That appendage in front of the engine is the stock shift lever, repurposed to manually operate the decompression valve on start-up and do away with the original solenoid and associated plumbing. View Related Article

I sure like that.

It would be extra cool if, like the old Yamaha SX650, the decompression lever also acted like a start button.

They are sending out some of the parts early and posting great how to links on the news page.

Clip ons with fork lowering spacers should be shipping soon.

I installed my first mod, Supertrapp muffler, last week. Really like it.

Going to pass on the kit muffler.

Hello everybody, longtime lurker, first-time contributer (if i can call this a contribution), my name is on the Ryca list since december.  I bought myself a 2003, 7,400km Savage.  It look so good, It was sad to tear it apart.  Now, its in pieces, I am waiting for the clip-on and the fork lowering kit, meanwhile the motor is going to a speedshop here in montréal for quatruple coronarian bypass ( cylinder bored, wiseco piston, head ported and a valve seat job.
This is a great site.
My main ride is a BMW R1200GS

p.s. sorry for the mistakes, English is not my main language

You can see the rod and I think lever extention at ryca motors.
In operation, step on the lever before starting, and as soon as it's spinning, take your foot off.

Okay, I'm still not a huge cafe racer fan, but after having spent a few minutes on the RYCA site, I could seriously get into building one of these! It looks like it could be a riot to do. Too bad Nessy is destined to be stretched rather than shrunk. Maybe if my tax return is big enough I'll think about looking for a different donor bike just to do this to.  ;D

The latest update from Ryca says they'll be creating an official update thread here.

The latest word is that they'll be offering ungraded shocks and fork springs. The fork springs are beefier, but they didn't specify what the shock upgrade includes. Probably stiffer springs to go along with the stiffer front. The shocks will also be available in all black.

You'll have the choice of receiving your modified tank and Ryca's side covers and seat/tail finish painted (I assume black is the default color) or having them delivered unpainted so you can have them painted the way you want.

They are NOT RECOMMENDING chain conversion because there might be a clearance problem with the rear set controls bracket. The bracket fits between the swingarm pivot and lower loop of the drive belt. Since a chain sprocket would be smaller than the belt pulley, there would be less room for the bracket. Having studied their photo, I think the bottom of the bracket can be notched for clearance and reinforced, so I'm going ahead with the chain conversion.

Thanks for pointing that out! Chain conversion has been on my mind. :)

I am going for the upgraded suspension.

I dont have any tools for the project. Anyone have any suggestions for a good cutting tool? Links and item names would be appreciated.

I was considering a fork brace for my CS1 project bike. Anyone care to share thoughts or ideas on the benefits of a fork brace with a lowered front end and the upgraded stiffer springs?

I love pushing bikes hard in the twisties more than just cruising or going fast. I wont be going all out on this bike, but do plan on having some fun and want the best suspension and handling setup possible.

Thanks!

Don't forget they are putting a rather tall wheel back there.

Yes, like from a stock 23.5" diameter to about 25.5"

So being able to experiment with final drive ratios is especially desirable.

I imagine, since it's lowered, maybe better than a stock savage.
But if you want better, put a fork brace on, can't hurt.
On a stock savage, it's a great big step up.  It's kinda like walking on pipe stacked up on the floor.  Where it's laid up even, no problem.  Where it's uneven, you're walking a tightrope with a stiff cross breeze.

The tire I'm using is 25.4" and it's great with the stock drive belt.

I am in San Antonio, and mainly a cutting tool to complete the fitting of the new bits. I will probably end up buying one.

Any suggestions on cutting tools for the project?

I bought a 4" angle grinder & modified it to accept a 4" cutting disk. Had to hammer the disk shroud flat, because the cutting disks are flat, grinding disks drop a ways. Also had to build a little bushing to fill the gap between the threaded shaft & the cutoff disk. Why did I do all that? Because I couldnt find a tool for cutoff disks that wasnt to expensive.. maybe I looked in the wrong places.. IDK.
I like to put tape on the part to cut & lay it right next to where I want to cut, or, leave it a bit long & grind with a bench grinder. If its a straingt line on a flat piece& you just Cant afford for it to not be right, you can clamp a piece of angle iron on & grind to that.

Post by sbaugz on 02/06/11 at 11:07:22

I don't have a grinder with cutting disc either. I thought I would use my Milwaukee Sawzal with a fine tooth metal cutting blade on it. Should work out just fine. Dremel will clean up edges.

I got a Ryobi angle grinder a few years ago that handles both grinding and cutting disks. The arbor has a slightly raised part the diameter of the disk holes. The nut also has a raised center part. When I used grinding disks, the raised center of the nut goes down. When I use cutting disks, the raised part goes up. No problem.

Of course, the handle can go on either side and the shroud rotates to whatever position I need, or I can remove it. Sometimes it would be nice if the motor and disk could reverse direction so the sparks shoot the preferred direction.

Mite depend on thickness of metal. The sawsall isnt a very gentle tool. You may want to get a piece of metal about the same thickness & see how it acts, or cut a line far enough away from where you want to cut & see if it makes a mess. A grinder for cleaning up is cheap enough. No need for a Makita, just an El Cheepo works fine. I prefer a paddle switch over a sliding switch for a grinder. Harbor Freight or the like is your friend.
OHH, & dont save $$$ by getting grinder disks from HF. Go get a Norton or some other good quality grinder disks. The HF ones spew bits of themselves everywhere at the slightest provocation & youll spend the same $$$ or more because youll be changing them out. Its very unpleasant using HF disks. I think yyoull be unhappy using a dremel for such a project. The cost of materials & the time required to get the job done will pay for the cheapo grinder & disks,

I'm also on the waiting list.

In an earlier post the question was asked about the use of a fork brace. If the bike is going to be riden without the front fender, I think one would be needed.

When you look at the fender you'll see there is a second piece of metal spot welded on the inside. the total thickness then becomes about 1/8". It appears to me that it adds a substantial amount of strength to the forks and prevents (or at least reduces) fork twist.

I purchased the SuperBrace. Not the cheapest thing in the the world at $167 with shipping. But, it's approximately 1/2" thick, generous radius on all surfaces and chrome plated.

Title: Re: Who is getting a RYCA CS-1 kit???
Post by verslagen1 on 02/06/11 at 12:41:49

Every SuperBrace is made of 6061-T6 aircraft aluminum and machined to a tolerance of + or - .002 of an inch, with a polished finish.

http://www.superbrace.com/simulation.html

I don't think it's chrome plated.

I've been thinking about cutting up the fender, leaving just that center section to use as a brace. It might look something very roughly like this:

Either style the flat stock one or the one with the two round bars would be effective and I'd be interested in.  The one with the double round stock  would be better off tubular rather than solid as a weight saving measure.  You are not giving up any significant strength if you go tubular and the unsprung weight savings would be beneficial.

Fit the tire tightly or around stock fender?
How far apart do you want the bars?
Strip of metal in between to be a fender or open?

I would be interested in getting in on this if someone decides to make them. Maybe something that resembles a small fender would be cool. Like this:

Its somewhat functional from a bracing standpoint and it will probably take care of some of the water and dirt spray up as well.

That one looks like it's just a chopped stock fender. Take your Savage fender and hack away.

The old ones almost always arched over the fender, but it doesn't need to be that way.

Last night I imagined a version where the brace bars arched from the front of the forks to the opposite side on the rear side, forming an X.

Here's a chopped stock front fender on a bike we have in the shop...

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Now it just needs some artfully placed holes.

I've been on the list since December.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the Ryca posts, lots of good info being shared.  caseyLA, thanks for the posts from the shop.

I'm waiting not very patiently for my CS-1 kit, ordered in December and just asked for the fork spring upgrade to be sent out with my fork lowering kit and clip-ons.

My donor Savage has lost about 50 lbs of chrome-plated extras, and it's down to just the frame & motor.  I'm cleaning/rebuilding the carb now, and am about to do the frame cuts and remove unneeded tabs, etc.

Any suggestions for what paint to use for touching up the frame after the cuts?  The original frame paint seems like heavy-duty stuff, and I'd like to match it if possible.

Hey RunRun, nice story and I'm excited you have your bike about stripped.  I bet it's a wait getting the kit.  I would think that the black paint would need to be think and something like oil based enamel paint from like a hardware store like that Tractor supply store that's all over the country.  They have some smaller cans of their enamel.
I ordered the Ryca kit last week and will go pick up a local 04 LS650 from a woman.  got it for $1500 with 3900mi.  Guess that's bout good and the test ride on it was ok but that stock seating position and forward pegs was more fun than going to marriage counseling.  Love to see some pics of your work and how scary that stripping process is going to be.  I've found some stuff on the web that hot rodders love for polished aluminum called called ShineSeal.  Seems you buff things up real shiny then use this stuff as a sealer.
Randy   Salute!

I've used VHT Epoxy paint in the past with good results. Got it at the auto parts store. They also have caliper paint that works well. But whatever you use for touchups,  test it on an out of sight spot of the frame or, better yet, on the pieces you cut off. The wrong paint might make the base paint bubble or curdle, or the new paint might run or flake off.

Myself, like you and many many others are in the same situation- waiting for the release of the bike. Just have to be patient. Like yours, mine is torn apart and waiting for parts. I have a bunch of parts at the powder coater right now.

Anyways, I would second using VHT epoxy paint. Otherwise, caliper paint, engine block paint, or even wheel paint would be fine. All can be purchased at the auto parts store.  I would mask off the area and spray it. To be honost, most of the cuts won't even show because of the new engine mount hardware, tank, etc that will block it from being visible. Probably doesn't have to look pretty as long as it inhibits a little rust and hides the bare metal.

Thanks for all the paint suggestions -- the VHT site looks like a great source.

Anyone else thinking about using different instruments, like maybe a Vapor digital dash?  Just thinking out  loud...

I use the  Veypor  on mine.  www.veypor.com

Title: Re: Who is getting a RYCA CS-1 kit???
Post by verslagen1 on 02/16/11 at 08:52:34

the veypor will monitor speed/rpm/gear/fuel level and allow performance monitoring and analysis.

while the vapor will just monitor speed/rpm/temperature.

How does it monitor fuel level?

You tell it when you fill up how much and it knows how far.
It calculates and displays a level.

While rummaging around in this site a came across some info that may be of interest. There was a posting by T Mack-1 in October of 2007 that gave a link to the illustrated parts breakdown for a complete 2001 LS650. Since not much has changed on the bike, I thought it might be interesting to post it again. Especially since many of us are doing engine mods.

http://www.users.fast.net/~tommack/pdf07-ls650-parts-list.pdf

This is a big file, over 5 megabytes. It's 75 pages long in case you want to print it out.

says "file not found" for me but you can get the same parts illustrations for any year from cheapcycleparts.com

In my experience, not all parts are on the microfiche. Or the part will be in the drawing but without a corresponding part ID.

I had a typo...I should have had the letters "pdf" in caps.

Lets try it again....

This seems to work. And, you're right about the cheapcycleparts.com site. Nice break-downs there by year.

I just got the invoice for the spring upgrade I ordered. The spring shortening kit (spacers and damper rod removal-installation tool) and clip-ons are covered by the $99 deposit. The springs are extra. This means they're shipping them out now. Hurray, the first parts are on their way!

Just got my invoice also...took care of business with PayPal. Think I'll go out to the mailbox and see if everything is there yet  :)

it's not like we'll turn into harley riders  ;)  you regular savage folks have the knowledge, plus, in the most important ways, a bike is a bike and a biker is a biker.

i also just got invoiced for my fork kit/springs/clip-ons!  woo hoo -- maybe the bike will be done by spring!

Motobudda, I realize your taking pics as you go. Will you be taking video as well? It would make an interesting video.
I am excited to see this come together. Ok not as excited as all you
guys that are doing the actual build, yet excited to watch it grow..
Thanks for all the updates. Maybe you should leave a goodie for
the mail man.. :) kim

First post here after finding the link on the Ryca updates.  I bought my Savage specifically for a Ryca build and am just awaiting parts.  Front end pieces should be on the way soon I'm told.  One step at a time.  I'll post a link to the photos when I'm allowed.
