Here is a pic of my fork protectors before being removed from my 2009 S-40 today..

I used a box knife with a new blade. Cut downward several times in the same area. Then gently use a small pry bar or something and gently place inbetween the area you cut. It should pop right off. Same technique on the other side..

When you get both of them off, your forks should look like this. :)
