the chain guard.
Whats that attached to the swing arm? Looks like something to protect the chain hitting the swing arm.

He made the chain guard, I'll try to get more pix. The chain lays on the swing arm when there's no weight on the bike. I think the pad is an unresolved detail. I should give him a piece of Delrin for it.

CommanderChaos, please accept my congratulaitons... your customising the Savage is one of the most elegant renditions I have come across in a looong time !

I am extremely interested in how you moved the footpegs to the rear, in order to give the bike a "classic" stance, as I have been considering such a change myself.

I also like the sprung seat and would like to know if the seat is a "modified Savage original" of an aftermarket item...
...in which case, how you went about fabricating the front mount and fitting the rear springs.

The front fork appears to be original (but I am not sure) but I would like to know how you went about locking the front drum to the fork tubes... did you bolt it to the caliper mountings?

Rear wheel: you could have kept the original drum and relaced it to a 18"-19" wheel; instead I see you went for a completely new wheel: what size tire?

Last... was the "bottle silencer" sourced through Royal Enfield ?  8-)
And the air pump really fits in the overall picture !

Againm congratulations for an exquisite job !  8-)

Post by CommanderChaos on 05/27/13 at 05:18:47

Just to reiterate, this is my dad's bike, none of mine are this nice. Thanks to all of you for the positive feedback. He's finding it very gratifying.

The seat was aftermarket, and the silencer was a reproduction item for a BSA. I have him looking for pix of the footrests while he was making them. It was pretty involved.

Something that bears mentioning is that there was quite a bit of torch work putting this together. He sawed the swing arm apart and welded it back together to narrow it. Other lugs and such were welded or brazed on for the seat, fenders, etc. He's digging out more build pix.

I have a big monitor :-?

My monitor is a 27 wide screen and your pics are too big for me as well.

Good quality pics tho.

Title: Re: Custom Suzuki Savage - Retro Standard

I was kidding about the monitor. On my Mac if you hit "command -" the pix get smaller. Probably something similar on windows. You could also open the pic in a new window.

I'll try to get around to scaling them down tomorrow.

From the looks of the pictures......they are really big sprockets! ;D
Sorry......I could not resist!

That is a great conversion.....really looks nice and will get a lot of people stumped as to what kind and year of bike it is.  Thanks for posting.

Post by CommanderChaos on 05/28/13 at 10:28:06

I scaled the pix down so that they should fit on a large monitor (1500px wide).

When you ask about sprocket size are you referring to pitch/width or tooth count?

For those running Windows, press "CTRL  - or +" to reduce/magnify picture size on your screen;
press "CTRL 0 (zero)" to revert to tthe original setting.

CommanderChaos, I have a chain conversion and fitted by mistake  ::) ;) a slightly larger tire;
chain conversion is 17/49 (2.88:1 final drive ratio as opposed to 2.96:1 for the belt drive)
tire size is 140/90x15 as opposed to the original 140/80x15.

Final drive ratio is overall longer and speedo now underreads by about 5%;
I tested it yesterday on the freeway with my GPS mounted on the handlebars, indicated 100 Km/h was 105 according to GPS.

Thanks for the pictures  :)

PS What's the tire size on the rear, pl-eeeze ?

CommanderChaos again I really dig the bike and the concept that your Dad achieved  :D

A few Q's-
-You mentioned that he narrowed the swing arm, but did he have any clearance issues having a 19" rim on the rear?
-Any problems since raising the rear of the tank? Does he have a Raptor on there, I couldn't tell from any of the pics.
-I know he made his own mid/standard foot pegs, did he run into any particular problems in the process?

Thanks!!
And tell your Dad "Happy Father's Day!" for us   ;)

Title: Re: Custom Suzuki Savage - Retro Standard
Post by CommanderChaos on 06/16/13 at 04:38:50

The fenders were blank aftermarket pieces and he spent some time fooling with the back to keep the tire from rubbing it, nothing crazy, though.

If you look at the pix you'll see the footpeg brackets are made from steel plate which involved some fabrication. The worst of it was hooking up the brake linkage. I would have wussed out and used a cable, but he used a secondary lever, also in one of the photos. Preferable for looks, reliability and low maintenance.

Commannde, that is just how I dream of my bike looking. I think I noticed a british front end on there. I love everything about it. The alum rims, seat , standard pegs had to be a pregnant dog to make . And is that a larger diameter custom bent header pipe?
