Title: 25 years today w/o booze. Anyone else?
Post by photojoe on 10/11/10 at 08:39:00

Not looking for any kudos really, would just like to share with my Savage buds that as of today, I have been alcohol free for 25 years. Believe me, I've had more of my share during my younger years. Woke up one morning and just said "no more." Wish I could do the same with cigarettes.

Anyone else here kick the booze? If yes, how long?

first off congratulations to you 25 years WoW that is impressive.
I quit drinking about 25 days ago, I quit smoking one year and one month ago.cigarettes are way harder than booze, just my opinion,
I still crave cigs but not booze, the problem is if I had a drink or two I would definately want a cigarette.
I'm doing it for my kids, they said they would get pissed off at me if I croaked,so here I am with nice sweet breath and no one to kiss. :(

Not a bigger man at all. Got by with a little help from my friends/family. Couldn't do it without them.

Thanks for all of the congrats, and Mick, I'll tell ya, I stopped smoking for 6 months and like a complete fool, started again in March of this year. If anything is going to kill me, the smokes will.

I have quit a few times before, but not for this long, besides I gave my kids my word. And being an English gentleman I keep my word :)
After a quitting session I noticed I smoked more,is that happening to you ?

Just found out my mother-in-law most likely has lung cancer.  Don't know many details yet, but I agree, the smoking is awful.  If this gets confirmed, I believe I will quit with her, and my sister-in-law....

So were you an alcoholic... HAD to have it?  Or did you just decide to not drink anymore?  Just curious, and you don't have to elaborate.

I'm proud to call you a non-drinking friend!   ;)  Congrats!

I personally never really had a problem with alcohol. I am allergic to beer (2 or 3 sips and my throat closes up and I can't breath) and when it took me a week and a half to finish a four pack of wine coolers, I decided I wasn't a drinking man and gave it all up entirely. How long ago that was I have no idea, I know it was more than twenty years ago because I was a teenager at the time and I am 38 now. I too wish it was that easy with cigarettes.

But congrats to you on 25 years of being alcohol free.

In England we call cigarettes 'Fags'

So one may say "If you're going to the shop pick us up 20 fags.."

I'm guessing that might have a different meaning in distant shores... ;D

Good one thumper :)

BH: I was a roadie when I was 18 and partied 6 nights a week. Left for the venues around 1PM, set up the stage, done by 6-7 and had nothing to do but drink free booze until we broke it down, usually done by 3AM. Sleep and do it all over again. On the 7th day I drank because it was my day off ;D The kicker for me came when I didn't remember driving home. Woke up and the car was there, but had no memory of driving it home. Scared the crappers out of me. Had 2 friends die in booze related accidents around the same time...so enough.

Mick: I was out on disability from Late September to March, and didn't smoke that whole time. Went back to work and lasted a few weeks. Driving was the trigger. No excuse. I hate that I'm still smoking. Also stopped once for 2 years, and another time for 6 years. I've heard drug addicts say that it was easier to give up drugs than smokes.

Buried my Dad last year after he lost his battle with lung Cancer, and he stopped smoking 30 years ago. Diagnosed with Lung Cancer 15 years after he quit.

Congrats on the booze-quitting photojoe...

I have quit smoking several times in the last 20 years... but have never smoked much thou... one or two packs a week...

Drinking is different... I can go several weeks without drinking... and then, I can get in a real drinking spree for a few days in a row... go figure...  :-?

Best,

RW

Hugs and a great job. I am a cigaholic. I quit over 2 years ago. I call myself a cigaholic as I know with one puff I could be back smoking that easily. The sheer fact that my Asthma is more controllable now and the price of them, keeps me from taking that puff.

Celebrate each day and feel good that you have the strength to sustain away from taking a drink.. :) kim

Been clean and sober for 14 years now. The hardest thing I ever did was not drinking and drugging, but its the most rewarding thing I've ever done. Life's a lot better now.

See, I understand that perfectly.  Had a few younger years that I drank alot too.  Also had a few times of not remembering parts of my drive home too.  I guess that scared me into not drinking "so much", but I think I really just "grew up".  These days I may only have one beer in a whole week, and that's only if I feel like it.  My hubby drinks a few beers almost every evening, if we have any.  If we don't, its no big deal.  He's not making special trips in the middle of the night to go find something to drink.  I guess I was just curious about that "line".  I'm not trying to advocate drinking, just trying to understand.

We have a young friend (25ish) who drinks often and alot.  I've never been around a true alcoholic, so I worry about the amount that he drinks.  Is it something he will grow out of, or something he will have to make a conscientious effort to change?  I hope something causes him to change soon.

Now Diet Coke is a different story.  I am a Diet-Coke-aholic...  :(

aspartame is more damaging than beer.

I've cut down drinking quite a bit since my youth, but thnakfully, I don't have a problem with it.  I usually have 2 martinis or scotchs with dinner.

I smoked a pipe heavily until July 29th, 2004 at 4:30 PM when I had my onset of angina which led to getting two stents in my left anterior descending artery.

As for lung cancer - there are other causes beyond tobacco.  My mother's family were, or in most cases, still are Appalachian Hillbillies in Southern Ohio.

They are, for the most part, fairly devout Mormons ( although I'm not - I'm Catholic ).  That means they don't drink or smoke.

Two of my mother's sisters died of lung cancer - they didn't ever smoke, their husbands didn't; they were never around even second hand smoke.  Sure, smokers have a greatly incresaed risk of lung cancer, but it isn't the only cause.

Thanks, but everything I've read about aspartame says the controversy is bogus.  It is one of the most tested substances and has been found to be safe as it is currently being used.

Granted, I'm not going to get YOU to believe that, but I do.

Baby -

I'm with you.  Back 20 years ago my mother in law started telling me a bogus story about "6,000 airline pilots who were suing over brain damage from Equal".

Well, I asked her that since my law practice is about 90% aviation related, since I'm a licensed commercial pilot myself, don't you think I'd have heard about such a lawsuit?

She had no reply, and there never was any such class action case.  Aspartame has been around for a LONG time.

I work as security for a Coca cola bottling plant, and it makes you think when a truck pulls in with hazmat signs all over it and what they are hauling is actual ingredients for coke.

Hey, thanks for all of the replies, and good to know that there are a few others here that are able to celebrate their life without the booze. Turning 50 a few months ago made me think of what my life would've been like had I kept going. Gotta stop these smokes, thinking about hypnosis. Sad that with the budget cuts, they killed all of the free NJ stop smoking classes. Won't hurt me to pony up the cash though, since the price of smokes cost more than paying off a new car every month.

Jerry I read this yestarday on yahoo news,"implanting a device called a stent in neck arteries is more likely to cause a stroke or death than surgically removing life-threatening blockages.US researchers said on monday". You might want to have a word with your Doctor, see what he says.

I think we have the Silver years to look forward to,and then we go into what is called our Dottage,if we live long enough.
Reminds me of the two buddies at the rest home ,they grabbed there walkers and struggled down to the dining room ,they stood at the entrance looking for a table, and bill was noticing just about every one was hacking and coughing with fluids leeking from every orafice, and Bill said to his pal ,  "do you know Jim if we had been heavy drinkers and heavy smokers and generally abused our bodies,we would have missed all this.
