Title: How serious is this:  rear wheel squeak
Post by Tiefighterpilot on 07/04/10 at 14:04:58

I just noticed that my rear wheel squeaks on low speed.  I checked the alignment, and it looks right.  Belt is tight.  It is not perfectly center however.

Anyone know what may be causing this and how serious this is?  I am concerned that this is symptomatic of something serious.

Thanks.

I swipe a block of canning wax back & forth on mine some. If that doesnt eliminate or change the noise, look somewhere else.

Lubes only hide the cause.

I've re-aligned 3 bikes with a squeak and have come up with a simple method.

lift the rear tire, bike in neutral
spin the tire by hand forwards
if the tire tracks to one side, tighten the belt adjuster on that side.
repeat spinning the tire backwards.
check belt tension, should be able to twist the belt 90°

if this doesn't cure the squeak, lube the rubber dampers next tire change if you can wait that long.  Also, check the belt pulley bearing, lube it too.

Thanks for your instruction.  I will do this. What do you mean twist? like when the belt is pulled by hand it should twist?  mine is so tight, it does not twist at all.

Then your belt is way too tight.  Search belt tension and read up a bit, you should be able to rotate your belt some by simple finger pressure.

grab the belt on the bottom about midway
and twist it with your hand
should be able to twist it 90°
compared to the belt tensioner it will be loose
loose is how we like it.
and if yours is real tight, could be whats making it squeak.

Lube will hide the problem, but it will also find it. If lube kills or changes the noise, ya found the noise. If not look elsewhere.

The squeak is your belt telling you that it wants to be a chain.

where do I find the instructions on how to lube the belt pulley bearing?
I hope i don't have to take the whole thing apart...

I also noticed that my rear wheel pully is slightly loose.  I assume it should not have any play.  My bike only has 2000 miles.  Is it normal to have stuff come loose?

Take the wheel hub assembly apart and get all the dust out of it and you will understand it much better.

The bearing is a sealed ball bearing, if it rolls freely and quietly it is fine.

Your wheel hub free motion is typical -- don't sweat it.

You are simply running too much belt tension and need to ease off on it.

how tight should the nuts be that holds the rear wheel to frame?  Can it be too tight?

Clymers says 40 to 63 lbs...

I go about 80lbs,... don't want that fallin' off...

...If you snap the axle bolt, or throw out your back... That's too tight...:-?...
