This cruiser sets on display in a park by the Bremerton Naval Hospital.
It is on loan from the Naval Station, Pensacola, Florida.

The F8 is actually nicknamed "crusader" but close enough. My Marine Corps squadron (VMFA-323) flew them in the 60's long before I joined the Marines. When I got to that sqaudron they had been flying F4 Phantoms for quite a few years. The year after I got out of the Marines, the squadron transitioned into the F18 Hornet. If I had re-enlisted I would have gone back to aircraft mainainence school to learn the F18.

Also has an yellow "rescue" sticker on
it. Were these used for rescue missions
of some type? Again their was not much
information with it. Sad as that would
have been nice to post along with the pic.
Thought this was an interesting plane and
would make an interesting pic as well. Seems
I was right, for once. ;)

The yellow arrow that says Rescue on it is to show the rescue personel where the control is to remove the canopy. There should be one on the opposite side of the airplane that says "rescue other side". Kinda hard to use a mach speed airplane to do any rescues. When I was stationed on the aircraft carrier, we had a few F8's for photo recon. They were fittied with several cameras to take pictures of ground targets.

F8Us were called the "Last of the gunfighters". The four cannons were considered unnecessary with the advent of air to air missiles like the sidewinders.

Right, so the F4's were designed without any internal cannons. But they carried external gun pods but were mostly ineffective. The Marine F4's used the external pods for strafing mostly but the extra drag caused performance problems . They finally addressed the problem with the F4E version that had an internal cannon.

Kim, my kids go to Build- a- bear store every time they need to dress up their stuffed dogs. I bet they have a helmet for Bunny. If you don't have a build a bear there, I can go by and pick one up a helmet and mail it to you. :D
