Title: Neutral Light
Post by Beagle on 04/19/13 at 07:19:42

So, my neutral light isn't working anymore and I checked the bulb to make sure it wasn't blown or anything and it's OK but no green light.  The motorcycle runs fine though without it being on and it's not a life or death thing but I was wondering if anyone knew what might be causing it not to light up?  What can I say?  I like pretty lights!   ;D

Have you done any mods recently?   :-?

How did you check the bulb?  Just because the philament isn't broken doesn't mean the bulb is good.

No mods done.  I had 2-new bulbs that I tested and they worked but just not in the bike.

Here's how the neutral light is wired...

It's getting juice from the side stand relay and is grounded thru the neutral switch.

OK, didn't see any breaks in the wires.   This is a minor thing but now I am determined to figure it out.

Is there a fuse that might be connected to the neutral light?

Nope. Only 2 fuses for the entire bike.

Follow the neutral switch wire from the engine casing to where it connects to the rest of the wiring loom. Look for breaks.

The first thing I would do is disconnect the blue wire at the connector under the fuel tank, on the right side.  This wire should show that it is grounded when in neutral...and open when in the other gears.

Thanks!  I'll see if that works.  Such a pain taking off and on the tank though.  Almost at the point of not worrying about it.

That's actually not a bad idea. My bike lost the neutral light the same day the side stand safety switch died... at roughly 2 months ownership. I've had the bike a bit over 15 years, never missed having a functional light.

Don't miss the turn signal or high beam indicators either. No speedometer since 2005...  ::)

No inspections necessary here...  8-)
