Personally I would start with some preventative maintenance like a verslavy conversion and cam chain (if needed). The rest depends on just how crazy you want to get. These bikes are a blank canvas, you can take it as far as you want. Personally I would lose the extra bits like turn signals (I believe my arm is more easily seen than a little flashing bulb.), front fender, horn, reflectors, sissy-bar and fender struts, belt guards, anything slowing you down. K&N filter or cone style filter, white spacer and jets if you have not already, muffler conversion, drag bars. Its really up to you and what style bike you like. good luck and keep us updated as it comes along.   :)

Totally depends on what you want in a bike.
If you need great MPG to cope with the coming $5.00/gallon gas, then keep it running just sipping on the gas. Darn thing looks real nice to me, as is.

Looks good to me. First thing I did was get a real horn at Auto Zone for $15. One bolt, two spade terminals slipped on, five minutes. Harley mufflers are about $25 in new condition. Takes about 45 minutes to put on. Mine is quiet and didn't rejet carb. Make or buy a luggage rack. People on here sell some nice ones made strong. Upgrade headlight, but don't overload elec system trying to look like a firetruck. It doesn't put out a lot of electrons. Raptor petcock some like because of trouble with stock petcock. Go over this forum and look at photo album at front. Then pick out what you feel comfortable doing and/or can afford. As I said, looks good already.

I didn't see a diameter on those bars but make sure you get 1inch bars and not 7/8!

Welllll.. replace risers, mirror mounts, front brake lever, clutch lever, electric pods, whatever else attaches to the handle bars.
OR
Just wrap duct tape around the handle bars where needed until they measure out to 1 inch.
.
In other words, NO, you can't modify them.
Get the RIGHT size handle bars!!!

In my opinion, you're replacing the buckhorns with another set of buckhorns, maybe an inch or 2 higher.  If that's what you want, fine.

What bothered my most about the stock buckhorns was the pullback.  As that forced my elbows in.

Other than that, flanders are good bars.

Nice Bike! I found the same thing with the stock buckhorn bars on my '03 Savage ... 'caused the elbows to tuck in ... always wondered why I seemed to have trouble with some sweep turns ... rode a friends S40 with the straighter drag bar set-up and couldn't believe the difference! So, I then loosend the clamps and rolled my buckhorns ahead which effectively put the slightly higher and further forward, removing elbow tuck ... made all the diff in the world and didn't cost a penny! 8-)

Looks to be in excellent condition. Everything looks like it hasn't aged at all. Almost too nice to be messing with it. I mean look at the carb how new it still looks. And the cylinder and the wheels. It looks like it's just 2 years old, not 25.  What a beautiful old piece. :)

How did you get the carb looking like new?

I think this the first time we have advised someone to leave a Savage like it is. They all look alike, but this one's special. Maybe we could get a class action lawsuit to stop defacing a national treasure....that came from Japan? Naw, that's just crazy talk.
