This is what I did. I extended my highway pegs out 4" with stainless 1/4"  steel bar and stainless steel bolts. Could have gone to 5 or 6", but only did 4". It's fine for me. If you have really long legs you may want to go to 6".

http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r552/SUZUKIS40/0c5ea460.jpg  These are my 6" extenders. Because the engine guards are angled I had angle the extenders outward to get them level. If I had a way to bend them that would be better, but since I only have a 31" inseam so they work fine for me.  http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r552/SUZUKIS40/Extender%20bent%20in_zps8a325c2a.jpg   Found a way to bend the extender, A sledge hammer and a bench vice. The front wheel looks like it is close, but there is plenty of room.
