What tank is that second pic off of?  How much modification did that fit require?

Thank you.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Truckinduc on 01/28/10 at 19:06:45

honda cm 400.  the tunnel needs a little shaping if you want the tank to sit that low.

and you might have to modify the front of the stock seat.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda

Master builder pays us a visit!!  :D

Man, I almost signed onto customfighters just to suggest a couple of things.  I guess popping out the tank dents with ice is a moot point now.. but if you are still looking for a more "old school" petcock, the one from the yamaha raptor 660 will bolt right on.  And it's a manual one.  I switched just to get rid of the diaphragm/vac line which tends to fail on these bikes.

Edit: and are you going to mount a roller or something behind the countershaft sprocket?

Wow... That's a pretty cool build you've got going. :) Nice.

Nice TJ in the background there too. ;)

Thanks Boule.  your always helpful

2  problems with raptor prtcock.

one, i hate the stock location.

Two, well i guess pics describe this one better

http://i50.tinypic.com/2m3hc10.jpg

http://i47.tinypic.com/oqcd4o.jpg

If you look at the tank you see the dents have been heated. well i tried the  heat and ice trick. pulled them bout half way out. even used air duster up side down.

gonna freeze a big chunk of ice and try it again, but the dents were pretty bad.

Not really, the dude is dirt poor and has to barter with a junk dealer and ask for donations of raw material so he can fabricate all those parts.  I guess the term "starving artist" didn't come from nowhere.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Oldfeller on 01/30/10 at 23:05:03

Perry,

You have skils and will that are far beyond me -- you have hand fabricated your own bike which is a thing I dreamed of but never had time nor will nor money to do.

You've done it, with a little bit of funds and a whole lot of gumption -- my hat is off to you my friend.

Please keep a weather eye on the composite material adaptor bracket on the front rotor mount -- racers use similar composite bits and pieces and they can develop cracks in a race season or three -- one dude got into a crash up like a decade or more ago because his pit crew didn't notice a small crack in his state of the art composite piece that very slowly grew into a big crack.

The composite material had very slowly delaminated on him in a very creeping insidious fashion due to stress & vibration over time .... part of his issue was his crew kept repainting his bike and the crack grew about at the same speed as the paint build up over the crack did.  Now they have a racing rule against painting stressed (critical) composite pieces for that very reason.

Best to you dude, my hat is off to you !!

I'm not wrapping my head around it so great either.  Cool looking swingarm pivot, but on the chain side I still don't see how the redesigned swingarm will stay out of the way if the pivot point is the same.. we'll just have to see a photo of the built swinger and have one of those DURrrr OH YEAH moments.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda

pivot on chain side is different, swingarm is totally asymmetrical.

Good job, I'm sure that frame's as rigid as it ever was.  Have you worked out the geometry of the shock mount/swingarm/tire clearance and all that?

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Truckinduc on 02/02/10 at 17:16:31

Yep. old swingarm was same way, this one just uses the different wheel.

Shock will mount 1" closer to pivot for more leverage. it was too stiff.  Might even swap springs out.

there will be plenty of tire clearance to shock and swingarm. tire to seat swingarm might get close with both at full compression. might have to play with some bumpstops.

First "leaf springer" seat ever made?  :D

I was thinking a good way to finish pulling the tank dents would be a cheap/decent enough stud welder (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=98357) that comes with a slide hammer.  Or if you're good with a TIG welder on thin metal, use that to weld a few studs on.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda

You can rent a stud gun/ dent puller setup. Cut & grind the studs off.

Truckinduc, I absolutely LOVE that instrument cluster !!!

http://i46.tinypic.com/126ep7n.jpg

What instruments are they ?

I believe I can see an oil pressure gauge, and perhaps a fuel level meter...

Would the others be an oil temperature gauge and a voltmeter for the battery ?

Any chance of sourcing similar gauges ?

Thanks  8-)

Well I wish ihad more info for you but I dont. All i know is the gauges came out of WWII airplanes. They have raydon in them and could be toxic. The upper gauge is a mystery. It reads, "pointer must fall exactly within green zone"

Lower gauge is oil psi, fuel psi, and oil temp.  The fuel psi gauge will come in handy when im under boost.

I really like the size of the one ive got. Its off of my 80cc honda racebike.

too small and you loose braking force, leverage, and have less surface area and material to dissipate heat.

hope its not too small and i dont warp it with too much heat. I do tend to trail brake alot with the rear.

oh ya and im probably gonna use a big 4 pot caliper with it, if it will fit.

Most people who convert to chain drive go with taller gearing too.

That's going to be one fancy piece that seals your magneto cover back up!

Oil pressure and oil temperature + fuel level if you can fin a suitable plunger/float.
:)

Talk about the rear breake, I like the idea BUT if you brake too hard the drive belt will jump all over the place and you'll be without a rear brake (could be without a usable drive belt, too...)

I think Trucknduc will be using sprockets (17t  45t sprocket combo) so drive slippage shouldn't be a problem.  The only disadvantage I can imagine is that when the force on the chain changes direction, the braking will hit more suddenly as the lash is taken up, which will break the tire loose more easily.

Speaking of breaking the back tire loose, I'd LMAO to see someone "backing in" a Savage.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Truckinduc on 02/16/10 at 12:52:19

yes the disadvantage is lash in the chain, but shouldnt be anymore noticeable than accelerating through the chain. plus the braking force will go through the cush drive also.

there is less harmful force put on the chain during braking than accelerating. the big singles power pulses put much more stress on the chain.

think of it as assisted engine braking.

and with the stock rear tire i wouldnt really back it in, but i would light it up and slide out of turns.  Its a wonder how fun that is on dry rotted tires.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Boule’tard on 02/16/10 at 13:14:34

Yeah, I guess all you have to do is let off the throttle so the engine takes the slack out, then brake.  Just a small adjustment in braking technique.

Man, once you get that "Suzuki Savage" all finished and badass... temporarily put on a sissy bar, saddlebags, leather fringe and misc. cruiser crap and go sliding it around a go-kart track. I'd be laughing 2 days straight, especially if you passed a couple of sportbikes and sumos  ;D

thats just the actual gearing change. The tire is slightly taller than stock. by like 3/4"

Nice brake/chain drive setup you have there  :)

BUT
take care, if the chain gets a little loose and starts wobbling up/down a bit it'll gnaw on the brake caliper... :P

It's a cool looking light, would definitely be killer in OD green.  Is it off a scooter with an integrated headlight/speedo?  If so, can you see the speedo from the rider position?  It might look a bit silly if there's a guage there that can't be seen.  I don't know if you plan to glass over the speedo or not.. it might be a good place for another aircraft guage.  :D

here is what the headlight is off of. Honda Express moped.

http://i360.photobucket.com/albums/oo49/psilverz/honda_express_1977.jpg

Ya its got a speedo that reads up to a whopping 35 mph. Most likely do an aluminum cover rivited on.

Bike will eventually be turbo'd. when I have enough money for an oil pump, water pump, fuel pump, Fuel pressure regulator, intercooler and ignition management.

I need to find the same size light for the headlight. its got a 15 watt sealed beam. Id like to go with a 35W HID H4 bulb and matching bucket.

why exactly is that

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by bill67 on 02/22/10 at 16:00:12

Because its not on the wheel,Seems to me if that would work better cars would have brakes on the transmission,And its not as direct.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Truckinduc on 02/22/10 at 16:16:04

actually it works really well. Its more powerful than the brake being on the wheel.

Lots of cars, trucks, and buses have trans brakes. You have the advantage of gear reduction on your side. wouldnt work on most cars because they have open differentials.

The size rotor im using is HUGE for the brake setup. Id almost be willing to bet this rear brake setup will be more powerful than the stock savage FRONT setup.

Moto GP used this system in the 70's.  banned it because of chain breakage. Chains have gotten much stronger sense.

Actually, yes I have, but it's been quite a while ago, back in school.  Out teacher said it was optional, since it's a hazardous substance, but it's good to know, and not many teach it anymore.  Plus the "lead" sticks they sell these days are pretty much lead free I believe, mostly tin and something I can't remember.  Anyway, The Eastwood Company has a lot of supplies for this stuff, I used to get their magazines all the time:
http://search.eastwood.com/search?w=lead&p=Q&ts=custom

The gist of it is: you have to prepare the surface, you can use a flux made for it, but our teacher just had us use acid-core solder, it'll stick to the metal (clean metal!) also.  Heat the surface until the solder will melt and stick to it, then smear it over the surface with steel wool until you've got your area covered.  Then heat your stick of lead until it's soft enough to smear some dabs onto your area, keeping the area warm enough for the lead to stick.  Careful not to overheat it, it'll run off, and potentially ruin your shoes, not to mention the feet inside them! :o  Then you'll need something to shape the lead; a wooden paddle coated with either parafin or beeswax will work, beeswax is best since it doesn't smoke, and smells good!  Just melt a little puddle of wax with your torch, and smear the paddle around in it.  This keeps the lead from sticking to the paddle.  Use the paddle to shape the lead to your liking, then let it cool off.  Use a body file (http://www.eastwood.com/file-holder-flexible-with-mill-cut-body-file.html) to fine tune it, and wet sand to finish.  A power grinder or sander is not recommended, since it throws lead dust into the air, not good! :P
I'm sure I've left stuff out, I haven't done it in over 15 years, but that's the basics.  It's actually pretty easy, and has the advantage of durability, and the shrinkage/expansion rate more closely matches that of the metal underneath.  Our teacher recommended it over plastic for things like door pillars, and anything with a sharp corner likely to get chipped out if using plastic filler.

My $.02! :D

Nope no paint boule, other than clear coat.

THANKS JOHN D!

That really helps.  My only real concern was the tinning process and getting the lead to adhere to the steel. Most of the spots are gonna be very thin, about 1/16th at most.

So acid core solder will help it bond. Cant wait to try it tomorrow.  Better finish all my welding first though, I could just see all my hard work melting off.

ill take pics

You're welcome.  Hey, I actually gave advice!  Hope it works... :-/

If the solder doesn't work for some reason, try the commercial stuff, although the solder should work.  We alternately used some kinda acid flux, and applied the lead stick directly to the metal after wiping the substrate with the flux.  Not sure exactly what it was, I think some kind of mild acid.  Looked like water and had a slightly sour odor to it.

If you have to weld the tank later, as long as it's not near enough the lead to heat it up much, it shouldn't hurt it.  If I remember right, there's some kinda clay-like substance you can put in a line around areas you're welding on thin sheet metal, that acts like a kind of heat sink, to keep the heat from spreading to surrounding areas quite as much.  A welding supply shop should know more about it.

Edit: Well whadayaknow?  Eastwood has it too! http://www.eastwood.com/coldshield-thermal-paste.html

Made a threaded female adapter at school.  Not as easy as it looks, internal threads can be a pregnant dog.

http://i49.tinypic.com/2v8sflu.jpg

shaped the tank how I wanted it, and tacked it in.

http://i46.tinypic.com/4qm0z7.jpg

I oversized the threads slightly to account for the shrinkage due to welding. It slill was a little tight afterward, but a little tap magic and its all good.

Yo Truck!  I am running 520 sprockets and they mic out at .230" thick.  My old 530's off my GSXR are .430.  If your Duc sprocket is in between then it is probably for a 525 chain.

The super savage cam chains are sold out for this year as far as I know.
There was one for re-sale in the market place.

Manual externally adjusted cam chain tensioner (I drool)
Like to see what you come up with.
I've been perusing the GS fleabay lot trolling for goodies.
And noticed the cam chain adjusters, manual of course.
One of my ideas (a long time ago in a far...)
was to drill and tap the rear of the cylinder right behind the rear cam chain guide.  A bolt with a heavy captive spring pushing on the back of the guide might just be the ticket.  But then one of those adjusters... excuse me need a tissue.

well ive got it designed, just need to make a blueprint and make it.

Its really simple.

I used to make manual CCT's for honda VTR's. I couldnt keep up with the demand.

Only downside to this design is I have to drill and weld a bung in the block, but if you havent already caught on that doesnt really bother me.

Looks like jewelry dude.  CNC or old-skool machine work?

I'm not sure if that's a 17in motard wheel or not, but the huge-ass brake and fork legs sure make it look like one.

Its all manual. Had to get the bolt hole spacing and offsets spot on, then the rest was aesthetic and lightening.  Turned out real nice even though you cant really see it. Im kind of a perfectionist and I take pride in all of my work. sometimes it makes builds take WAY too long.

The wheel is from a GSXR. Forks are from a CBR 900RR, rotor form a Honda 954, and the caliper from a ZX10 R.

Hope Ill be able to do some stoppies in the future.

How many hours in that bracket?
I was a bit concerned with the lack of a radius on the flat with the ditch cut in it, running the length, but, on looking, that area is under compression, not tension. Very nice looking job.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Truckinduc on 03/22/10 at 12:31:00

Around 3 hours total over 2 days.

Most of the adapter is in compression. Its designed alot like an H beam connecting rod.

I may cut both brackets off the forks at a later date and machine and weld a new radial mount to the fork. Maybe.

Made a pin for my tube bender today. gonna make a roller for it tomorrow. Then Ill be able to start the swingarm when the tube gets here.

1" .125" wall DOM for the swingarm. stock frame size is around 1.1" so it should match up pretty well.

OK. Anyone know anything about Hurst Airheart calipers?

I have A single piston hydraulic one that I know wont work worth a nuts. apparently they never did.

ALTHOUGH if I could find another one id flip the second one and use it as a twin piston caliper.

With my rear brake setup the caliper doesnt have to be that strong to be effective due to the rotor's high rpm.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Truckinduc on 04/08/10 at 19:04:37

so I got a question for you savage motor guys.

I plan on building up the stock motor before I turbo It. Here are the plans.

stage 2 cam

extensive port and polish. reshape exhaust port, weld in where ill remove part of the rocker box.

5 angle valve job

adjustable ignition timing

adjustable cam timing.

All this will be free except the cam.

BUT i had a thought.  I plan on building a shorter connecting rod from aluminum for the boost.  To lower the compression down to 8 to 1.

Here is the idea. Would a slightly longer connecting rod work to bump up compression?  What about piston head clearance?

I would shave the head but there is already enough cam chain stretch untill I can get the upgraded chain.

So what do you think?

Also does the savage have a press together crank or a rod that bolts together at the lower rod end bearing?

Hey there bud!Awesome bike!I did something similar a couple years ago and thought you might like some pics. You did a great job!Mine had a 2000 GSXR 750 fork.I made adapters to use the stock front wheel and to mount one of the Gsxr front rotors on it with one Gsxr front caliper, stopped awesome. The engine was internally stock with a homemade air cleaner and the carbon fiber yoshimura muffler from the Gsxr. The swingarm was stock with the addition of the Gsxr rear shock and linkage, that thing rode great.I had an accident last July and can't ride anymore but still love bikes.I just wanted to praise you for doing such a good job and tell you to please be careful, wear your helmet and keep an eye on EVERYBODY else on the road.If I can help you holler at me.

I won't comment on the rideress... 8-) that's your property  8-)

BUT

I must point out, as a survivor squeegee squid rider, that if you expect to wrestle any serious road performance from the wonderful bike you're building,
the foot controls MUST be pulled much further back.

A good rule-of-thumb is the ankles should be on the vertical with the hip joints. Fine tune from there, back and forth, an inch or even less, to taste.

Really, once you tackle any decent bend at serious speed you'll not want to sit on your a$$ but push on the footpegs to control the bike.

8-)

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Truckinduc on 04/12/10 at 12:09:22

Oh yes I agree.  But in all seriousness one day for kicks I put on my leathers and drug knee on the savage.  The bike was pretty upset leaning over that far but it is possible.

One reason its keeping the forward controls is that my left knee cant bend.  ive got 80 degrees of motion in it. To ride anything I have with rearsets would take 140 degrees or more.

Its surprising how fast you can actually corner with a savage once you learn to adapt your riding style.

Ill get some knee dragging video once the bike is rideable again.

Here it is before welding. I decided to weld it together instead of bolting it together. Bolting it together didnt really make sense. I don need to take it apart, and it added complexity and extra unsprung weight.

OK, laffs done.

I'm sorry to read about your knee, I assume it must have been an accident... and quite an accident, I guess !

If you have an issue with your foot controls, just try to avoid pulling your hand controls too far forward and down.

What really ruins riding pleasure is to have elbows/navel/knees all cramped together with a mere inch to spare...
... and hands & feet way too far forward...
...NOT the way to go !

Even if you can't pull your foot controls back any more than so much, avoid straining to "look fast" with low clip-ons etc.; rather, enduro-style 7/8th in. bars may prove much more comfortable and more suited to your riding style...

Right now ive got on my 7/8" drag bars.  They are taller than the clubmans I made. Funny thing is the clipons are actually taller than the drag bars.

The previous riding position was pretty comfortable, but I am young.

I shattered my knee cap and had no medical attention for a year. It pretty much rendered my knee useless.  Im on the road to recovery now, slowly, but hopefully I can ride a streetbike again. I still have 2 left knee caps.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by RidgeRunner13 on 04/29/10 at 17:06:34

Can't advise you what to try without knowing what it is to begin with. :-/
Not knowing that, you need an adjustable timing light to check total timing advance. Bring the rpm up to where all advance will be in, then dial the light back until 0 degree tdc marks line up. read the total advance from the timing light. That's the only way I'll set the timing on a modified engine. 8-)

I wouldn't go past 36 degrees total advance to start with, that's about all most engines will tolerate without melt down. :'( :'( Don't ask how I know. $$$$$$$$$$$$poof ::)

well stock is 5* before TDC at idle and 30* at something like 4K or 5K.

So Id be at 34*.  Ill run high octane at first and keep an eye out for detonation.

Bike will be dyno'd soon. Might pit it back stock, other than head porting. Dyno it.  Put it how it is now, advance timing, carb, exhaust. and re dyno and compare.

seeing how close the sprocket and disk are, I'd be nervous about chain lube splashing onto the disk.   But I don't have you guys' build and ride experience, maybe it burns off fast or just never happens?   And it's the rear brake anyway.

this is an engrossing build in any case - thank you for showing it in such great detail.

Most chains these days are sealed, meaning an O ring or an X ring seals the lubricant inside the chain where its needed.

Oiling is not necessary, only an occasional cleaning and waxing.

I don't think you're likely to have torsional bending.
but that configuration would be stronger than just straight tubes.

Looks dangerous, in a good way. Diggin the blue headlight rim. Only negative thing at all i have to say is that visually, I still like your modified stock swingarm better. I know this may not qualify as a "rat bike" to a lot of people but this is THE rat bike in my mind. Its custom, dirty, grungy, and bada$$. Please dont go making it shiny and chromey. Maybe give caseyLA a buzz. If alternative and easily (not all hand made) parts could be cobled into a "kit" I think you could charge top dollar along with his absolutely splendid cafe racer kit. In fact...between you two and a few others I think a good business in customs could be started.

When I first started watching this thread, I thought holy cow!  Will it ever actually run?  Will it be SAFE on the road?  Is it gonna fall apart a mile from home?  But while watching this progress, and seeing your talent, I guess you have everything under control.

My favorite pieces are the fork brace and the seat (I hope the exhaust doesn't burn your a$$!)  I am personally not into that particular looking bike, so I won't criticize.  But I will say, if I saw it riding down the road, I would think someone just pulled it out of a junkyard.  I really don't intend that in a cruel way, I'm just honestly telling you what my personal perception would be if I saw it.  I would never think twice about all the time, labor, and love that went into making it.  BUT, this will definitely make me look at each and every bike I see in a different light.  I commend your skill and dedication!  And thank you for sharing it all!   (Oh, and I kinda like the blue on the headlight too!)

Oh -- two questions....  do you have a name for it, and are you gonna put anything (graphics/paint/...) on the tank?

you might want to try some length with the carb intake track/air filter. try using the stock rubber intake boot with the cone filter. if that mikuni tm40 is from a harley the ap jet will be way to large, you need around a #40, i think the harley used a #70. procycle has the ap jets if they are off back order.

You should be proud of yourself.

It maynot be a particular bike I would build or ride however, that is again what makes us all unique.

We come here to share as well as gather knowledge. You have shown myself your talent to again take some materials as well as a vision of a bike and thru all that this is a bike that has been transformed.

well the carb is too small to fit in the stock rubber boot, and I had to adjust the angle for clearance.

Im going to re made the aluminum boot as the one on it now was a prototype.

Ive got a 155 main in now and im getting smooth linear power though-out out the rpm range. Im going to set the accelerator pump next.

Got some dyno time next week, we will see how it goes.

thanks for the advice.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by dr1445 on 05/30/10 at 09:07:19

that is correct on the boot dia., when i set a tm40 up on the neighbors savage i used a step ring i had from my suzuki dr650 project. i seem to recall 142.5mj, 15pilot, a 40 ap nozzle jet with the needle on the 3rd slot down. this was on a stock bike.
edit: the ap delay can be set at the top of the rod with a Popsicle stick or .100". this is a good starting point and worked for me both on the dr and the savage but no dyno here.

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Truckinduc on 05/30/10 at 10:51:31

weighed the bike the other day. 152 lbs front, 145 lbs rear. WITH 1.5 gallons of fuel. I like that weight bias.

so with a half tank of fuel Ive got a 297 lb bike. I weigh 150 with full gear and backpack.

Mikuni Tm 42mm with accel pump.  The bore is Teflon coated,  fancy.

Its a little over carbe'd at the moment, but shouldn't be with the headwork I plan on doing.

I made a step ring out of derlin, but even with silicone I could never get it to seal right. It also never held the carb firmly.

Ive got a slightly ported exhaust port, full 1.625 exhaust, 4 degree ignition advance.  155 main seems to be pretty good. the dyno will tell soon.  Think im running a 17.5  pilot, could stand to go a size or two smaller. Know anywhere I can get some jets that dont cost an arm and a leg?

This winter I plan on welding up the exhaust rocker box in the head and re designing the exhaust port. Its honestly the worst design ive ever seen.

Anyone have a destroyed head laying around they would like to get rid of?

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda

try jeff at procycle, he did a lot of work developing a tm40 kit for the dr650. his pricing is about fair as it gets, plus he has the jets. it's the ap jet that cost and drilling one out is not an option, i got by with the 40 and 45, and you might want to pick up the tiny oring for ap jet while your at it. you should be ok with those and a 15pj.

well the battery cranked the bike 5 times in a row, then no more.

Im not satisfied so im starting over.

Im brainstorming ideas to mount a mechanical oil pump for the turbo.

Id really like to run it off the camshaft if the timing chain was higher quality.

Truck, I tried a UPS battery, then what I have now - a 7Ah small moped battery... tell you what - about a minute of total cranking is about what you get. Than again - if it doesn't start by then...
Now - if we could figure out a kickstarter somehow ...

I just painted the headlight and stuck that sticker on there for fun.

Rear wheel is off of my Ducati Monster M900 and the front is off a GSXR 600, I think.

This thing rides un-believably. Went on a riding trip this weekend and had no problem with the high dollar sport bikes in the corners. Straightaways are a different story. I can literally out corner a Ducati 999. Pics above.

Thanks! It's not rigid though,it has the rear shock and suspension linkage from a 2000 GSX 750.Its mostly hidden under the seat and the swingarm but if you look closely under the frame tube below the seat you can see part of the shock. The front fork and brakes and muffler are from the same bike.I made adapters to fit one of the front brake rotors to my stock wheel and the wheel to the fork.

I'm in awe of your fab skills, envious of your resources, and appreciate your sense of style. That's one VERY cool bike.

But it reminds me of an old joke. A guy claimed to have the ax George Washington used to cut down the fabled cherry tree.

"Really?" asked a friend.

"Yes," he replied. "Well, I mean, the blade has been replaced five times and the handle fifteen, because they wore out, but it's still Washington's ax."

I know it's really gratifying to transform an ordinary thing into something completely different and awesome (particularly when it waves a big middle finger at sanity), but was there a point where you thought you might get better results fitting the LS650 engine into a different rolling chassis? Not that I think you should have.

Im currently building a new swingarm for it, with linkage. Im also going to cut the neck off of it and steepen up the rake.

Im having some electrical issues. I had a friend build a new, very simple, wiring harness. It totally eliminates the decompression relay and solenoid.  With a full charge the bike cranks and rides fine. Im getting 12.89 volts at idle and any rpm, it doesnt vary at all.  Once i ride the bike say more than 10 miles, the battery does not have enough power to re crank. This problem existed the last few times before the new harness.

I have already replaced the stator once about 6 months ago. Ill do the resistance check again but I hope its the regulator rectifier instead. Its a unit off of a gsxr 750 I think.

Anyone have any clues? advice?

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda

The rear caliper is in my shop. Im making a cable for it soon.

The honda in the tank is actually a piece of aluminum that is embedded into the tank, and I like it so its staying. The paint on the tank is staying. Im just trying to figure out how im going to lay out and paint the tail.

Im tired of painting everything black, and dont you know, white is the new black.

Is your bike still having "charging" issues?  I had the same problem with mine when the decompression solenoid cable broke.  The reason the decomp solenoid is needed is because it takes stress off the starter motor on start-up.  My take is that most batteries will charge to a slightly higher voltage when run off a wall charger than the bikes recharging system (12.8V compared to 12.5V).  After a couple rides they drop back down to that lower voltage, and if it's not enough juice for the starter motor to turn it over, the engine sounds like its got a dead battery.  The decomp opens the exhaust so that the engine isn't fighting any pressure on start up. This lets the engine develop some momentum before the spark has to take over to do the work.

Well i found the problem to be a faulty ground wire from the RR.  Im very familiar with the decomp valve and solenoid, as I have deleted it. I have a manual lever on the bars for decomp, I just havent fitted a cable to it yet.

I replaced my bad battery and rode it an estimated 1400 miles with no cranking issues, even with a small scooter battery, WITHOUT any decompression actuation. Id say around 45 cranking's.

Just the other day it started loosing power again. I hope its another fault in the wiring. A friend built the wiring harness and used crimp connectors for some reason. Im going back and replacing each joint with solder and shrink wrap.

That swingarm tubing stiff enough for the job?

4130 Chromoly 1" od .085 wall. Its about 3 times stronger than the tubing the frame itself is made of.   Its about 8$ a foot.

I figured with all of your knowledge you wouldn't have overlooked it, but in the pictures I didn't see anything for the decomp solenoid.  It just mirrored my issue so closely.

I bought the bike cheap because it had problems starting. The guy had gone out and bought a brand new sealed battery, got tons of starts from it.  Just like yours then it started refusing to turn over.  He got frustrated with it (it was his only transportation option) and sold it to me after buying a 2006 bike.

After looking at it for a few days I found the electrical system working fine, and figured out that the solenoid cable was broken.  Bought a new one for $14.  Same battery, same wiring, same everything else, the bike has run without issue for (~1000 miles).  I felt bad because the repair was so cheap and took 10 min.

Good luck hunting down wiring issues, that's always the worst thing to find. :-/

That is some beautiful fab work there. As a machinist, my hat is off for you.  :)

It's not just the weld jobs, the machined parts are simply beautiful. Not too easy to machine those shapes. Do you own a CNC, or work with one?
If the pieces were done on a conventional mill, then it is even more incredible, because that takes some serious skill, especially the last part for the push rod. Is it stainless steel?

Title: Re: here is my savage, kinda
Post by Truckinduc on 10/04/11 at 05:14:18

Thank you.  Most of the parts are done manually.  I am a CNC machinist by trade and every now and then, when I get a chance, borrow a friends machine when it is not tied up.

The pushrod mount is just 1018, it looks pretty shiny though. I will not be painting this swingarm, just probably clearing it so it wont rust. eventually ill strip the paint from the frame too.

I got my rocker arm and pushrod made. Still need to make the bearing block and weld it to the frame.

I have alot more welding, cutting, and grinding to do to the frame. The bike needs to be ridable by thursday, thats 2 days. Lots of work to do. I can handle the fab work, its the wiring issue I hope I can get resolved.

Swingarm is done (for now). Im going to ride it as is and determine if I need to brace it further. Everything is an experiment on this bike.

What is the diameter and wall thickness of the exhaust header?

Is it stainless?

I'll bet your exhaust system weighs 1/5 of what the stock set up weighs.

After the recent thread here about fork braces, I still think with your awesome skills, you could make a great fork brace for us, sell them a little cheaper than tkat, help a bunch of people out (who don't want to fork out so much dough) and make a pretty penny for yourself....

I don't comment on this thread much, but always enjoy your updates.  Awesome work!

You have a unique skill set to be able to visualize what you want and then do it.
One question- at what point does it did it cease to be a savage? ;D

I guess it's a matter of the VIN numbers.  ;)

beautiful bike and CNC work. What seat are you using for your early bobber set up? before you got your mono shock? thanks for any any advice

We'd love a clip of it running.  Especially with it goin' down th' road or round a track!

Are you just going with the front brake?  I still don't see the rear setup.

Yep...this fellow did some incredible work.

When you pull up these old threads......you may not have any luck getting a response from the fellow that posted them.  The fellow that built this bike has not logged onto this forum in more than 3 years.

Heck of a read!
This bike build went right on into next level.

Maybe an admin could try emailing the user at the registered address to prod for an update?

I think not, did not leave here in the best of circumstances.

I think he's still on customfighters.com but I'm not sure if he still has or works on this bike.   I love what he did and how it evolved.  Another really talented and creative builder.

People who have never tried that kind of work don't realise the enormous amount of work involved.

Tinypic ruined this thread and his customfighters.com thread which is a real shame.
