Title: optimum engine temp questions Post by texsam on 07/04/10 at 17:00:42 I was wonering what temp should my suzi be at operating temp when i check it at the colling fins it registers 240 farenheight is that to high??????? what do u guys get?? i am not sure bout oil temp the difference it variations between the 2.is 240 at the fins to high buy the crank case it says 25 lowere but i need some advice am i overheating or runnin to high??? |

Or is that after running it at regular speeds & shutting off then checking? How certain are you of the thermometers accuracy? Have you checked the temp of water when it starts to boil? |

Suzuki designed it to be air-cooled and put the fins it needed to work best... You really can't do anything much about it anyway... If it overheats, from too much, stop n' go traffic, it'll let you know by getting all stumbly and then it'll die... That's a signal to let it cool off... Stop and have a soda.... Mine does pretty fine in 100+ Arizona heat... Checking temps on an air-cooled bike, is just gonna' make you a nervous wreck... you can't add a bigger radiator or use water wetter, or a stronger fan... ... best you're gonna' do is blow on it... :-?... Mind your lips if you try that one... ;D... Sorry, if I'm being too sarcastic,... just saying, don't worry... It's a well designed engine. |

Title: Re: optimum engine temp questions Post by Oldfeller on 07/04/10 at 23:48:52 All this worrying about "temperature" is pointless, change your oil to a good synthetic and then only worry about it when things get over 350 degrees (your legs will cook to medium well in the normal riding position). Oil failure can possibly kill your engine, yes, it is theoretically possible. If you are worried about this failure mode then consider dino oils fail at MUCH lower temperatures than synthetics do. Oil coolers were put on bikes simply to cater to dino oils -- simply get out of that mode completely rather than spend big bucks to modify your bike unnecessarily -- change to a full synthetic oil. |

If it were not for coolant, and under pressure, water would boil out in a heartbeat. Even a water cooled engine is not overheated at 240, as long as the water (coolant) stays in it. And remember, the warmer an engine runs, (to a point) the less ring and cyl wall wear there will be, not to speak of running more fuel efficient and more hp. Actually the bigger difference in temp between the engine, and the air going into it, the more efficient it runs,.....and that not speaking about humid air being that much better yet. |

On it, I regularly see water cooled cars and bikes pulled over,... overheated... While my Savage doesn't even know it's climbing... The only time I worry about overheating,... is, summertime, in traffic, caught at a light, with some kind of hold up, like a minor accident holding things up... then,... it'll be me in distress, more than the bike... :P... |

Title: Re: optimum engine temp questions Post by Serowbot on 07/05/10 at 14:46:41 It means nothing,... 5 min. at a traffic light can do it,... one experience with a faulty petcock,.. or one ride up a mountain... ... and you can't jet a bike properly by reading pipe color... lean or rich will blue a pipe the same... among many other things... To me,... taking the blue off a pipe, is like refinishing a vintage Les Paul... or cleaning the patina off fine silver...
