Title: help plz! starter clutch
Post by GENERAL5LEE on 04/29/13 at 06:00:36

Help please at abit of a loose end with wat too do! The teeth on my starter clutch and flywheel have been chewed off, so I got 2 questions really 1. Wat has caused this and 2. Wat is the best way to fix this cos I've been lookin at new starter clutches and there habit pricey. Any help or advice wud b much appreciated.
I first noticed sum thin was wrong wen the starter motor made a totally different sound to usual, so took the crankcase off and was left with this, what has caused it is the more worrying question.

What year is your bike?

Sometimes when the bike is shut off the piston comes  up on the compression stroke while slowing down - then stops and suddenly goes backwards.  This engages the starter pawl and tries to spin the starter backwards  It can break gears and the case.

The early years did not have anything built into the clutch to help take the strain off the gears and case when this situation happens, and later years added an idler gear that had the ability to slip and relieve the pressure when this happens.  You need to update your bike with these later parts.

Here is a link to a thread about it.

Only thing ya can do is replace the gears.
requires that you pull the cover and pull the rotor off.
that requires a special puller.

The fix, and this goes for all you pre 5 speeds w/out the torque limiter gear... either upgrade to the later case and get the torque limiter gears or learn to snub the run down... shut her off and as she slowing down to a stop, help her along by letting out the clutch while in gear.

For those of you who have the 5 speeds with the TL... ever hear a spraung as you shut down?  Now you know why.  It's normal and your butte has just been saved.

If you decide you want to go the cheaper rout and buy some used parts I have the starter gears out of my 86 engine.  They are in good condition.  Just trying to sell some parts to recoup my investment.

I will post a pic

New2you '86?  Do you think the PO installed the upgrade?

You can check w/out pulling the cover.
remove the starter, stick you finger in the hole  and feel the gear shown to the left of the hole.  If it's 1 single gear, then it's not a TL gear.  If it feels like 3 gears stacked on top of each other (there's space in between each gear) then you have a TL gear upgrade.

Otherwise, Ima thinking you nearly got you teet in a wringer.

What would make you think that?

I guess I would be interested in knowing the actual frequencies of occurrence for this issue vs the number of savages out there with no issues...

11 threads for 'starter teeth broken'
18 for 'starter case broken'

I'm sure there duplicates, omissions and key words I've overlooked.

Anybody have a p/n  for the limiter assembly? I've been looking and nothing seems to pop up. Or maybe a decent ebay search that can get some results?

You want the gear and left side outer case half off a 90s or newer model. The microfiche above or at Ron Ayers are your second bestest buddy when you own a Savage or S40. Learn how to search them.

I got mine from a bike junk yard, case cover and gear for 30.00. You can also call bike shops, sometimes they have blown motors sitting in their back rooms that they use for parts. I found a shop a mile from my house that has a couple of Savage motors and they sold me some parts. WARNING: if you find one at a junk yard be sure you get ALL the parts (washers) and DON'T let them undo the clip and pull it off in parts. It WILL come off in one piece if you take the gear to the right of it off first and do some wiggling (the gear, not your butt).  ;)

since this has gotten out, there are few and far in between.

the VL1500 uses the same part.

Do the years matter for the vl1500?

Just curious if this one would be a viable option.

If so $25 bones aint bad. I may just have to buy it.

Just go to any oem webstore with a phish and check out the part number for that year.  If it has 24B in the part number it was made for the savage.
