Title: Tire puncture
Post by webbrob on 04/10/11 at 08:58:37

Would any of you recommend replacing a punctured tire? By that I mean not just the tube?

depends on damage

Depends on where the hole is, how big it is, how old the tire is. Removing & reinstalling  a worn tire isnt always real smart.. specially if its on the back.

No visible damage, I haven't found what caused the flat, if it is just a nail then?

So, youre thinking you left whatever poked your tire layin in the road & you went on? If the sidewall isnt messed up & the hole is so tiny you cant find it & the tire is worth removing AND reinstalling, then go fot it,, but ID sure want o lay my eyes on where the hole is in the tire..Have you sprayed it with soapy water? Or have you already got the tube out?

I would try to find where the hole occured in the tire and patch it from the inside. If the hole is big enough it can wear at the tube and nibble through it as you ride. Also if you picked up a thin piece of wire and it is still in the tire it will give you another flat. I've had both happen :(. A lot depends on the age and wear on the tire, if it is a stock IRC with more than 5K miles it should be replaced anyway.

A stock IRC with 3,000 wouldnt get patched at my house. Maybe, if it was the front & in good shape,, but I doubt Id put tht $$$ & or labor into the rear, way too much trouble for such a crappy return.

Find the hole, yes..

How many time did it go flat,....if it did ?
Maybe your neighbor doesn't like your bike.
How loud is your exhaust.  :o

Lastly, there is such a thing as a slow leak that even a tire shop can't find. And I have one here on a trailer that "I" can't find.

Well, I got her off and miraculously found the object:

This is the tread left at about 3500 miles on the clock:

Local shop here quotes on their website, $25 to replace tube alone if you buy from them. Bike Bandit tube price is about 35 bones, so I am thinking the local shop might be a little higher, maybe 70-80 total?

A new tire is at least $130. If I do get a tire what are some good ones? I only found two that are the right size on Bike bandit, but they say they are for tubeless tires...

If you follow the rules... another 1000 miles
$25 to install a 15 or 20 dollar tube.

Dunlop D404 is the least I'd put on it... $80 + shipping
my local would charge $35 to mount.

You'd get about 10k out of it.

40/1000 or 120/10000
$1/25miles or $1/83miles

Looks like a no brainer to me... new tire, keep the old one for an emergency.

BTW... you can use tubeless tires with a tube on our wheels.

Thank you for the info. You say that that is the least you would put on it, what would be better? I just do average riding, nothing out of the ordinary (not a lot of dirt roads or race tracks around...).

And they don't have the 140/80-15, is there many other sizes that fit these babies?

140/90-15 fits fine and tends to correct the speedo error

There are some seriously frugal types here. Some have broken down the whole thot process into the simplest terms. IF yoll be riding 20,000 miles a year, get the most quality tire you can find. If youre gonna ride 2,000 miles a year, the highest quality tire you can buy will be dead from dry rot with tons of expensive tread on it.. SO, Buy the tire YOU need,,
A Dunlop is a darn good tire for someone who plans on 6 to 10 thou a year, IMO. More than that, man, get Metzlers.
