Title: 1999 Savage sat for over 10 years.  HELP!!!
Post by mark1972 on 04/18/11 at 16:45:19

I just bought a 1999 Savage that sat in a garage for over 10 years.  I'm new to riding and this bike was as close to new as i could afford.  I bought it with only 27 miles on the odometer last month.  And of course it had gas in it for the entire 10 years and had not been winterized or even started for the 10 years too.  So i bought a new battery and it started on the first try,  I had my brother pick it up in his truck and we brought it to my house. I drained the old gas replaced it with new gas, changed the oil and filter, and ran a couple of seafoam treatments over the past month. So here I am now after 300 miles of riding some country and some highway.  The bike hesitate while riding, it doesnt stall and it only backfired 5 to 6 times when i deceled the throtle fast.  The hesitation is noticable in all gears and at all speeds.  I dont know much about motorcycles but i am good with instructions.  CAN ANYONE OFFER THEIR HELP??

Thanks,
           Mark

I live in New Jersey just across the river from Philadelphia, If anyone is close to me I would be willing to make a road trip. I seem to learn best hands on, I would pay for the help.

Your hesitation may be the slide sticking.
seafoam will help but won't fix it fast cause not a lot of gas gets on it.
I'd pull the carb and clean it.

Yeah, there's only so much Seafoam can do. When I got my bike, it had been sitting at least two years. The inside of the carb looked like this:

I soaked it in some of this:

It came out looking like this:

Even so, I took it apart and replaced all the jets.

Yours probably isn't as bad inside, but something isn't right.

You could also have crud in the tank. The fact the problem developed after 300 miles suggests something was building up in the carb over time—tiny particles of rust or dirt or old separated gas compounds.

Surging could also be a white spacer mod if everything else is running okay...

The correct method is to disassemble the carb first & only put the metal parts in the Berrymans' solution. Your very lucky if it did no damage to the rubber parts. 8-)

I have a place just outside Trenton, so not too far.  I can give an educated look-see.  However, the Savage is with Aida in Houston, so no side by side...
