Dropped a valve and trashed the cylinder head / piston on my 1987. Got a used 2006 motor from Pinwall, Ohio and it fit in the frame without any modifications. As the motor was sold with out a carb or starter I used the 87 parts. No problem. Started the engine and it idled fine. More throttle resulted in massive backfire. Seems like the 06 has less ignition advance then the 87, controlled by the CDI.

Most would say get a 2006 CDI and rewire it to fit the 87 harness. I tried something else.
Removed left hand motor cover / stator assy and rotor (You will need a special Suzuki fly wheel puller, not cheap) and replaced them with the 87 parts. Fired her up, still with the 87 CDI and it worked! The motor runs like a dream at all revs.
Why buy a fly wheel puller instead of a new CDI?
I all ready had the puller since changing the starter driven gear last year.

The cheapest I have seen is from Amazon.com for $55.-.
Standard Suzuki price is well over $100.-.

Just read this and I'm wondering if that would work for me. I have an 86 but I swapped in an engine from an 05 and I get the same thing runs fine till I give it throttle past 1/4 then it starts bogging out and no matter what I do to the carb it still does it.

Would I just need to swap out the flywheel? Or both flywheel and stator?

Just the rotor. On it is a feature that controls the timing.
