Title: Oil Temp Gauge Found.
Post by Drifter on 06/26/12 at 12:54:07

Found a couple of gauges that will fit the savage/S40 slightly different style and length. Price seems reasonable.   :)  These are M20x1.5 thread pattern. I tried to get a group buy...no luck. The price is right anyway.

It's all one piece just screw it into the access port, analog temp guage.

wish it went a bit higher.

You need the short one teach the long one will make contact inside the case.

I have one of the short ones on my Triumph works great.  I have seen temps of 250 on hot days in traffic.

Anyone find one of these oil temp gauges that fit directly to the access port in Fahrenheit for the LS650?  The only ones I keep coming across are Celsius for our bikes  :-?

Celsius is the way to go! Zero is freezing and 100 is boiling - doesn't that make more sense? (Easy for the Canadian to say, I know...)  ;)

Once you've gone metric you'll never go back! ;)

I use the metric temps on all my electronics as that is what most of the tech specs are in,  but everything else I'm used to the American system :P

Yea- the US is right up there with Burma and Liberia as world leaders in the resistance to metric. ;)
Hey- that would be an excellent job creation program for the US. :o
Then the rest of the world wouldn't have to convert when dealing with them.

To be honest I wouldn't mind going to the metric system,  it's much easier to understand since it's all multiples of 10 so it makes conversions to the higher or lower designations very simple.

Recently my son asked me to measure his closet so he could pack it full of stuff as he was moving out of his apartment and I told him the measurements in cubits. ;D

I have one similar to this one (the short-tap version on the right in the picture) that I bought from a site in Germany several years ago.  So far it seems to work, even if it is in Celsius.

I bought this one from this site and it works perfect. Yeah its in Celsius but the 120 mark is in red so it doesn't really matter. If its at 120 or after then pull over and cool off. I can make a quick glance and spot it while moving too if I'm ever curious.

"What -me-worry" ?  dino oil doesn't brake down until it hits 350 F ,Our bikes run about 270-300F on the hottest days and that is the temp at the head ,not the oil sump. , If your paranoid , run synthetic oil it's good to 500F . I'm much more concerned with watching my oil level ,than the temperature.(why pull over if your oil hits 120C -248F ? the boiling point of water maybe 212F but the boiling point of  motor .oil is about 572F.  Your oil pump raises the pressure on the oil which further raises the boiling point).   Bottom line ,a temperature gauge is a waste of time and money unless your into Steampunk .If your bike is running to warm ,it's more likely your carb is jetted to lean,or your running 50 weight oil thinking it protects better than 40, which is a mistake.

Last trip to Galveston Reelthing gave me one of those.. He was digging around in the garage and found one that he no longer had a bike to screw it into..
They are a well built gizmo, they fit in with the size of the bike, and offer a comfort, being able to protect the engine from scorched oil.
The gauge can be twisted around to put the red dot out where you Can lean out and see it. It's oil filled to protect the guts from vibration.

Requires a grip to unscrew.
A strap on a stick would do it and be easy to haul with a small oil container. I carry a Two Stroke oil bottle. Just a couple of ounces, but that can be the difference between
Low
And
Enuff

I THINK that will work, but to be sure, just pull the fill plug and measure to the obstruction. You can use a piece of wire to find it, mark it , pull and measure.
