Title: Expensive blank for forklock key.
Post by Gyrobob on 11/02/12 at 12:33:34

I went to a locksmith to have keys made.  The ignition key was no problem,.. a few bucks.

Before he cut the fork lock key, he warned me the blanks for that key come from Germany in small lots so they are expensive.  He was going to charge $12 for that key because he says the blanks cost him $10.

Do any of you know anything about this?

Where can we get blanks for the fork lock at a reasonable price?

I see em on ebay ... but it is a funky weird key I should say.
Cool.

It's a Neiman lock, they're on BMW's. It's $40 for the lock so $10 a blank doesn't seem that far off.

IF you are handy with your dremel and small file set, you can take a cheap Access 93 blank, flatten & widen the bottom of the tilted groove to be flat and get the blank cut on a key machine to match your fork key for both stop and overall length (the blank is too long too).

A bit fiddly and requires some patience, but a couple of tries gets you a fork lock key.

My opinion?   $10 is a deal compared to labor converting an Access 93 blank, take it and count yourself lucky.

Gotta admit, I sure like my Ninja on which the ignition switch and the fork lock are in one and the same place, and use the same key. There are a lot of ways in which the 250 Ninja is superior to the S40. Still, the S40 is a fun ride.

It's a sport bike. I don't know any sport bikes that DON'T have the feature of the key on the tree that also locks the forks. Comparing a sport bike to a cruiser doesn't make any sense - they were created for 2 completely different purposes. For starters - people either like to see the mechanical bits of their bike and buy cruisers or people like the shape of aerodynamic shrouding(fairings) and buy sport bikes. And I haven't even gotten started on the ergonomic differences of the two...

I am well aware of the differences, since I have both. I cannot see any reason why cruisers cannot have the "key on the tree" as well, since it is considerably more convenient. I suppose styling is more important than function. At least on my other cruiser, a Yamaha, the fork lock uses the same key as the ignition.

My daily driver, an FJR-1300, uses only one key for five different locks.

It annoys me to need two keys for three locks.

I searched for Neiman key blank.  They have them for $9 with free shipping, so I guess the locksmith was not the one who is gouging me.

One entry on ebay says this blank is interchangeable with HD-666, BOERKEY 666K, SR61N, B69K, Silca NE5, and Ilco N2M.

Update: I found some for $3.50.   I bought four.  free shipping.

Roman's locksmith in Sheffield, Al made my extra keys. The ignition keys were about $2. She was having trouble finding the forklock on the computer and kept mumbling about the key looking familiar. She picked up a dog eared manual and flipped through it until she found a replacement...said it was the same as a BMW...cost $4 cut and out the door.

Also nearby Honda dealer wanted $30 JUST FOR A BLANK for my daughter's ATV. Romans cut one for $5-6. The difference in price was waiting about 2 weeks until I was in the area. It's about 25 miles away.   ;)

It would be nice if you actually shared where you got them from. After-all, that is what forums are for.

in a few years... when you've lost your key... you may need the description.

Silca Key Blank for MC Fork Lock/Moped NE5 SR61N B69K

cause I doubt it'll have the same ebay number.

I got an extra set of keys made this summer and the cost seemed normal, both blanks were about the same.  I don't remember the price because it was low and the locksmith made no comments about a special blank.

That Neiman blank in most places on the internet and on ebay is double or triple the cost of the blank for the ignition,.. so, generally, it is an expensive blank.  I don't doubt the local locksmith was truthful when he said he had to pay a lot more for those blanks.  I don't know why the place I found on ebay was so cheap.  I hope he doesn't see this discussion.

I had been looking for a lock smith to make a new fork lock key that did not have the offset side to it since I got my bike and was told that they did not carry the blank by all of them.  I finally found one shop that had the blank and was told it was for a BMW and it cost $9.80 for the blank and $1.00 to cut it.
Guess I should have checked the internet first, but with my luck she would have charged me $10.00 to cut it.  :o

All things Savage seem a little bit harder to come by on this side of the pond - I've only got one steering lock key and want another before I do the inevitable and end up with a locked bike and no key.
I found this in the UK today:
http://motokeys.ecrater.co.uk/p/11486683/key-blank-neiman-motorcycle-fork
Anyone know if this is the right one?
sorry for many questions lately people - it's all new and I got stuff to sort out  ;)

That is the correct key.  The numbers for various brands of this key blank are HD-666, BOERKEY 666K, SR61N, B69K, Silca NE5, and Ilco N2M.

I think this key has been referenced, but my local lock and key guy quickly matched the stock key to an ilco blank SR61N. Works perfect, and he claims that this blank is generally used for forklift keys so if you hear that mentioned don't be scared.  I think I paid $3 for the key, cut and all.

I agree about SR61N,... as do the replies #8, #13, and #19 above. Your cost is even lower than mine.  I'll have to take one of the four blanks I got to Walmart or Home Depot or some such to have a blank cut.

(hmmmm, I wonder how precise I can be with a Dremel and a small file???)
