Last weekend I went to New York to pick up my new Savage. The trip was a real adventure (1,400 miles in 2.5 days).

While traveling through Pennsylvania on I-80 I found out about a place called Bill's Old Bike Barn. Since I was a few hours ahead of schedule I stopped and paid my $ 5.00 admission and got to see an incredible collection of old bikes and other stuff. It was an amazing place. Bill also has a bike shop in front of the museum and seems to specialize in Harley choppers. Here is the website: http://billsbikebarn.com/

One of the things that got my attention was a Puch Twingle engine cutaway. It showed that the engine has two pistons running in the same casting and connected to a common crank pin. The front piston control the exhaust discharge and the timing of the mixture inlet to the crankcase - while the rear cylinder has the transfer ports and times the mixture delivery from the crankcased. The front cylinder has the twin exhaust ports - they pistons share a common combustion chamber. From what I have read the arrangements improves fuel economy. Pretty weird!

Its a little easier to get some of the theory of operation here. I could spend a few hours on it I think.

Ive looked at everything I can find on it, I have 2 stroke experience, playing with model planes & understand the way they work, & I think I get it now, but who ever came up with the connecting rod setup to get those pistons running togetherish,,kinda sorta,, was having one heck of a mechanical hallucination,,

Pics aren't hard, just take the same internet picture location cut you used a couple of posts before and put it inside the little gizmo that sits right above the underline in the text block controls on the post page.

One thing that was surprising.....is how tall/long the pistons are. They appear about twice the height of a normal piston. Also when I moved the kick starter the engine spun the opposite way the wheels on the motorcycle turn - so the rear piston reached top dead center a few degrees after the front one did.

Pistons have to be long to keep the ports closed off while they go to TDC.

Fairbanks-Morse made horizontally opposed engines with two crankshafts. Imagine a spark plug perpendicular to and in the middle of a long cylinder. Now think of a piston on the right and one on the left of that plug. The connecting rods run to cranks on the right outside and left outside of the engine. One explosion moves two pistons in opposite directions with cranks geared together.

Had a 175 Puch Enduro in the late 70s. Only ran wide open with a narrow power band, but man it was tough. Metzeler tires, Ceriani forks, Betor shocks, Magura grips, rim locks, $600 new. :'(
