Title: From concept to completion

Two and a half months ago I started with an idea...

…And now it’s a reality!
It's amazing the looks and comments that a bobber gets when rolling through traffic, pulling up in a gas station, etc.  People seem to either love it, or well, not so much...though nothing beats the look on the face of a kid, when you smile and wave at them, when you notice them drooling over it!

Here is how she turned out...comments are welcomed!

I'd post more pics if I could figure out how to link to photobucket.
If anyone could help me with that, I'm all ears.

it's easy,  if you click on the gear in your photo in photobucket it pops up a little window and there is some options there,  click on the one for forums and that is the code you need,  it automatically copies the link then you just have to past it here in your post.   It will be the one with the [img] as the first part of it in that popup window.

Bike looks really good mate.
Its easier to right click the link in the top left, then click copy. Move your mouse here and right click again and then click paste.

Sharp looking bobber Doody, I've always liked red rims with black spokes and the matching shocks are pretty cool  ;)

Nice job Doody! How did you do the rims? That must have been a lot of work, did you tape off each spoke? Are those stock bars with risers? Nice pics too! :)

Title: Re: From concept to completion
Post by Doody814 on 04/23/13 at 08:09:32

Thanks 87!

The rims were painted with a rattle can.  I cut drinking straws, & slipped them over the spokes...still a LOT of masking!!!

Bars are stock buck horns, painted flat black w/ 15mm impact sockets for risers.

The risers were also a "borrowed" idea, but I can't seem to find the thread for that one.

The rear fender is a trailer fender that I bought from Northern Tool for $13.  I originally had it mounted to the frame horns w/ 1" spacers (also an idea I found on the forum), but after installing a new tire & hitting a couple of "bumps" on the interstate I realized that it was rubbing a bit.  I fabricated some struts out of flat bar, lowered it closer to the tire, and mounted them to the swingarm.

This site has been a great source of inspiration!  Thanks everyone.

Thx BT!
Rectifier is bolted to front of battery box.
The fender is mounted in the back, with homemade struts that bolt to the rear of the swingarm, and the front is mounted to the crossbrace portion of the swingarm with angle brackets.

This picture shows both a little more clearly.

You can have your idea back, I've now got a new one!
I've started with the rear fender, so in case I didn't like it I could go back easily.  I ended up liking it, so I'm now working on the tank.  Next will be changing the rims to black (I guess I get to bust out the ole drinking straws again).
Here's the fender before mounting it.  I'll post pics of the tank when it's completed.

Ideas are free...borrow away!  That's why I posted pics.
Where do think I got my inspiration from?  If it weren't for this forum, I'd still be rockin a stock savage!  There's a ton of great people with great ideas on here.  Good luck on you project!

I do warn you, however, this stuff is addictive...my bike probably will never be "done"...just ask my wife!

Finished tank...all done with rattle cans.
These pics were taken only minutes after spraying the clear, so there's a little orange peel.  About 2-3 hours later the clear settled, and it's as slick as glass!  I'll post final pics after I put her all back together.

In the third pic, what looks like imperfections on the top of the tank, just below gas cap, are actually reflections of clouds!

Yep.  I got a bit ambitious a couple months ago & changed it though.  I now have twin 4" chrome lights.  It kinda looks a little "buggy", but definitley unique, so I like it.  I've been thinking about going back to stock, only painting the bezel orange flake.?.?.

Krylon.  Got em at Hobby Lobby...not very cheap though.  You're looking at almost $30!  They're very small cans, so I went through a few of them.  After it was all said and done, however, I only have about $90 or so in it all (and that was after sanding down & fixing some mistakes).  try getting ANYONE to do it for anything close to that!

Whats your inseam and how comfortable is your leg position? easy to shift? brake?

I'm 5'10" with a 30" inseam and am not sure if a 4" or a 6" forward control set would do.

I think it was this one...
http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/highway-hawk-universal-turnout-muffler-1pc-chrome-for-1-12-to-1-34-inch-header-pipes/part/HH-65-938

I painted it with high temp black, but it's faded into a dull gray.  They make some that are rated for extreme temps, so I'll give it another shot whenever I'm feeling froggy.

I'm 6'0" w/ a 32" inseam, and I think they're pretty comfortable, but it's a bobber.  I'm not going on long trips, I'm just cruisin through town.  I guess it depends on what you're doing.  If you do more riding on the twisties and/or do a lot of shifting and braking, I'd think 4" would fit you just right, but if you're planning on doing more open road cruising, where you would want to stretch your legs, the 6" would allow for that a bit more.  If it was me, however, I'd go with the shorter set to allow for more control, and if you wanted to stretch out, use some highway pegs (on a crash bar) or some pegs that swing out.

I'm only 5'8" with a 30" inseam and it took some getting used to with my 4" Ed.L forwards installed. My legs are stretched pretty well and are really comfortable, but I don't do much hard mountain/twisty riding roads. Most of my riding is short around town commutes and slow leisurely drives  ;D

Thanks Man!
I call it a 6-footer...she looks great from 6ft away, but up close you can tell I built it myself.  I bought it on the cheap, dumped less $ into it than Hurley guts spend on chrome bits, had a blast building it, and have even more fun riding it (and seeing people's reaction while on the road, lol)...That's what it's all about!

Good luck to you on your build.  Start a thread, we all want to see what you come up with!

How did you mount the turn signals?

Title: Re: From concept to completion
Post by Doody814 on 04/28/14 at 20:09:22

I bent the seat brackets downward, to horizontal & used it as a "shelf" for the seat springs to rest on. Between the spring & bracket, I placed an angle bracket that the lights mount to.

The angles are key...I started using cheap little shelf brackets I got from Lowe's, but the vibrations caused stress fractures & now my right shock needs a new paint job, lol. I had some 1/8" flatbar lying around, so I bent & drilled a couple of brackets & now they're solid as a rock!

people have done that before... won't last.

Title: Re: From concept to completion
Post by Doody814 on 04/29/14 at 06:51:08

Well, by all means...if people have done it before, then NO one should EVER try it again!

There's a reason why Manufacturer's warantys are voided, on almost everything you buy, if something is modified...because it's likely to not last as intended.  I'm not a fabricator, I'm a backyard mechanic!  I make things happen with what I have available.  If it doesn't last, I'll fix it (probably in a manner that you don't aprove of either), cause that's what I do.

I was asked how "I" did it, so I answered honestly.  I never said that this was the best way it could ever be done.

If you don't like the way someone has done something, OK, offer suggestions to a better solution, otherwise don't be so rude.  If you're gonna hate, just keep it to yourself!

Title: Re: From concept to completion
Post by old_rider on 04/29/14 at 08:55:54

Could have also been the weight of the rider that caused the bent seat mounts to fail..

If its working....why bother changing it.... if it breaks, worse thing that will happen is the seat will bottom out and then it will have to be fixed, until then... ride away!!
