Title: well it did run and then I.....
Post by Ben Jones on 11/17/10 at 19:20:25

Tore the motor out to install a head gasket.

Now it just turns over and doesn't fire.

The most i can get is a sputter out of some starting fluid and some back fires.

Sparks there, petcocks good, no air filter on it, stage III carb kit, drag pipe exhaust.

How much affect would a valve adjustment have?

It feels like timing but I know that even my 86 is electronically controlled.

Any Ideas?

There's timing, and then there is TIMING. If the spark comes at the "right" time to an engine with valves out of time it ain't timed. Piston has to be on compression stroke with closed valves to get power stroke. Sounds like you may have put things in out of sync after head was off. Clymers can help, and there is a lot in the Tech secton here. Sorry for your trouble. Hope I'm wrong.

Sounds like the cam isn't timed right.
there's pictures about, look in the tech section for a couple of walk thru's.

with the piston at TDC, the cam has marks in the hub.  they should be horizontal in line with the head.  Or a little raised on the taunt side of the chain.  Also the alignment pin in the gear should be at 1 o'clock.
