Has anyone ever done a port and polish on a Savage cylinder head? And if so how much can I take out of the cylinder head exhaust port.
I got this photo from "The Savage combination photo CD", Anyone else done this mod?

I'd rather use extrude hone.

Is this something you will do yourself, or hire done?

That extrude honing looks slick - have you ever had it done?

I spent about 20 minutes looking at the web and I could not find any prices listed for doing a single cylinder engine.  Most of the websites I found catered to V-8 engines, and the prices for doing those were more than an entire used Savage engine costs!

I will do it myself.
I too can only find youtube clips showing how to port and polish V8s and other multi cylinder engines. The principle is the same.
The photo shows a ported exhaust port from The Companion photo CD. The red area I cant touch other than a polish. But the blue area I would like to remove that lip.Sorry for the shaky hands It is 630am and I am on my second coffee.Could I take out more than what's in the photo? It looks like a small lip still needs to come off.
Anyone done this?

I opened up the outlet some,... smoothed the passage as much as I could, and slightly rounded that "torque hump" that runs horizontal across the top... Don't take too much off that... I don't know what's under it...
... as far as intake goes... don't port or smooth anything... There is a head bolt that partly enters the intake manifold chamber,... you can smooth that flat if you like, but don't smooth the passage...

I know what is under that hump.....the base of the valve springs!  That flat humpy area is not very thick and it lies directly under the exhaust valve springs.

OK.....I will fess up......I have also done some work on my head.

I opened up the exhaust ring a bit, smoothed out the rough castings, and sharpened up the divider between the runners.

What grade sand bits did you use on your bremel?

I have not done it myself.  I have seen the result of the work on aircraft cylinders and it looks quite impressive.  I like the way it is so nicely smoothed up, but without a lot of metal hogged out of the passages.

It would probably cost around $250.

Exactly Sero. While I don't claim to know all the science behind it, I've worked with enough combustion equipment to understand the principal behind this. The more the fuel droplets are broken up(atomized)the better and more complete mixing with air and better burning of the fuel.. This equals better performance and better economy. Now if you can smooth out the path of the air/fuel flow and then recreate a roughened surface of the intake............ ;D . Then you've got some kick!
