I judt bought a 1996 LS650 Savage with 9100 miles on it, I've put about 500 miles so far but I notice my drive belt started squaking specially at the front pulley, any ideas why and what can be done to fix this besides canddle wax?

a million posts on this topic,.. try a search...

Adjust tension,... alignment,... beeswax,... baby powder,... lube,... grind the belt (I did)...

I just got back from a 2,000+ mile trip to Montana on my S40. I ran through some rain, and when the belt dried out, it chirpped like hell. The alignment was good, and the tension was good, so knew it wasn't a systemic problem.

I stopped and picked up a can of WD-40, sprayed the belt, and that was the end of the chirp. That was about 1/2 way through the trip, and didn't seem to have any ill effects.

I farmed for 12 years, and we use to spray down all of the v-belts on our swathers and combines before we stored them for the winter. Kept the rubber softened up, and prevented the pullies from rusting. That is where I got the idea for the bike.

I'll make sure I always carry a small can with me. :)

could be excessive tension or alignment.

tension...
grab the belt on the low side in the middle give or take a mile...
if you can twist it 90° it's fine.

Alignment...
lift the rear wheel off the ground, take the bike outta gear and spin the wheel. Watch the belt, does it track to one side? Tighten the side it tracks to. Repeat spinning the wheel the other way. Try to get it in the middle or at least not hard against either side. If you can't getRdone, check the pulley bearings, spacers on right side, and dampers.
