I do not have a video with sound of them, but it seems that one may have been posted a few years back ... but the memory is very fuzzy on that. The Hard Krome mufflers are a loud muffler and do have removable steel spiral baffles, but they are loud enough that removal is not needed. Besides, the engine needs the back pressure created by the baffles. I am doing a 17/43 chain conversion and am a little heavy on the throttle, so whatever CAM will help make up the low end loss I will have with the chain conversion is the one I think I should go for. Number 2 or 3? I do not have the bike apart right now so I do not have a CAM to send. Do you have one to send initially? Most folks just cut the center out of a soda can and wrap it around the end of the header a time or two, push the new muffler on and clamp it down. The thin aluminum takes up the extra space and "crushes" down quite well and makes a very good exhaust seal. If you ever take the muffler off to do something, I would use fresh aluminum when you put the muffler back to get a good fresh seal. It is as good as most anything else and costs nothing to do it.The muffler is $50 + shp and I will toss the pilot jet in. |

Expect a massive drop in fuel economy (like 10 mpg less if you have stock buckhorns, in HALF if you have apehangers). The Mikuni BS40 has got to be the worst piece of junk that J.A. Pan Inc ever installed on a mid-sized bike... It's an 883 Sporty upgrade. >:( |

You do need to make a gasket between the header pipe and the muffler but the mounting rail on the back of the muffler fits correctly to the 2 mount holes on the S40 frame. Use carriage bolts to not spin in the muffler rail; 8mm or 5/16th by 1". For the gasket I used aluminum sheet a bit thicker than a tin can. I cut a 1 1/2" strip and cut a 45 degree angle on each end that matched up after 2 circles of the header, 3 wraps wouldn't fit. I found 2 Dyna mufflers on ebay for $40 + $20 freight. They were like new perfect. Google "dyna muffler 64941-01". There are a number of them available on ebay today. |

So I cannot really say what the Camshaft does all by itself, since I have not had JUST the Camshaft and no other modification in my engines. That said however, the Camshaft does determine the CHARACTER of the engine. The stock cam of the LS650 engine is "mild mannered" to say the least. A Performance Camshaft will give this engine some real ATTITUDE. These particular camshafts, the Stage 1,2 & 3, are not "Race" cams, but good efficient torque producing cams which is what this engine needs because that is what this engine is made to do, so you go with its strong points and enhance them. At this point I am only producing the Stage 3. I think it has the best qualities of the 3. |

Keep in mind that with the 97mm piston, you gain 42cc in engine volume, which is a minor effect compared to the rise in compression ratio from 8.5:1 to 10.5:1. |

The Spring kit is made for extremely high lift cam profiles, which mine are not. The springs in the kit will work in the LS650 but were made for the DR650 high lift cams for 1990-1995 model years. The cam core is the same as ours but the profile is quite different. I am making the Stage 3 cam only now. It works very well with the natural engine characteristics. The Stage 2 pushed the power too high in the rpm range to be useful for most of our riding, which is in the low and mid range. I have both the 97mm piston and 94mm pistons. 95% of the power gain is due to the increase in Compression from 8.5:1 to 10.5:1, with only a fraction from the increase in cylinder size from 650 to 695cc. Using the 94 also saves $$ by not having to bore the cylinder, just a good hone is needed. Payment is usually by PayPal, made to savage.s40@gmail.com. I can email you an invoice if you prefer using a credit or debit card. I also accept cash or checks as well. Cost of the Stage 3 cam is $299 with your cam core in exchange. If you need the Stage 3 cam before removing your old cam, in order to be able to ride while waiting for the new one, then a $100 refundable deposit is required, and will be refunded upon my receipt of your cam core. ** Current turn around time for a new cam to be manufactured is 5-6 weeks. At times I have a few in stock, but not always. I have 3 being made now and they should be ready in about 2 weeks. One of those is already paid for by another member, so 2 possible remaining. They do not last very long so if you want one then you need to process payment and you will be next on the list to receive one. Ideally, for good running, the inside volume of a muffler should be the same volume as the engine so try to avoid small mufflers and especially straight pipes. |

Well man, you know your stuff, you gave some helpful hints, and suggestions on jet sizes etc. Spot on!!!! 3800 miles this summer to date!!!! Problem NOW... due to the increase in power, and the age of probably the stock clutch components, I am experiancining a tad bit of clutch slippage!!!:( I feel it will make it thru this season, but EXPECT an order for clutch plates and spring this winter from me!!! About your clutch, I assume you have adjusted it as far as possible already. Have you checked that little metal rod out on the end of the clutch Pak ? If that is no longer long enough another longer one should be available. It seems like there are 3 lengths, and if yours is one of the shorter ones then you can just swap it for a longer one. Also, it is possible that a set of stronger springs may solve your problems. The clutch plates used are pretty darn durable so unless they measure below specs don’t assume you need to order a set, a clutch Pak is $125. |

I feel more comfortable swapping out instead of trying to tear apart and rebuild, and I see you have offered complete kits in the past for a VM36 but not seeing a recent post for what 'I think' I need. If you can give me the whole shebang with throttle cable and flange, I am very interested, or help with how to go about it is appreciated too as I found the VM36-4 online but may need accessories from you to make it all work. I have a mikuni vm36 carb and until a month or so ago it was running like a swiss watch as my oppo said ( who knows more about bikes than he does swiss watches ). Anyways there appeared a nasty rattly noise so after a bit i realised it wasn't going to cure itself so I took the head cover off and the rocker pads and the lobes of the cam look like had been having serious problems the cam lobes looked like they had been worn down to the original profile. Any ideas of what I did wrong or failed to do right? many thanks in advance Steddy I've tried to enclose pics but it will only let me put one up |
