Title: Risers
Post by Greg on 05/27/12 at 18:50:18

Will any riser for 1" bars work on the Savage? I have a 2002 with the buckhorn bars. From my searching here it appears that I can get 4" risers without having to purchase cables. Does that sound right? I want risers that lift and angle back. Does that limit the height?

I hate to bump my question, but I just want to make sure I am understanding the riser thing correctly.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I may have another solution.
If the risers cost around $100, you might think about keeping the risers you have and getting new handlebars.
I bought Builtwell Frisco bars which have an 8" rise and a bit of pull-back.
I used the cables (clutch and brake line) from an older bike with buck horns as they are about 4" longer than those on the drag bar bikes (post 2004), and the stock buckhorn risers. The advantage of the Builtwell bars is that you can position them forward or back to suit your riding position very easily.
Just a thought.
I am pretty sure (but not certain) that if you add 4" of rise to the buck horns you will have to get custom cables made up. What you can do is measure the cables you have with string and see if you have enough extra length for 4" more rise.

Thanks for the reply. I was considering new bars as well. The Friscos have 8" rise and I think mine have 5" rise. 8-5=3. So 3" risers or new bars should do the trick.

Don't forget that the risers you have have 1.5" or so rise already.

See if you can find an independent bike shop around that works on H-Ds. We had one here for a while & it was an excellent source of parts to mod for the Savage. They had storage boxes full of take off parts. I picked up a set of stainless steel handlebars for $10. I got my flooorboards for $40 a pair & they had a stack of mufflers for $20 each, your choice. I was going to get an engine guard & a seat to modify but they moved out of town & I haven't been able to find where they went.  >:( :-? 8-)

I thought my stock ones were replaced with the new ones. I wasn't aware they were added to them. Thanks!

We have one in town. I got my muffler there. They have tons of used stuff. I will check out the seat and handlebar selections.

and somewhere there's mention of using many things as risers.

3/4" deep sockets, bmx footpegs and on and on.

Your stock ones are replaced. I only mentioned it because your calculations are off unless you take into account the (minimal) rise of the stock risers.
Example: If you figure you need 4 more inches of rise you would need to add the stock rise you have to the 4" to determine the height of the new risers.
Clear as mud? ;D

Gotcha! That is what I figured. Thanks!

Thank you for the link. I would like to try what BarneyBWilde did but Lowe's doesn't list metal spacers, just plastic. He hasn't been online for over a year so I doubt he would get my PM. Any ideas what was used so I can make this work?

He did respond to my email. I found the parts I needed and raised my bars 1.5". It feels like a new bike. I will see how it works on my longer rides. Thanks all!
