$16.00 bucks with free shipping seems to be the low price right now.

Oldfeller,
I have made a note to get a Raptor petcock but have not followed thru yet as I'm still O.K. with the OEM.
There are two models - a long body & a short body.  I had noted that I need the long body (Raptor 660).  If I'm not mistaken, the one you referenced is the short body (Raptor 400).   Does it really make a difference?

Title: Re: Where to get a raptor petcock
Post by Oldfeller on 09/20/12 at 03:46:59

You got it backwards, we need a longer body model.   There are several, but only the short ones don't provide enough finger room to clear the flange on the gas tank.

The one I posted is a long body model.   The petcock is an after market part and this one is being sold for a Raptor 440, but if you could find a listing for the 660 it would be the same petcock that is being sold for both.

Of course they will sell the same petcock for a 240, and an 80 too, they don't care .....

Here is a short body petcock so you can see the difference.

.... now, which one is this one?    yup, a petcock pop test ....

I don't know what the 400 is, but I purchased and installed the Yamaha Raptor 660 as refered to from this link-

Ebay didn't sell the petcocks cheap back then like they do now.

Heck, back then the Yamaha stock petcock sold for $17, now it is getting on to doubling that price.

Thanks for clearing me up on that Oldfeller.
I think I'll go ahead & get one to have on hand when the tank is off.

I got my official Yamaha Raptor Petcock from Ron Ayers.
http://www.ronayers.com/ProductDetails/N/687/SKU/808680

I just don't trust the aftermarket Chinese stuff.

Title: Re: Where to get a raptor petcock
Post by Oldfeller on 09/20/12 at 05:46:08

Ron's price is still pretty good at $18.46, but shipping will add another $7 to that.

Chinese make the stock parts too, they build the Savage engine at LiFan Industries in China as they do the Honda Rebel engine.

Motorcycle engine parts are globalized pretty much now days.

The stock Yamaha parts are manufactured in China anyways Dave, and the bikes are put together in Indonesia these days not even Japan  =/

The aftermarket Raptor petcock might even be made in the same plant by the same company that makes them for Yamaha  :o

Aaaaack!!!!!
What is this world coming to when even a Japenese bike is not made in Japan.....that is just downright un-American?

I was also shocked when I read that some of the KTM engines are made in India.

If it's the one OF linked to,  no it's the Chinese knock off of the Yamaha Raptor petcock, so it's the manual one that you need.

Thanks,it was the one OF linked to.

OF   Hey, do us a favor and if you would, please report on installation and use of that Chinese clone of the Raptor when it gets to you and you put it on the bike.

It is easy to spot them on Ebay, but until one is actually installed on a Savage the question of "complete suitability" still remains.

Oh ,I thought these were supposed to be decent. I bought it in case mine gives me a problem ,but so far it hasn't . I probably wouldn't have bought it if I knew they were untested . Oh well.

By specs it should be fine -- but we trust after we confirm.

At least hold it up to the stock unit and verify the 2 bolt up pattern distance is correct, because that is the only way it could be screwed up.

You mean measure with a ruler between the boltholes?

Google this: 5LP-24500-01-00    Or get your cycle shop or Yamaha shop to order one. This is the number for the Raptor 660 YFM660R.  :)

No, hold the new part up next to the old part, the bolt hole distance will be readily apparent to be "same-same" or different.

Not that we have ever heard of one of these petcocks being bolt hole different, mind you -- but if you are getting one shipped in it would be nice to get a verification check.

I tend to trust Chinese suppliers after verification, something Ronnie Regan used to say about the Russians while they were doing disarmament of their nukes and chemical weapons.

For OEM parts I tend to like Powersports Plus. Just a recommendation. Listen to these guys for which specific part to get... I'm not sure exactly as of which one... I just know the one they told me to bolt on works.  8-)

And for Ebay purchases, we keep verifying for each new vendor and any time the picture changes (example - these have copper pipes like the real thing, which makes me trust a little more than for the all plastic versions).

Yup, 'ol Ronnie knew how to handle them Russians -- he never got anywhere with them Chinkie Chinesers to speak of, Bush got whatever we got out of them.

OF , I got the chinese petckock today . It looks like the same bolt distance ,I measured it, and they seem to be around 1 3/8" apart to the center of the bolt hole, plus the base has the same shape. The difference is there is only 1 port on the new one and the old one has 2 (I don't mean in the tank ,on the outside). Also ,there is no prime position, only reserve ,on and off . It seems like the mechanism is sturdy and turns smoothly, Hey, I'll give it a shot. But I'm not installing it unless I need to . Thanks.

Cheap $16 Chinese rip off clone petcock is VERIFIED then as "an honorable ancestor" trustworthy vac petcock replacement.

::)

.... for at least $16 worth of "honorable ancestor" trustworthiness anyway ....

I also now have one of the $16 Chinese ones in my tool box.  It has (2) 1/4" dia. mounting holes on 1-5/16" centers.  The white plastic filter screens are a rather loose fit though.  I think a dab of epoxy on them would be a good idea to keep them from slipping off.  Or check the existing screens for a better fit.

Remember, the whole idea of using these is to get away from the complications of vacuum operation.  Back to the old ways.  (Therefore, no vacuum port - manually turn the gas on & off along with the ignition switch)

I rechecked the size of the chinese petcock with a micrometer ,and it seemed to be 3.5 centimeters distance  to the centers of the boltholes. The outer edges of the  base on the stock suzuki petcock was a mm or two larger,I'm not sue if that matters, but the bolthole distance seems to be the same. They mailed it in an envelope and the brass tube doesn't look absolutely perpendicular to the base ,I don't know if it got a little bent in shipping.Does it matter if there is no prime on there?

no need for raptor petcock, all you need is some golf tees... plug the line on the carb and vacuum line on the petcock and run it on prime, i did this and have had no problems

but running it on prime leaves you without any "reserve" in your gas tank, so when you sputter out, you are out and can't just switch to reserve  :( I always end up switching to reserve, so that would not work for me

OF   Can't have any of that racial slurring stuff, so I will replace chink-a-clone with "honorable ancestor" to satisfy your enlightened sense of ethnic propriety.

Quote:
an honorable ancestor

OF,
You might want to consider that most folks of Chinese descent (at least the few I know) would consider the term "honorable ancestor" to be nothing more than a racial slur. I don't believe your intent was to be insulting so I might suggest that you find another way to describe a knock off part manufactured in China.

For what it is worth
