Title: Need Advice on car tire
Post by rl153 on 01/20/11 at 13:20:38

I picked up a nail and went to midas to have it plugged .They told me they wouldn't plug it because it was  to close to the edge and I had to get a new tire . Its right on the tread about 1/2 inch from the inside of the rear driver side tire . I got a plug kit and plugged it myself and it's not leaking at all . I just drive this car around town and rarely go on the highay . What do you think,is it safe or not .The tire still has good rubber on it. Thanks!!

1/2" in?...  I think that should be okay...
Midas sucks...

I'd run it.. didn't even know there was a restriction on where you can apply the plug, so long as it's on the tread and not the sidewall.  I have plugged tires all over the tread and never had a problem.  I assume you are using the gummy kind of plugs you double over and stick in w/rubber cement then cut off the excess.

I concur about Midas, they suck big time.  You'd think with their supersafe replace-everything technique, their repairs would hold up.. I'd trust an old mayPop tire fixed with a cheap Autozone plug more than a brand new tire put on by a Midas technician.

Thanks guys,I was leaning that way anyway .I think it will be ok.

I agree, it is ok.
The technician probably has to. tell you that for liability reasons.

sounds like a sales pitch to me, and since you only us it for around type of driving i doubt you would suffer a  "blow out"

Just don't forget to check the pressure in the patched tire a little more often.  Most blowouts are caused by overheated tires causing the rubber to fail.

I had a Toyota Corolla a decade or so ago that had 4 plugs in a single tire since one of the neighbor kids decided to line up 1/4" screws in a nice straight line in the alley.  I never had any issues with it and the car got driven on the highway as well as around town.

I have read that you can't plug steel belted tires they have to be removed and patched from the inside? something to do with air getting between the belts.

The steel belts have been known to scissor those mushroom shaped rubber plugs in half.  That doesn't seem to happen with the monkey-grip type plugs though.

The plug I used was like a 3 or 4 inch rubber strip that you fold in half put in a tool and insert in the hole with some rubber cement on it.I think it was a string repair .

I think because its a motorcycle tire and you only have two that keep you from coming apart in pieces if you have a blow out traveling at high speeds, I'd buy a new one. You can get away with it on a car but I'd always be thinking about the plug when riding. A $100 tire is a lot better deal than losing your life maybe.

I've plug a motorcycle tire and went 3000 miles and never had a problem with it.

We had several plugs in truck tires, no problem.  I would plug car tires too.

Motorcycle tires, I wouldn't like it.  Although, when I had my new bike tire installed last summer, it had a patch on the inside that I knew nothing about.  I got the bike with less than 3000 miles on it, and I had put another 3000 on it when I replaced the tire.  If I had known about the patch, I probably would have replaced it sooner... just to make myself not worry about it.  More of a mental thing.  But it seemed to hold up just fine.

I would not try it on a motorcycle tire either, but must admit, have done it and it held up several thousand miles.  The tire was brand spanking new and picked up a nail (nnNNOOOOOOOOO!) so I was too frustrated to resist.

Having used the same tool on a car tire, I was surprised at how thin and easy to punch through a motorcycle tire is.. surprised the plug had enough to hold on to.  It held fine for 4,000 miles or so.  I would not try that again, unless of course I had done an Oldfeller VW tire conversion.  :D

Really can't remember how many rope/string plugs we used along the gulf coast roads after Ike scattered roofing nails all over the place - never heard of one that failed - the side walls flex too much to get a reasonable seal for very long - better than nothing how ever - depending on the circumstance. I still carry a small air comp and tire plugs in all the 4 wheeled vechls that are likely to be driven in the area.

I have used that type of plug many times before and in one case in the sidewall, every plug held fine until it was time for new tires...

+1 and that little plug doesn't know the difference between a motorcycle tire and a car tire.

Ive only seen a coupla plugs fail. They were on the rear & pulled out till they started to leak a bit due to being left a little long & hard acceleration dragged them out, but it wasnt a catastrophic failure, just a slow leak.
