Title: Dyna muffler swap
Post by MrNick on 03/26/13 at 16:11:40

I noticed that several owners have changed to a Dyna muffler.  Does this give any advantage over the stock other than a change in sound.

It's about 10lbs lighter... and gives a slight performance boost...
... but it's mostly about cosmetics and sound...

+1

As Sero points out, the Dyna muffler is lighter...and 10 lbs on a 380 lb/25hp bike is significant. The performance boost is slight, until you add the other modifications. But the sound is much sweeter....it really lets the "thumper" come through!

And just getting rid of that fat, ugly stock exhaust is worth the time and $$ !

I really need to find me one of the Dyna muffs around here,  nobody seems to have one at any of the shops I've called.  The long emgo I bought from Ryca last year is already starting to burn out and getting louder by the day it seems like, not to mention the chrome plating on it was extremely cheap and is flaking in spots.

The Harley mufflers are very sturdy,.. and have excellent quality chrome...
...(I get stains off with #000 steel wool,... and it never scuffs the chrome... Try that on other aftermarket mufflers and you'll be sorry)....
:-?...

There's a pair on ebay starting at $0.99 and 4 days left with no offers yet. The buyout is $29.99 and shipping is $25. See if you can find another forum member in your area who wants to split them, or get the pair ans resell the second one, you might even make a few bucks if you get it cheap enough LOL.

If you can't find a dealer in your area and want to try and find one without using eBay....post a free add on Craigslist and let people konw you are looking for one or two.  There are hundreds of stock mufflers that are laying on shelves out there....just about every Harley owner takes the stock muffler off.

The ones in that particular eBay posting have the baffles removed - would that make them as loud as the RYCA Emgo?

Title: Re: Dyna muffler swap
Post by Serowbot on 03/27/13 at 10:17:40

Yes,.. loud as a straight pipe, and not good sound or torque...
Don't buy a muffler without a baffle...

Keep your eyes out,.. and you should be able to find one for $30 or so, shipped... maybe even a pair... (I like to have a spare)...

Also beware of buying some West Coast mufflers as they could have catalytic converters in them if they came from CA.  Serow says they run fine - but I accidently bought a set with them inside and didn't want to run them.  We also had one fellow post a picure of bluing a the front of the muffler and we could not figure out why.....then Serowbot came up with the reason....they were Catallytic Converter mufflers and they woud get hot in that spot where the catalyst was.

Yup,.. the cat ones seem to run fine,.. but, they will blue at the heating element,...
...and would likely give a wicked leg burn if you pull a stupid... :-?...

I put a cat on mine and it sounds great with
no noticable overheating.
BTW... I don't think that the catalytic mufflers
are limited to just Calif. Harleys. Mine came
from Tennessee.

Thanks for catching that T2, obviously I didn't!

We got one for Aida's bike here in Texas and it has a cat.  It is kinda nice actually...  Less smell (which she really likes) and a cool glow when I follow her at night.  No bluing...

Texas is just plain weird...
...pipes just don't seem to blue down there... :-?...

Could be because it it hotter outside the pipe than in... :)

Oh yes they do, haven't you see the pics of my bike when it had the Jardine on it when I first bought it last year.  It had some nice blueing on it. After changing out the Jardine to the long reverse cone emgo and lots of riding in 100+°F temps my header started getting some nice blue and gold hints as well up near the jug. Before you ask yes my bike has be re-jetted properly.

Oh and to the OP if you do get a deal on a set of the right Dyna muffs,  I might just split the price with ya if they are in good condition.  I'm still looking for one myself but most of the ones I've seen on evil bay that have the baffle still intact and in good visual shape as well, I think they are asking way to much.

Like I said before, I went to a Harley Dealership and said I needed a stock muffler for Aida's bike.  Told them what it was and how it worked.  They pointed me at a large rack of them, and it was $20.  And I got to pick whatever I wanted.

that would be nice, except the nearest HD dealer is over an hour away from me.  I live out in the sticks.

I have bought 2 Harley mufflers from a local customizing shop in Killeen, Tx for $5 bucks each. They have shelves of them.

you could probably make a few bucks selling them here on the forums if they are selling that cheap

I know I'd buy one from ya since I don't have any locally available.

Does anyone have a tip for removing the heat shield bolt?  The part of the shield the bolt goes through is too tight to fit a wrench or socket over the bolt head.

I just took mine off two days ago and had no issue getting a socket on there, do different years have different heat shield setups?

I had to trim and cut some parts to get it off.  I removed the right foot peg bolts to get the whole exhaust pipe off.  Can someone tell me the proper torque for the foot peg bolts for when I go to put them back on?  I'm headed to the hardware store to find some bolts that will fit the HD muffler.  The ones I took off the Suzuki have too tall heads.  I'll probably get some panhead bolts.  I'll probably pay the extra for stainless, too.  It was a pain to get some of those screws and nuts off.

I'm also wondering how some of you re-used your stock heat shield for the slip on piece?  The point where my HD muffler would be fully seated on the header pipe is right where the opening is for the bolts to fit into the track.  The muffler is also forward so much that the second bolt can't be used.  I think I will have a muffler shop custom a piece for me on Monday.  There's a shop across the street from where I work and they're usually reasonable and do good work.  I just need to decide if I want the 3 1/2" or 7" piece like I've seen others have made.  I will probably bring the whole pipe with me so they can fit them.  If I just have is slipped on do I still need clamps?  I don't want it all welded into one piece and I'd like to be able to adjust it nice with not additional stress on the header.
