Title: I want one!
Post by AKing on 08/15/12 at 14:25:48

Hi everyone,

I'm planning on buying a savage/s40. Most likely used to save some cash. I'm not new to bikes and I've always wanted this particular model from when I was a teen. So pushing 30 now and it's time to pull the trigger.

I've done a lot of reading on this forum already and there is lots of amazing info. Thanks for that!

Anyways, Im curious if there are any model years to avoid??
Aside from the gearbox and that starter clutch thingy, I'm assuming not as they seem to be pretty similar through the years but just curious.

Thanks and cheers!
Andrew

Doesn't everyone?... ;D ;D ;D...

Welcome, Andrew...
I'd look for a 95' or newer... to get past the 4spd. starter problem...
$1200 to $1800 should get you a decent, low mile bike...
Best luck.. ;)...

I just bought a "new" 2007 S40 with 60 miles on it for $2000.
The seller bought it new for his wife but she soon lost interest.
It sat in the garage for five years so they put it on Craig's list
and I was the first to show up with cash and a trailer to haul it.
So my first bike is a new thumper and I'm learning to ride at the
tender young age of 65.
We've been getting some rain and slightly cooler weather here in
North Central Ohio and I'm seeing more scoots with For Sale signs
in front yards. There should be some bargains for careful shoppers.

Hey guys, 96 or newer is when Suzuki started using the part# 12600-24B11 LIMITER ASSY, STARTER IDLE GEAR.
86-87 and 95 used the old style. Andrew if you find an awesome deal on one of the older ones you can convert it to the newer limiter assembly. I own an 87 and that's what I did. You would need the limiter assembly, the 2 washers and a 96 or newer side cover. Takes about an hour and a half. I got the limiter assembly and cover on ebay. Good luck in your search.  :D

I purchased my 1996 LS650 last month in PA for $1,800. It has 4,400 miles on it and is completely stock. I was looking for a good starter bike and found this one at a great price on craigslist.

AKing, Good luck in your search and welcome to the forum.

Todd, Welcome to you also. I followed the same path as you in April of this year. Decided I wanted to learn to ride at 62 and bought a 2007 with 3600 miles. Took the MSF riders course and have logged about 2500 miles to date. Preparing the bike and planning the route for a 1600 mile round trip in about 3 weeks. Wish me luck.

Try this thread... Starter gear upgrade for 4speeds (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1288911670) ...I think that's what you're looking for.

That seems true. Bikes in the lower price range seem to be very few and far between around here. I have yet to spot anything under 2g's.

Thanks everyone
Cheers
Andrew

If you can do the work yourself, go for one with a few more K on the clock.  If not, just keep your eyes peeled.  I'll check on occasion as well, and keep ya posted if I find something good, seein' as ya just live down the way from me...

Renegade1; oops sorry about the confusion, meant to put 86-88. ::)
The post that EJID posted for you is the one that inspired me to make the change.
Also part# 12600-24B10 which was superceeded by 12600-24B11 is used from 96 to 2009. Hope that helps.

I have an 87 with the 4 speed.  I actually like it really well.   I find that with the thumper's torque, I do very little shifting.  It accelerates very well from 40 mph without downshifting.  The ratio of top gear is only slightly different than a 5 speed.  I do appreciate the info on the starter gear upgrade.  I bought mine with 3800 miles for $900, but I had to do a couple of things before I could ride it.

Well, as quoted from the upgrade post as written by Verslagen1:

"Pre'95's don't have a starter torque limiting clutch.  So what happens is on shut down the engine kicks back on the last rev.  This will engage the one way clutch and bust out the mounting of either the gears or the starter.  Not something that can be easily fixed.   :'(

But, as it turns out easily prevented.  All post '95's have a torque limiter gear that releases the torque before it blows out the mounts.  So how do you get those gears on the old bikes?  Simple, buy the torque limiter, a post '95 idler gear and stator cover.  And the darn thing just bolts in."

My 87 has 17000 miles and luckily nothing was broken. But, when I shut it off, every two to three times it would kick back and clunk very sharply. So, when I read Verslagen1's post I knew I was going to make the change no matter what. Incidentally I got a limiter assembly on ebay that came off a 1998 VL1500 which uses the same part. Now when it shuts off it still will kick backwards every few times but it doesn't cluck anymore. And I get piece of mind. Research the parts a little bit on oem micro-fiche and if you are mechanically inclined you can make the change fairly easily. :)

Verslagen, I'd like to take credit for figuring it out, but I stumbled upon it doing a part# search on ebay.  ::)

Too pricey? It's nice to know they hold their value, though ( that's what I paid for mine 2 years ago). If you offer them 3500 just before month end (as they did me) you could pick it up for 3500.
It has the gel seat, windshield, and saddlebags already.
Just don't finance it through them though.

we all stumble onto some good stuff once in awhile.
some wander off in a daze.
some grab on to their good fortune.
