You guys know your stuff so... anyone think this bike would be worth an hr drive? Maybe even just for parts?

It really depends on what you want to do with it, and how well you turn a wrench. If you plan on rebuilding you want the bottom end inspected as well because dropping a valve can do more than just damage the top end. If you do rebuild, you might be able to salvage the cylinder and bore it out. You'll still need a new piston and probably head/valves.

If you want to part it out, it might be a good deal if you are patient. Parting out tends to take time.

kbb put a '02 at $1140 in running condition.

you'll need a head, hard to find, will cost you about $400 if you're lucky.

much easier to find a running engine, $600 to 800. think pinwall

parts easiest to sell, side covers ~$50 each, starter ~$80, starter torque limiter ~$30, clutch ~$50, bottom end ~$300, cam ~$30, but you may have these for a long time.

given my druthers, I go with a replacement engine. that would put you at ~break even if you don't consider labor. and you'll make something for that if you can sell the extra parts.

close call, either way.

If you have the space and patience to deal with it how ever you dream, take the drive with $450 in hand and a case of beer :D
In my experiences the beverages show sincerity in making a low offer opposed to just knocking the price down for the sake of it HAHAHAHA

I agree,, wouldnt wanna part with 600 over it, Im more like 4 & no beer,, or 3 & beer,, its a pile O junk right now, but then, IM absolutely as busy as I can get , so , to me, a project is a bad thing,, & Im sure that affects my thinking,

It all depends on what you want to do.....and end up with.

If you are looking for a stock bike to ride....you are better off buying one that runs well.

If you are looking for a donor bike for a project....then maybe. If you are going to tear a bike down, bore the cylinder and put in a Wiseco for more compression, stick in a a wilder cam, do some head work, etc......then you may end up being OK and it may not make sense to buy an expensive bike in good condition just to tear it apart. With htis bike you will need head and a cam core however.....so you still may end up paying more than you would if you bought a bike with cosmetic issues but runs well. Gasket sets are about $ 100, a cylinder head when you can find one is about $ 300, and generally will need some work when bought used. Then you add $ 140 for a Wiseco piston, $ 60 or so to get the cyliinder bored, shipping and taxes......You will probably end up putting $ 600 in the engine just to get it running again.

I'd call and offer 400. Wait a month, call back and offer 450.

If you just want to part it out... it would be easy money... takes time.. a littel work...gas tanks in primo cond are bank.

As a fixer upper.. its still not bad. If your doing the work.

Buy and pay someone else to fix.. not a good deal.

I see engines pop up for these things for around $200. If you don't have the patience to spend on rebuilding but have the patience to wait for an engine to pop up, you can have a running bike for around $800. Then you can rip the old engine apart for fun.

10 Y/O with a dropped valve? Id see about roundin up a motor,, If you can land a motor that will run & stuff straight in, & have them both, at home, for $900.00? Maybe. Comes down to Just how badly do you need to NOT spend $$... & are you any kinda mechanic? If you have a mechanical project, will you win it? It would seriously suck to have 900 in a pile of junk,, when for another 3 or 4, you coulda just been riding,

Have to say I'd go in with the attitude I was buying a parts bike.....$300 max! If it's in shape to get running that's fine but never bet on it.

Oh....be sure to get a CLEAR and FREE title!!! Otherwise it's $250. A titled frame is also a good seller for the customizer guys.
