Title: Some People????
Post by Wolfman on 05/17/11 at 21:55:57

Was comeing out of the courthouse today and as i got on my bike skinny dude with a tat pushing a baby carriage with his old lady walks up.
Says "Is that a Harley?"
My bikes still got the badges n all, im proud of suzuki, good motors.
If he had simply looked he would of seen it wasnt a harley.
I told him "No its a suzuki S40"
He looks at me and says "no offence but if it aint a harley it aint a real Motorcycle!"
I just kinda shake my head and keep putting my helmet on and tell him "well  some of harleys parts are made in china and just assembled in the USA, So its as much a motorcycle as a harley is!"

He dont respond which is fine by me. I slip on the gloves, start her up and ride off the square a lil more noisly then usual by him just laughing to myself. Thinking this dude probaly aint ever even been on a bike.
Could of spouted cost and dependability to him but would of been a waste of my time and breath.
Im a firm beleiver in 'Ride Your Ride' and dont slam another mans pony.

Funny thing is leaveing town i passed two different harley baggers and got waves from both of them.(Uncommon)...lol

BSA founded 1861, offered motorcycles in 1920
BMW motorcycles in 1923 (Daimler Reitwagen is the world's 1st motorcycle)
Harley Davidson founded 1903
Indian founded 1901
Triumph founded 1885

and the lists goes on and on.

Real motorcycles are riden.

"If I liked farm tools,.. I'd have been a farmer"...

"My other bike's a Harley,... it's in the shop where it belongs"...

... or if they have to ask,... "Why yes,.. it is a Harley"...

...or..."If you have to ask,... you're not near as cool as you think you are"...

:-?...

I keep gettnig asked "is that a harley?"
And i keep telling them no its a Boulevard S40. Which just puzzles the he!! out of them...lol
Says Boulevard on the tank in BIG letters, i like my badges.
Half the time they start talking about their harley then and its usualy 'in the shop'...lol
All i care is you ride, could care less what you ride.

Had a kid all apolegetic like come up and start talking to me in wal-mart awhile back. Said all he rode was an old Knighthawk like he was ashamed of it.
Told him them Hawks was GOOD bikes and not to worry what anyone else rode. To ride his own ride. He kinda brightened up then and smiled. Then looked me up and down and said you sure got 'the look' down. Jeezzz, just cause i got a ponytail goatee and was wearing leather n jeans and a doorag? I had to laugh at him and think this is just the way i dress. I dont dress for others or for 'the look.'

Mom agravtes me as she always worries about what one of the neighbors or someone else will think about something.
Im the type im the way i am and everybody else can take me as i am or kiss off. I dress for me and i ride for me, dont worry what anyone else thinks...lol

Ahhh the stigma, im a biker so im immediately a scarey bada$$. But i dont ride a harley so i cant really be a scarey bada$$.  Wonder what sigmund  would say about that.[smiley=rolleyes.gif] ;D

Yeah, if you have to ask..just how much do you know about bikes anyway?
(which admittedly, I don't know much about bikes, but can generally read when it says on the bike "xxxx")

There is nothing wrong with purchasing foreign. I own 2 foreign cars but they were both built here in the states. They both were built by americans and only some of the parts were foreign.

But everyone is entitled to their opinion. You did the right thing. I get it all the time.

Enjoy the ride. It just gets better and better. Only riders understand it doesn't matter what your riding, your just out there for the thrill and the escape.

Ride safe.

Most of the Harley owners I have ridden with are impressed with the S40, especially when I get on it and the Raask exhaust screams at them as I pull away. One said it hurt his ears. I have the Corbin seat and 6" forward controls and everyone who has sat on it has commented favorably on how comfortable it is. One stealer mechanic told me that when he test drove it he liked it so much that he spent some extra time on it, and even put gas in it. I have rubber knee pads on it and usually it is mistaken for a Triumph at first sight.

Post by WD on 05/18/11 at 05:26:57

Everyone thinks mine is an antique brit bike. Once you deep six the useless head chrome it looks like a much older design. And since it is basically a warmed over Matchless or BSA (and the late great XS650 was a straight up BSA rip-off)...

I can understand their confusion.

Even since I cut my hair again (Locks of Love in memory of my brother in law Chris), people are still scared of me. Couple old club tattoos, missing an upper incisor, usually wearing Nazi jackboots when I ride...

I acknowledge every bike i pass on the road with the left hand drop 2 - and the only one who has not acknowledged back is an older gentleman on a gold wing who drives with both hands on the controls at all times and looks like he has a foriegn object implanted in his posterior....all of the Harley riders i have passed have been friendly.....and the group ride a few weeks ago i was the only single cylnder bike in the group - no one said anything unkind about it....now I am not looking to take it to the county line biker bar anytime soon - I pass it on my Sunday ride and they kind of get a fixed stare at me as i pass, not sure i want them to get a closer at the bike or me, for now.

So, what is "the look" all about anyway? This was what I wore one day.  I had to preach a funeral.   Someone said I was the best dressed rider he had seen in a while.  :D

People don't think I have the "preacher look" either.

But, I am OK with that.  I'm too busy being me to worry about that.

Mike, your proof that you can't
judge nor should you a book
or rider by their covers..

When I first got Genie back
in 09, I had ridden to the
grocery store for a couple
things.
Upon coming back to the bike,
man comes up, asks me is that
a Harley? I said no, Suzuki..
Are you sure he asks me?
I said yes, I do know what I ride.
Then pointed to the Suzuki across
her rear fender. As well as to the
Suzuki Boulevard that is on both
sides of her tank.
He told me that HD used to use the
2-toned paint on the tanks. That was
what had made him to think it was a HD..

I have been ribbed since I started riding.
When I had my scooter, questions asked
when are you gonna ride a real bike?
Same when I had the Rebel 250..
Even was asked why I didn't get a HD when
I got Genie..
I said well I was going to get a HD..Then decided
I wanted to ride a "real bike."..lol..
My answer to the smart alicks got to be,
it beats what you ride..
Which was nothing. I also said, I have the guts
to ride. Where are yours?
I do get defensive, yet am a redhead. Do I need
to say more?
And no, it does not matter to me what a person
rides. I am impressed more so by the fact that
you ride..
I ride my style, my way..:) kim

They say that 80% of the Harleys ever made are still on the road.

The other 20% made it home.

(It's a JOKE son, a JOKE.. ya'll are suppose to laugh )

Title: Re: Some People????
Post by 12Bravo on 05/18/11 at 08:48:10

I have had people ask the same thing if its a Harley or they ask where the second cylinder is. I have even more fun with people when I am on my Suzuki Burgman scooter. I love when a Harley pulls up next to me at stop lights and the rider gives me trouble about being on a scooter. Once the light turns green, I twist the throttle and leave the Harleys behind  ;D If someone has to ask if the Savage/S40 is a Harley, they don't know a thing about bikes and aren't worth the time talking to.

People are always thinkin' mine is an old Triumph or BSA...

"Peugeot?...
"Well,... the sticker is"... :-?...

Some folks(usualy non riders) just dont get it. It dont matter what you ride as long as you ride.

I have noticed i get a lot more excuse me's and folks giveing me room to get by in wal-mart when im togged out though...lol Funny how just a couple of pieaces of clothes makes a differance in how people react to you. :D
I just laugh and go on by. Im just as mean in my civies as i am in my bike gear. ::) ;D

Post by babyhog on 05/18/11 at 12:39:59

My first thought was the same as bluedad said... if they have to ask, they don't know much about bikes.  And I think people ask if its a Harley because they think that would be a compliment if it happens to NOT be a Harley, or that's the only brand they ever heard of.

I don't have anything against any brand of bike, and I don't think that makes me un-American.  The worst thing to me about Harleys is the fact that its a Harley.  I'd hate to own one and then defend that I had it "just because" its a Harley.  Whatever bike I own its because its the one I want.  Period.  (but I do love my Harley boots!)

But you did good Wolfman!

Title: Re: Some People????
Post by BurnPgh on 05/18/11 at 16:00:18

my instructor gives me crap about my bike sometimes. he's an old harley guy. Used to race flat track. I think he just fell in love with his xr750 back in the day and wont budge on his brand opinion because he talks crap on his own 883 too. Then again when i pull in i see him get remeniscent of old singles he used to have/restore too. He'll just listen and say "....nothing like a single."

Usually I'll get "what is that?" or "nice bike." Get a lot of crap from harley riders. Best ever...i was in a storage unit facility with a buddy and some guy comes over, practically running around that corner "Is that a BSA!?"

side note - Anyone looking for a resto project? He's got a basket case ajs/matchless. He's almost got 2 of them. 2 sets of wheels, two engines i think. Just one frame though. He says its a 600cc single, but I cant seem to find any matchless 600's that werent twins. Im thinking its probably a modified g80. '62 i think he said. He was aksing $2k for everything, or maybe $2500. Near Pittsburgh PA. Anyone thats interested I'll put you in touch.

Title: Re: Some People????
Post by WD on 05/18/11 at 18:00:53

I definitely find it humorous/flattering if someone thinks Pokey (short for Slo-Pokey) is an old British single. Leaks like one. Has since day one.

I am an old Harley rider (I'm not old, my Harleys were). And an old Indian rider.

I don't wear "biker look" clothes as a fashion statement. My bikes leak, hot oil stings. I'm too cheap to get a haircut unless forced (or for memorial reasons/kids charities). Don't shave because I'm lazy, same reason I don't wash/wax my vehicles. No front tooth because the US Navy repair was sub-standard (and I'm broke).

I am what bikers used to be, dirty, smelly, broke, uncouth, crude, obnoxious... I work for a living.  ;D

OK, you've just topped the list!

I've seen "Are you a real biker?" tests that ask, "Have you ever ridden your motorcycle to a funeral?" followed by "To a funeral for a non-rider?"

You're the first I've ever known who can answer "To officiate at a funeral?" with a big YES!

prechermike, My preacher makes you look life a Philadelphia Lawyer. He once put on his camo coveralls and fed his cows before our Sunday night service. Got back from the barn and realized that he was locked out of his house. Car keys were in his car, so we had a very short lesson from a big guy burning up in camo coveralls. He's a great guy no matter how he's dressed.

and a riding Catholic priest with an Indian (Omaha or Winnebago tribe) flute:

Many many moons ago i recall a story of the local preacher for the lil church down in the toolies my family used to frequent.
Guy was a good fella, he just like his 'spirits' so to speak.
6 days a week he was falling down drunk, come sunday he was a fire n brimstone preacher.

One story i recall was my uncle was going down the road and seen a body laying in the ditch in the rain,. He stopped to check it out. It was the preacher and he was three sheets to the wnid and face down in the ditch. Supposedly not uncommon.
Uncle roled him face up so he wouldnt drown in the ditch and went on his way. That sunday you wouldnt know anything had happened...lol
I met him when i was lil and he seemed a decent man, but oh the stories i heard over the years.
Preachers just aint what they used to be. :D

I like my S40 even more than I  liked my 883, but that's probably because I've added things to my S40 that the 883 didn't have.  I've found that most H-D guys are decent about whatever you ride and that most of the ones that try to give you grief either don't ride at all or their machine sits in their garage because they're afraid to put too many miles on it or to let it get dirty in the rain.  When I rode my H-D I had to laugh at some of the guys that wouldn't wave to "rice," yet their machines were loaded with Eagle Iron products (made in China) and their leathers were all imported.  I didn't miss the opportunity to let them know about that either.  I'm a huge believer in free enterprise and capitalism.  The free market and individualism is what made America great.  Next time someone rags about your "rice burner," just ask them "Where would Harley-Davidson be if the Japanese motorcycle industry didn't exist?"  They would still be back in the AMF days for sure.  God bless America!

Honestly im not crazy about harleys. Dont want mine mistaken for a harley. Rather ride a zuk or kaw myself.
Suzuki makes some d@mn good engines.
Kinda partial to the bandit and 650rs maybe a honda cbr if i had the money.
The kawi vulcan line is nice, maybe a 900.
But if i have my druthers my next will be an s50 maybe a lil bigger.
Want to keep it small enough to rip the twisties but big enough i could do some two up day or weekend touring. Course a nice 1250 bandit would work for that to. ;D

Main thing is were all pretty much in agreement,
it is a great bike and, we love riding it.. :) kim
