Title: Rear pulley play/wobble - normal?
Post by dkruitz on 04/07/13 at 10:32:52

I was going over my still new to me 2004, and was cleaning the black portion of the rear pulley and noticed some play in it.  It moves a bit along with the inside drum guard (sorry about the terminology.)  It's not a lot of movement - about 1/16th of an inch or less - but should I expect to see any back there, or am I being a nervous newbie?

some play is normal,  the rear pulley is isolated to the hub with rubber bushing to reduce the shock into the rear wheel, so some is to be expected.

I can't answer absolutely precisely-how much is it OK... but on my Savage, when I found a similar backlash, changed the bearing in the drum rear pulley to a new one. since then I have traveled more than 10,000 miles away. and it is not repeated.

OK. I'll make a note of the distance then check it in a couple thousand miles - just passed 2,500 on it today.
