That's great news ,can he play atall ?  It is a very difficult instrament to play ,if he masters a violin he can play anything. I personaly wish him all the luck in the world,it is my favorite instrament,David Garrett is my favorite violinest.
I have a spare copy of a Concert he gave in Berlin ,called of all things
David Garrett "Live in Berlin"  he mixes classical with rock and roll,
If you like any music at all you will love this guy, If you would like it just pm me your address I will get in the mail to you .
No charge or return, let me know.

thanks mick

he can't play at all - has his first lesson next week!  I guess like any parent I fantasize about him being amazingly good at it!

I would love for him to get good enough to really enjoy it and have the experience of learning a difficult instrument.  I can't play any strings, but I love to listen to them - from symphony orchestra to classical guitar, to Charlie Daniels!

Then i'll get my younger son a cello and they can play duets for me like Aubrey & Maturin   :D

I played viola for years when I was young. Loved it until I joined the HS orchestra and HAD to practise. Id play for hours on end just to play and then as soon as I HAD to i said screw it. Go figure. Dont push. Let him enjoy and learn at his pace. You'll be hearing a lot of "can-can" and "hot cross buns" for the first 6 months or so but after he gets comfortable enough to play his own tunes you'll enjoy it.

Whatever sounds that come while the kid learns even the finger nails on the chalk board notes are likely a little easier on the ears than a .45 tommy gun - dang those things are some kind of loud

I hope he enjoys it.  There's something cool about being able to make music, even if it's not fancy.
I've thought about trying to learn to play a tune on a fiddle (or violin).  I can play guitar poorly, but enough to keep myself entertained.  I can kill an afternoon just sitting in the living room playing my way through a stack of music.  Been a while though, my fingers need toughening up. ;D
