Post by SHaW0069 on 04/12/11 at 21:12:07

Hello, I would like to start off by saying this is a freaking amazing website & FORUM!

question is .... i ordered one of these today....

its an air filter cone off ebay, which dz-customs makes....i can't post links on my first post..

i was told there was a breather tube on the carb... is this correct? and if so.. which i seen in other posts.... DO I PUT ANYTHING ON THE END OF IT?
I use the bike to go back and forth to work, and for upnorth trips...

I'm thinking i should put another k&n style filter on that hose too....but do i??  and if i do.... where the heck can i order one? ... or what are the messurements of it..

name brands.... anything would really help... i'm a noob...  :-[

Thanks everyone! i really appreciate your help !  :)

You talking that breather tube that goes from the carb then shoved underneath the gas tank? Nothing should obstruct that one.

I think you're talking about the breather tube that comes off the head, and runs into the filter...
You need to buy a little breather filter for it... You can't block that tube,... it'll ruin your engine.

If you leave it open, it will expose your oil to the elements, and it will throw oil around making a mess...

You need something like this...

Arnold... I can't see it on the fiche... but, it comes off the right side of the head and goes to the air filter via 1/2"(approx) black hose ...
The crankcase breather,.. like what holds your PCV valve in your car...

If I were doing it,... I'd drill a hole in the cone filter shell and run it into the filter where it belongs... No mess, no pollution and most sanitary looking install....
Maybe using something like this to attach...

I'll have to look at that.

Here's EJID's bike... with breather filter...
Like I said,.. I'd run the tube into the air filter, myself.... but, I think the stock filter box looks pretty good... so I left mine on and put a K/N replacement in it...

heres the cone style k&n air filter.

So would you recommend drilling in the cone air filter and making that other hose(breather tube)  hook up in the air filter cone?

or just buy a breather tube cone filter like you posted?

By the way... is that the crank case hose? i thought it was just a hose that sucks air in...

im just learning how to work with bikes, im a noob lol! <----

thanks guys!

I guess there's not much room in that one to connect a hose... unless you went in through the top.
Maybe best to use a separate crankcase filter for that one.

I must have left mine hooked to the stock airbox.

holy crap those are fast replys!! lol
thanks broski's!

is there performance crankcase air filters?

or is that emgo pretty much the best i can get?

i owe you beers!

There's no performance to gain,... it's just to filter any incoming air to the crankcase, and mostly to stop oil from spraying out over your engine...
Choice is purely cosmetic...

Arnold?... so you left the airbox in place when you added the cone filter?...

I like those little covers there too....
Maybe you could turn it into a storage space?...
Keep your lunch in there or some extra tools... ;D...

That is really not a bad idea bot, might have to try that out and bolt my old airbox back to the bike.

Question about the crankcase breather: If the filter is there to keep debris out of the crankcase and oil in the crankcase is it bad when oil comes flowing out of the filter and all over the engine, belt, and rear tire? And what would cause an oil discharge of that nature? (crankcase breather was routed under the tank but above the head.)

Not sure....  Too much oil?...
The blow comes from the piston when it pulls down the cylinder... the air has to release somewhere... but the breather is on the top of the head so that it will release mostly just misty air...
There is a wad of heavy gauge steel wool under the head cover at the base of the vent tube... perhaps that is not in place?....

If you want,... you could try inserting a piece of one of those copper or steel kitchen scrubby sponges into the vent tube... to collect the oil mist and allow it to drop back into the case... but, not so much that it blocks the breathing... just enough to collect mist vapors...

Had the correct amount of oil in it and probably put 500 miles on it since the last oil change. I am in the process of removing the engine for a rebuild so I guess I will soon find out.
