Post by skittels natas on 03/01/10 at 15:39:13

ok I am helping a friend work on their savage and well after doing a break flush we went for a ride got a few hundred feet then he stalled when we tracked the prob it was not nuff air in the mix so we go to pull the air filter and the box was full of fuel we drain it remove the wet air filter and start the bike and i watch it while running slowly trickle aerated gas into the air box

any one have any ideas

Check the oil for gas

You might wonder why I say look in the oil tank for gas when it's in the air box.  If the diaphram in the petcock has developed a leak.  It will pour into the intake thru the vac line.  Then it can either go into the air box or the engine.  Sooner or later in to the crankcase.

So check the vac line, should be dry.

Then check the float valve.  they sometimes get stuck.  give the side of the carb a rap with the plastic handle of a screwdriver.

should have said carbs recently rebuilt they arnt sticking but the petcock could very well be shot but it is doing this while running
the fuel is back flowing while engine is on
and may be doing so while sitting still as well

thanks for the insight

any other ideas folks

put the petcock on prime
disconnect the vac line and plug both ends
if you still have the problem then not petcock.
turn petcock to on when you want it off.
