Title: Engine pitch/db level change + engine shuts off
Post by Coaxial on 09/19/12 at 08:03:15

Hey Everyone,

I have myself a Suzuki Boulevard s40 2007 Model.
It has 32700km (~20318mi) and It looks to be in good condition.

-Last oil change was in April.
-Ran half a bottle of Seafoam(not all at once) in it a few tanks back.
-I keep the motorcycle very clean.

My technical skill : still learning, just figured out how to swap front brakes recently.

Everything is stock.

The Issue:
From an underground parking, choke warmup for half a minute before going. Riding along the underground at first gear the engine shuts off twice with the clutch disengaged.

In the past few weeks ive noticed a change in the sounds. It is not as deep like a growl, its more of a lawnmower sound now. There does not seem to be an issue with power delivery.

Notes: When I tried using 89 Octane fuel it had the same engine sound.
Am I running lean? I think I am running stock.

they all run pretty lean from factory, there is a brass plug on the side of the carb that you need to drill and take out ( in tech section) under this cap is your air fuel mixture screw. you can try tinkering with that screw opening it up a little at a time (maybe think of re-jetting?) Everything you should need to know should be in the tech section here, and as far as shutting off i'll leave that to the more experianced techs here. have fun.

Have you checked your oil level?   :o

Might someone have changed your idle speed setting in the garage?...

It sounds like maybe your idle speed is too low...
Adjustment is on the left side of the carb, next to the choke knob...
You can turn it with your fingers...

I am told to check the valve clearance? does that make any sense?

Oh and yes I have checked the oil level. It seems to be okay for now. I will check again tonight with my buddy to look.

I am curious if i accidentally turned that setting while i was drying the bike last night from a wash.

stupid question (pardon me for butting in op).... how do you know what the idle speed is?  i bumped mine up a bit so it didn't sound so 'sputtery' at idle.

without a tach the easiest way is to idle in first gear and check your speed.  You should be going about 8 to 9mph at idle in first.  If you are going slower then that your idle is set to low.

I heard as well, too low idle can also leave you with oiling issues.... :-/
