Wow!  I know that most of the modders on this site are into bobbers, but to my eyes, that is one of the most beautiful bikes that I have seen on this site, or any other site.  Like Serowbot, I would be very appreciative if you could provide more information and pictures (both sides) on the rearsets.  You have really produced a headturning bike, and one that I would love to ride.

I agree, BUT how often do you really plan on riding this bike? With how much work went into it and the $$$ that I'm sure you have invested will it be a daily rider, a show bike, or something in between?
I think many of the "handyman bikes" aka bobbers that have been done on this site are by people that do them as low budget modifications to make the bike how they want them so they can continue to ride them on a daily basis and only a handful of them are done with similar amounts of $$$ with plans of only riding them occasionally or entering them in bike shows?

Just my $.02 I really do like how the bike turned out.

this is AWESOME!!!!!   should make this into a kit and sell it!!

did you have to cut the frame or weld anything??  cause that's what stops me from trying any "serious" mods, that and I need to find a deal on a savage to build from.  and some real income to finance the whole thing . . .   anyway, GREAT BUILD!!!     :D

Post by caseyLA on 05/13/10 at 02:12:22

Thank you for all the positive comments! I will get some details and more pics of the rearset brackets for those who are interested.

james may: the rear rim is an 18 x 2.15 aluminum Akront rim. They have a low shoulder and are polished, so matches the front stock rim nicely. The lacing and trueing of the wheel was done at Buchanan's in Azusa, CA.

A little more about the bike:
I wanted to create a thumper that was lightweight, reliable, and fuel efficient for urban commuting. Something with a classic british flavor made from new parts. I was originally planning on putting a Savage engine into a cafe racer frame, but after I got my S40 and starting really looking at it, I discovered the stock chassis is the perfect home for the kick-ass engine. Skinny frame for a skinny engine...perfect. Swingarm goes on the OUTSIDE of the frame...BRILLIANT! The streamlined chassis really makes it look lean and mean. Tilt it forward a bit and the rake and trail are in line with a modern Bonneville, and it only weighs 320 wet.

All the components were designed to avoid any major mods to the frame or engine, and as many stock components as possible were used. Everything is bolt-on....there was no welding to the frame.

And yes, it will be ridden. A lot! Super fun to ride.  :)

Yes, I did have to cut the seat tubes and a few other bits. But there was no welding (and therefore, no re-painting!) of the stock frame. There's a few things I learned along the way to make the next one much easier to build. This was a big experiment.  ;)

Yes, I designed and made the seat and side covers out of fiberglass. The molds can be used to make the next bike (after some vacation time...lol).

All of the fabrication was done out of my shop in Los Angeles (Ryca Motors). We'll be launching our website next week with some more info about our work.

Here's a picture of the rearset bracket, although it's difficult to see with all the other parts on the bike. The bracket is one-piece, each side connected horizontally with tubing for a very rigid structure, and mounted at the engine mounting points. It's designed to be used with Tarozzi rearsets, and doubles as the exhaust support bracket. The design also re-locates the stock rear brake switch, keeping everything functional.

Now, I wonder if the wife will let me do that to hers..... ::)

You mention your shop in LA.  Does that mean that it would be possible to order a set of brackets and rearsets from you?  I for one, would be very interested in such a package.

Yeah, I can reproduce all the components, including the rearset assembly. My original plan was to build a second and possibly third complete bike based on this prototype and offer them for sale. I was just kinda waiting to see the response and guage if there was any interest. Since everything is bolt-on, there could be a kit as well.

We're going to work out the price list and get our website up next week. But until then, I will take some better pics of the rearset bracket and hardware.

Would you want them bare metal, powder coated, or painted?

Yeah the tach seems to be fairly accurate.

The wheel base is *slightly* shorter than stock due to the shortening of the front forks. But there were no mods to the frame or swingarm that effected wheel base.

Thanks for the question.

Beautiful. I am eating my words, I have said savage lends itself to being a chopper and/or a bobber. Not cafe ... sadly I am very mistaken.

I like the footpeg carriers, seat, side covers etc etc, but would like to retain FE and tank - where the $ is I think.
In your build process you ever happen to get a pic of that stage ? Or maybe you never went to that stage, you could ahve modded the front first.
Very good work.
Cool.

You could theoretically use the stock tank and not lower the front forks. I never tried it. I chopped the tank, then created the seat and side panels, then lowered the front to make things level.

First post!  :D  Great job on the bike!

Can't remember how or where I came across your bike (this CS-1) on the internet, but this appears to be exactly what I'm looking for.  So my research lead me to this forum.

I currently own an 04 Yamaha FZ6 (my first street bike, bought new, now with over 11k fun filled miles) and have decided to (hopefully) replace it with a 2011+ Triumph Daytona 675 some day.

But I still desire a simply built, modifiable, air cooled, minimalistic (thumper), very light weight, easy to work on, cafe racer-style bike.  Until now I couldn't find a potential platform that was appealing.

I'm still in the research and planning stage.  So unless I come across info that suggests otherwise, I'll most likely find a used 2002+ S40 and do the mods myself using your parts/kit.  I'll probably be in touch.  :)

Casey, I have always appreciated understated improvement on any vehicle. Like when you get a good haircut--it doesn't look like it's been cut. THIS is GREAT! It flows so smoothly that you aren't going to get the credit you deserve. You made it look easy. As one who hates the big solid chrome customs, this one is balanced perfectly for me. Guys, we had to start taking pre-orders for the kits since our article in Cycle World magazine came out this past weekend. It's a refundable $99 pre-order that gets your name on the list. Complete kits include everything you need to build the cafe racer. Full details are on the website: www.rycamotors.com

Really wish you could swap on 17" wheels so you could use some decent tires.  Other than that, looks great and I love the idea of light weight, simple bike.

I dunno, depending on what fit, maybe Metzeler Sportec M3s or Michelin Pilot Powers.

I don't see actual measurements for these tires, but if they are less than 25.5" and 150 as max width, they might fit with a little finess.
130/90-16's fit fine, a 150/60 or 70-17 may fit.  But I don't think you'll get max use of the increadible lean angles.

I saw that on the shelf and had to buy the mag; got excited over seeing the article up front on the first page other than ads.
Congrat's ....what great news !
This should give the Savage/S40 reputation a nice boost

So you are getting a significant response from this ?   heavy response ?

Hello, new to the board.  I also posted this in Caseys other post, but this bike satin black with white-walls, I think, would look awesome.
