Title: Tank paint
Post by klx650sm2002 on 08/07/10 at 09:30:23

I'm looking for ideas for tank paint, do any of you have pics of your own tank or others that you like please post them. These are two that I have found, one here and one on the net. It would be nice to see other peoples ideas.

I saw one last year that had false seams and rivets like an airplane fuselage. Can't seem to find it back now though. Pretty cool theme though. Let us know what you finally decide on!

Clive, have you ever seen a Savage in a Trials look ? seems to me it would be a perfect engine, wheel base a tad long, and the foot rests way to far forward.
I remember the old BSA 500 thumper ( M21 ) I think,was a great trials bike,lots and lots of tourque.

This might be a different example of Tank Paint.

The only color they would let us use on tanks was olive drab with a white star.

Love the flat army olive look on a Bobbed Bike! The LS650's tank would look awesome painted that color ... esp. set off with WW2 style nose art decals or the shark grin motif from the P-40's of the Flying Tigers ... that would be wicked!

That Harley-esque orange with black/white flat-tracker styled tank logo is very cool too!

Interesting belt and side covers buttgoat1. What did you use on the chrome?

used a DA sander with medium grit till I got to brass then
painted with rustoleum textured paint.  I did use some fiberglass when i got some deeper gouges, i got impatient and hit it lightly (noot enough) with the angle grinder, live and learn......

the stock belt cover hole was glassed in and then cut out in the new pattern

Very nice, buttgoat1, your hard work shows up in the details! The problem with all the decals as I can attest on my own bike is getting them to lay down right on the curved surfaces, and some fade out much worse than others. Clive's find looks good, but takes a lot of trimming to lay down as seen on the top of the tank. I still can't find the tank I was talking about, but this one, complete with nose art comes close. http://www.flickr.com/photos/modern_artifacts/539700087/
I've been looking for a simple stallion head similar to what you see on the sides of custom horse trailers to replace my eagles somewhere down the line. Whatever you choose, you're already well on your way putting your own signature on it. Be sure to update us with pics when you decide. Savages are just plain beautiful aren't they???    8-)

my centurian tank was a nice drab olive green, painted silver inside, but we did have a nice chrome tea pot.
stats; 60 tons wet,120 gallons onboard, with another 120 gals on a self ejecting mono trailer, 3 gals to the mile on roads and 5 gals to the mile cross country.60 rounds of 20 pounder,5000 rounds browning machine gun.12 smoke bombs, plus personel weapons, revolvers for the driver (me) and commander sten guns for gunner and raidio op.
not the tank you mean I guess.

I too, like the nose art style on bikes.
A nice pinup would be good too, Bettie is named after Bettie Page afterall.

Here's mine. did the flames with flat black rattle can. i'm a novice at painting. masked it off with a roll of electrical tape that i cut in half long ways to do the curves. looks awesome and was super easy. took a little while, but i'm meticulous.

I really like the orange, white and black harley-esque theme. I was also thinking of doing the shark nose art the next time i paint it. There are some great ideas here! keep them coming!

REX's current paint scheme:  basic black rhino bed lining type spray, very utilitarian
