Wiki has it as...

1913: Packard introduces the spiral-gear differential, which cuts gear noise.
1926: Packard introduces the hypoid differential, which enables the propeller shaft and its hump in the interior of the car to be lowered.

my guess would be that the informercial is pre-WWII... about 1930ish

Good guess, V. The film mentioned at the start was from 1935. :)

That's one of the best demonstrations for a differential I've ever seen. 8-)
Now find one for planetaries. :-/
