Title: knocking starter clutch?
Post by wambr on 11/05/12 at 20:48:32

hi guys! I want to ask you a little help. since at us in Russia the season has already ended, and ahead of a long time for the inspections of thoughts and repair...
so actually question. when I went on a motorcycle in the summer I have had this situation . when I stopped the engine there was a distinct thud under  left side engine cover .
the other day I took it off and looked at the state of the starter clutch . as usually, this node is the cause of such knocking . tried turning all the gear-no paper jam or damage I saw . in what may be the reason, please tell me?

tnx, Versy!
I don't know yet what can be. I tried jiggling the rotor magneto by hands, but tangible backlash think not. and so often the case? Ah Yes ,the add-mileage on my savage 51000 km.

Older,  US models that have 4 gears, not 5... can make a kickback of engine rotation at shutdown...
Could this be your noise?...

my savage 400 '95 has 5 speed gearbox . I don't know, maybe because of the gearbox has such a knock . I noticed that the sound becomes stronger, after riding .

Yes, thank you serowbot! I know that the savage 400 is not sold in the United States and many other countries . constructively the savage 400 and savage 650 almost identical . and the starter clutch on my savage looks like this

visually it is as if everything looks fine. maybe you know how to verify the starter clutch or support bearings of the crankshaft?
so as not to disassemble the engine is completely...

I get the kickback all the time when I shut it down. Doesn't bother me. Remember this is a big one lunger.

You should worry if you have a 4spd.
Kickback w/out the torque limiter will break the gears or their mounts.

Hi are the starter idle gears the same size on the new and old?The new one looks wider in photos.
Cheers Pat.

They aren't wider, they are broader... therefore you need a generator cover from the newer ones.

Refer to the referenced thread for details.

but the newer gear requires the newer cover, and vice versa.

no one else has any ideas?and then there is no desire to completely disassemble the engine, to find out later that the reason was "from above".

Follow the clunk and you'll find the reason for it.
