Title: Remove rust from your chrome - in 2 seconds
Post by JayMI on 07/24/11 at 04:39:07

Here is a extremely fast and cheap way to get that rust off your chrome - of course, you didn't let it get that way - you must have gotten the bike that way  ;)

Simple, take a chunk on aluminum foil, crumple it into a ball, dunk it in some clean water and rub on the rust - doesn't take any time or pressure at all - in a second or two .... TA DA

First time I hear this. It makes sense. Thank you.

Lets just say I was shocked at the results from doing this ... I only bought this bike less than a month ago and the back of the mirrors and spots on the rims and handlebars had rust .... After only about 5 minutes, there is not a speck of rust on it and it shines ....   Funny something so simple works so well ---  Just wanted to pass it on, couldn't keep it to myself :-)

I use NevrDull, works good, but I'll try that definitelly.

I add a drop or two of dishwashing liquid to the water.  But the first time I tried it, I was truly amazed too.

Would the same approach work for bare (unpainted) sheet metal with a small amount of surface rust?

I posted this in the daily tips when I first heard about it a few months back. I use soapy warm water. Someone else mentioned that chrome is a harder metal than the aluminum foil thus the foil does not scratch the chrome. I did this to my Savage when I bought her back in March. It time to do it again on the mirrors and handlebars.

Works wonders.

I tried it as well. Works great and also
removes marks from the muffler where
my chaps touched when hot.
I have passed this on to others.
Thanks for the great tip.. :) kim

We've found that Bar Keeper's Friend (powdered rather than liquid) works extremely well too.  It was suggested to us by the gentleman who maintained our 40 foot motor yacht.  The salt water environment wreaks havoc on chrome and polished stainless steel.  Bar Keeper's worked wonders though it's not as tidy as aluminum foil (the film has to be rinsed off and then the chrome needs to be dried).  Still, it's worth the effort on our opinion.

Someone else now owns the boat (thankfully) but we still use Bar Keeper's on rusty chrome.

One thing about the aluminum foil method is that the surface rust WILL return after not too long depending on your region and if you store your bike outside or not.

It's a great Temporary fix. The chrome needs to be treated with something that will protect it after getting rid of the surface rust.

solid point fish, i live amongst the murky salty sea and rust is hiding around every corner, everything needs a coat of something to protect it, rust starts forming immediately after new metal is exposed

White vinegar works well on small rust spots/rust pits.  Dab it on, let it sit for a few minutes and wipe the area with a terry towel.

When I heard about the aluminum foil trick I was told to use Coke with it, and it worked well and provided me some refreshement while polishing.  It does leave things a little sticky.....and you have to use something to remove the sticky sugar.

Like that idea.

Yesterday I showed a friend with a very rusty Honda junk yard bike  this trick.  He then went and got some very fine steel wool and a bottle of Turtle Wax chrome polish.  His muffler was very rusty and the aluminum worked fine on the smaller spots of rust - but it did leave the rust spot a little "proud" of the surface and you could feel a bump of rust.  His steel wool worked just as fast as the aluminum - but it took off the bump.  He did comment the aluminum was a neat trick, and his method is probably more expensive as it requries steel wool and chrome polish.....but it did work better.
