Very available July 24-25

Also, July 24, the Gateway Riders are having a Saturday evening ride:

Saturday evening ride to the Dar-E-Kreme, a neat old diner off Hwy. 30 and BB for food, malts, and ice cream.

Meet 6:30, leave 7:00 PM from the BP/McStop on Long Road & Chesterfield Airport Road.

Or maybe a meet around one of the lakes for a day ride. Ha Ha Tonka, Warsaw, somewhere central for most/all riders.

Farthest extremes here appear to be Springfield to St. Louis. Nearest !/2 way lake (favoring Springfield a bit) would be around Osage Beach. Discounting lakes, the halfway point down Hwy 44 would be Rolla, Mo.(apx 100 miles both directions) Plenty of nice rides around Hwy 8, 19 and 185 south between Rolla and Sullivan in that direction. Just throwing possibilities out there! I work retail so I don't get many weekends off. I'm available 7/25, 8/14 & 8/15 or 8/22. Don't let my schedule stop anyone else, thats why I ride alone so much - times don't match up often. On the other hand, I get the road to myself many weekdays!
Osage beach is on the outskirts of my travel so I'm not that familiar with the area, but I could find out. I can be of SOME help around the Cuba to Potosi to Rolla ride as its a popular triangle for poker runs. drharveys might have some ideas from his BMW trips also?
Any other MoRiders want to chime in and try this?

You like hills n curves theres some good ones around LOZ.(Ha Ha Tonka side anyway).
Lot of nice lil spots S/SE of cuba and rolla.
Elephant Rocks, Johnson Shutins(have'nt been down there since the D@m failure) clearwater lake, wappapello lake, all kinds of springs.
Person grab a MDC map of all the MDC areas, parks, springs, mills ect they could stay busy all summer and still not see them all...lol

Southpaw, im kinda flexible on my rideing time as im Mr Mom. 24 hours notice and im about good for a ride. Been rideing alone myself though ive taken the girl on a few short rides. But mostly i Lone Wolf it...lol
Just got back to rideing myself about 2 months ago after a hiatus of about 27 years.(promise to stay off bikes to dad till the kids were grown/older...lol) Put about 2500 miles on in the last 2 months and still havent got to ride enough to suit myself...lol

Let's see, there's Missouri Hicks Barbeque in Cuba, always worth a trip, and not hard to find nice roads to get there on.

There's lots of great places for an all-day ride, closer in to town there's some great roads around Highway 94 through the wine country between Hermann, Washington and St. Charles County.

Here's 94 dropping back down from the bluffs:

Ha Ha Tonka is always worth a trip:

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Lake%20Ozark/DSC00352.jpg

although getting to and from the lake is a really long ride on a thumper, especially if you try to avoid the slab.

I live in Columbia.  I would be up for a ride but my days off are random and usually not on weekends (retail).

Anyone going to the National Bikers Rally at the Columbia fairgrounds August 3-8th maybe I'll see you there!!!

So that's what was going on when we drove through there a couple of days ago!  Lots of electric "Motorcycle Awareness" signs along I-70!

I was noticeing there was a LOT of events comeing up in the MO Ruralist Magazine this month.
Swap meets, music festivals, bar-b-q's, car shows ect.

With this heat lately ive been thinking a ride up to the lake and a swim beach would be good. Might see some Bikinis...rofl

I'm going to Roctoberfest Bike Rally in Columbia, Mo at the end of September. It is at the Expo Center in Columbia. http://www.columbiaroctoberfest.com/index.html
I would love to see more Savage's/S40's there this year.

If you fellow Mo riders aren't doing anything on August 28th. The Bikers Against Child Abuse chapter I belong to is having a poker run in Montgomery City. The route is approximately 110 miles through Montgomery and Calloway counties. I can email fliers to anyone that is interested.

Hey Wolfman

The kids will be going to school in a few weeks and I should have a few weekday "weekends" with no emergency "honeydo's" coming up. Maybe we can catch a dayride somewhere along the 44 corridor.

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by Wolfman on 08/08/10 at 00:08:27

Sounds good. Id like to do a day ride around the lakes or maybe a run down old 66.
Today was beautiful for a ride...and i couldnt go.
Acid reflux kicked up so bad this morning i was sick as a dog all day. Killed me seeing folks out rideing and i was dinking around the yard. Maybe tomorrow.

I rode my first bike in ya'lls neighborhood, a Suzuki 150 twin 2 stroker, while at Parks College back in '67-'69.
It was a tough little bike, took all kinds of abuse.
I stayed mostly on the east side of the river and buzzed the back roads out that way.  Had a blast.

Then the Army called and sent me on an all expense paid vacation to beautiful southeast Asia.   ;D

Post by WebsterMark on 08/08/10 at 06:39:02

Lancer; the area around Park's College is a little different now than then.... You'd need a bunch of one dollar bills....

Wolf; Southpaw, send me a note if you meet up. I might be able to meet. What I'd like to do is take a camping/fishing trip with my bike around Jacks Fork / Current River.

Im Mr Mom so with a lil advance notice i can usualy get away about any day for a few hours barring Doctor visits.
Takeing care of mom(stroke) and the youngest is my daily penance.
My ride is my 'escape from reality' you might say.
10 years home care for dad(strokes) then the father in law for a year and now mom for the last year has kinda wrung me out a bit mentaly and physicaly.

I like to explore to. Toss a map in the bag, turn on the gps and just pick a direction and take off till im ready to head home. Maps only for picking a way home, not where to go...lol
Just kinda like to live 'in the moment' for awhile and forget everything else for a bit.
Could probably do an overnighter on a weekend, maybe even during the week depending on whats scheduled.

Id LOVE to just take off and just head west or south for a day then come back the next day.
This fall is a definite lake run when the leaves are changeing.

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by Wolfman on 08/09/10 at 01:03:24

Cripes it was hot today, almost to hot to ride. Even cranking along at 60 on the backroads that air was warm n muggy.
Did about 70 miles and said enough and headed back for the AC...lol
Id of been smart id of taken a pair of shorts and jumped in one of the rivers i stopped at.

Did'nt see but 3 other bikes and they were runing down old 66. Black helmets, black bikes and black leather jackets. He!! i was cooking in a light denim jacket. Would'nt even of considered rideing in my leather today.
It was 96 at 11 am and its still 82 at 3 in the morning.
Had a case of the red arse by the time i got home. Wheres the baby powder...lol
Supposed to be in the mid to upper 90s all week and heat advisory untill at least wed or thur. :(

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by Southpaw on 08/09/10 at 09:25:56

Parlayed two midweek "weekends" into a seven day vacation due to slow work levels, now going back Wednesday. Only been out riding one evening. Just too hot and humid for my asthma.  :P

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by Wolfman on 08/09/10 at 12:29:29

Heats why most of my rideing lately has been of an evening after about 7 or so. Need to rig me a lightbar.
Dosent seem like many have been rideing here localy unless it gets down to about the mid 80s. Except for the odd bagger on the hwy.
Id of figured to see more on their way to sturgis. Usualy its a non-stop rumble and parade of harleys about now.
Ive seen about as many on trailers as ive seen actualy being ridden. ::)

Ive had to haul mine once after the blowout the other day and that just irked the he!! out of me. My bikes to be ridden, not hauled.

Mid to upper 90s the rest of the week with heat advisories. >:(

Addenum: CRPIES its hot!! Says 97 in springfield but MY outside thermometer says 104! Mine averages 2-3 degrees higher then theirs but the heat index is 105 at least according to them.
Wonder if i could mount AC on my ride? :-/ :D

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by Wolfman on 08/10/10 at 01:39:02

Southpaw, you or any of the others ride today?
Man it was HOT today. My thermometer hit 101 and stayed there from about 1 to 4. Still 80 at 3 am(yeah im a nightowl).
Supposed to hit 99 tomorrow, 100 wed and 101 thur then back to 98...lol
Temps are 'supposed' to drop 10-15 degrees this weekend though.
Gardens about toast and i about overdid it trying to keep it alive. Had my head under the cold water faucet for almost an hour to cool off.
Did get a short ride in about 10 and the temp was'nt to bad. Got me a couple of them Kool-Breeze personal body coolers at wally world. Should help a lil. ::)

I went for a ride last night. I'm glad that I rode the grocery getter (Burgman) in stead of the coup (S40). The bugs were so bad that after about 45 miles, I had to stop and clean the windshield off.

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by WebsterMark on 08/10/10 at 06:16:47

I went out in St. Louis last night around 9 PM to see if I finally got rid of the headlight rattle (yea, it's gone) and it was still muggy.

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by Southpaw on 08/10/10 at 10:19:57

Wolfman
I'm getting out for short runs but the heat just isn't worth the hassle right now. It's the only time of the year I carry my Ibuterol 24/7! THIS is what really drove me out of construction. I guess I knew before it started showing up on my production stats that I was losing a step. This was the time of year we were all hurrying to get the schools done before the kids came back. I was doing 60 hours a week up on the rooftop units behind the pipefitters through the end of August! I wouldn't last a week trying to do that now!  :o

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by Wolfman on 08/10/10 at 14:07:42

Hayfields when i was young and then Roofing, among others things later on was FUN in this type of heat...lol
At least brushhogging the farm i had a light breeze as i mowed at 5 mph. ::)
3 hours in the garden yesterday like to of killed me. Old age sucks! :o

12Bravo, i carry an eyeglass cleaner kit from wal-mart in my jacket for a good visor cleaning. Bandana in my left front pocket to remove the 'squishies' on the fly. Bugs were'nt to bad here last night. Guess most were at the Pool...lol

WBM, i got to redo my fricken speedo again. Its starting that annoying lil rattle again. Weatherstripping seems to be holding up well in my headlight though.
45 miles to the grocery store? You make a wrong turn or the bike just kind of wandered off of its own accord?...lol

ACK! Just looked at my outside thermometer. 105!

Did a lil search and came up with these puppies. First 3 sites are about the cheapest.
Electric cooling vests looks like it will run you about 3 bills. Yech!
Check out the andiamo padded skins n briefs at the mm411 site too.

Several sports companies like Aesics, New Balance Russel and Nike have versions of the dri-more wicking mesh t-shirts that I use. Not partial to brands, I usually buy whats available cheapest locally. They really work well while riding but like all Ts, probably don't offer too much protection if you go down.

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by Wolfman on 08/11/10 at 01:14:54

I think i may try one of the vests. And it will be UNDER my jacket. This boy dont ride without . Ive hit the pavement at 70 mph(driver side door popped open on the old truck i drove. Yes 'I' was driveing...lol)
I dont even ride the quad on the road to the front of the farm without a jacket. Road rash sucks MAJORLY. Sweat will dry.

They reccomend useing a mesh jacket but right now all ive got it a denim jacket and leather jacket. I will eventualy get a mesh, after i get a modular helmet...lol

Those Kool-Breeze neck wraps do work pretty good though, tried one today. Kinda weeps down your back a tiny bit which helps and cools your blood as it runs through your neck.
Walking around the yard in 101 degree heat they dont help a lot, but on the bike it makes a differance.
I think those vests from the first site ought to work pretty decent.
That or i may break out the needle and thread and make one myself with pockets for those lil frozen lunchbox packets from wally world. ;)
Heat warning is extended through the end of the week now.
Looks like you folks on the east side may get some rain and temps will be lower.
Me and the gardens are cooking here! :(

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by drharveys on 08/12/10 at 18:26:06

Mrs. Doc has been really sensitive to the heat of late.  We've tried the evaporative vests, but they don't work that well in our 90+% humidity.

I ended up with this system:

http://www.veskimo.com/servlet/StoreFront

The small "ice chest" fits into the tail bag on our Triumph.  With block ice it's good for over 2 hours, and when you refill it with ice cubes from your lunch stop, it's good for a bit over an hour.

It runs off the bike's 12 volt, or you can use a battery pack for bicycles or walking the dog.

It's pricey, but not as bad as some of the industrial vests in the previous post.

You should wear a jacket over it -- the insulation keeps your vest from cooling the great outdoors.  We'll use a fleece vest over the cooling vest and under a vented jacket.

The less material between your skin and the vest, the better.  Mrs Doc uses a jogging bra.  I guess the fashion model trick of putting band-aids over the nipples would work, but it makes it a bit awkward at a lunch stop.   ;D

Title: Re: MO Riders
Post by Wolfman on 08/13/10 at 04:01:49

With the amount or lack of material used in swimsuits and halter tops these days a jogging bra is almost consided over dressing. I would'nt worry about bandaids, id just let them headlights shine...lol

I wore one of the neck wraps the other day, heat was about 101, humidity was high as it has been lately. I did'nt pat the wrap as dry as they reccomended. Wore it with my denim jacket(light as ill ride) and between the cooling effect and the slight dribble down my back i was quite comfortable....as long as i was moveing.
Forgot it today on a quick run and like to of burned up.
But im a lil extra sensitive to the heat lately after i overdid it in the garden a few days ago.
It dont rain soon im going to have to let most of one garden go, lose all my corn. Topsoil has absolutely no moisture at all. Baked to dust.

Got some material left over from a turkey vest i made awhile back. Thinking of makeing another with about 4 pockets on the front and two over the kidneys on the back. Put them lil frozen 4x6 lunchbox freezer packs in them.

Great, they just extended the heat advisories into the weekend now. Been over a 100 here for the last 5 days with miserable humidity.

I played golf yesterday in Memphis. I drank water on everyhole. Never once made a trip to the trees........ wow...it was freaking hot. could not keep the sweat from dripping in my eyes.
It's been hotter in Memphis than St. Louis, but not by much.

WBM, GOLF????
You aint one of these that wears them funny knee length checker pants with the flat topped floppy lil hat with a fuzzy ball on top do you???...lol

Used to play a round or two myself till i screwed my back up. Between my back ribs n shoulders i pretty much had to give up golf, Tennis, bowling, softball n baseball.
Ole Tiger dont pull his head out of his arse he's a going to have to give up golf to. Did'nt do so well in his last tourney. Something like 18 over par...lol

With this heat i kinda felt like the wicked witch of the west from OZ last light.
"Im melting, IM MELTIINNNGGGG!" ;D
