Title: Heat shield question
Post by Greg on 05/28/12 at 08:19:28

Since the HD muffler is a different size than the stock muffler, which size heat shield should I get to cover the ugly joint? I am leaning towards 1.75" x 7" long. Or should I get the 2" shield?

The OD of the connection on the Savage is 1.75" - the fatter portion of the pipe is 2.00".  The Harley muffler OD is about 1-7/8".  I don't know what kind of adapter or clamp you used.

I would think the 2" would work best.

Thanks! That makes sense to me! No adapter just slits in the HD muffler and a Harley clamp.

The shield I ordered from JC Whitney wouldn't clamp right, so I just twisted wire on the back side. Holds great and doesn't show.

I left the stock shield on to cover the joint and I think it actually fits the look very well.

I have been considering that as well. I ordered a 2". I will put each on and see which I prefer. Thanks for the photo!

This is with the stock heat shield. When my other one comes in I will show the difference.

I'm having the same issue, so would it be best to get a 2' shield or another original? I had to chuck my original as it was bent pretty bad.

I also plan on adjusting the jets this weekend, I've been getting too much backfire.  It's kinda fun but probably not good for the engine or muffler. hehe

Where did you order a different size heat shield from?

If you are running the Harley muffler, I think an aftermarket 2" shield looks better. It is up to you though.

That stock shield fits like socks on a rooster once the OEM trashcan muffler is gone.

Yes, I have a Harley Dyna muffler. That 2" is exactly the clean look I want. Where did you find that?

not trying to hi jack your thread here but I have been STRUGGLING for literally over a month trying to find a way to put my dyna muffler on my stock header with out any leaks. Its really cut into riding season. i have bought an assortment of adaptors from local stores and NOTHING has made a good seal all of them leak. at this point im tempted to weld the darn thing on!  >:(  did you put any type of gasket or sealer on? does your joint leak?  :-?  i cant imagine it being that simple.

I used a cut off wheel to put slits in the muffler. The slits should not be longer than the clamp is wide. I would suggest a total of 8. A hacksaw blade does not remove enough material. I have used many things for the shim/gasket. The best is a tin can that veggies or something come in that has the ridges. I cut it so it just overlapped when wrapped around the header. Very important is the clamp. It needs to compress all the way around. Let me find the one I am using. It works great.

Very similar to this:

T-Bolt Clamp

I tried the tin can "crush seal" and had no luck but i did use a hack saw blade maybe i need to remove more material? the clamp i have is a harly davidson accu clamp it seems to have a decent grip. but ill seriously do what ever it takes at this point. ive missed out on a fair bit of riding due to this exhaust mounting problem.

I added a photo of the clamp in my reply. I had no luck with the HD clamp I had.

What size clamp would you recommend?  1.75 or 2"?

OK. I forgot one part of the equation. The necked down part of my header was preventing the muffler from sliding on all the way. I cut that off and everything worked great. The carriage bolt lined up with the factory mount without any issues.

This is the clamp I am using:

Do all Harley mufflers work?
What is the difference in sound?
Does anyone know of any video clips of specific Harley mufflers so I can determine which one I want to try to find cheap on ebay?

Does anyone know of any specific part numbers to search for?
do they all sound the same?
Do they all attatch the same?
