Title: 4 Hole Bracket Just Ahead of rear Wheel?
Post by Routy on 11/28/09 at 17:07:47

Just noticed that bottom 4 hole pattern bracket just ahead of the rear wheel. Anyone know what bolts on there ? I don't know of a center stand available for this bike, but sure would be handy to have one. Maybe I'll make one, bolt it on there,.... when I don't have anything else to do :-/

Do you drag your pegs in corners? If so, designing a c/stand that doesnt hit before the pegs may be a challenge. You might also want to just put some hard wire down there & ride a few days & see if you drag it going over things you pass over every day, like speed bumps, etc. These bikes have very limited clearance. so plan ahead.

Thanks,....good thinking on the clearance. I doubt that I will be draggin pegs anytime soon. That kinda stuff was neat 40 yrs ago, but not anymore. But I just mite have to check this out,... and design a stand for these bikes.

That bracket is for the canister that is on California model bikes

You could build a center stand like old Harleys and Indians had.
It was a flat bottom loop of steel that hinged near the rear axle.
It swung down to position itself under the rear wheel, then retracted up to be held by a spring clip at the fender. Properly don it would give a really old time look.

Phelonius's idea would probably work better, I'm not sure just how stout that little bracket is.  I tried to jack my bike up under them, and they had an alarming amount of give to them. :-/

M'mmm, where did my post of last nite go,.....I posted exactly that,....that I'm not sure that bracket is heavy enough. It is just stamped sheel metal. But maybe a matching plate on top will sandwitch the frame w/ it. We'll see.

The brackets with the holes might be ok, but if I remember right, they're just attached to a flat strap of metal that bridges the framework.  When I started to jack the bike up, that started to flex. :P

Cut it off ya don't need it.... just more weight.
Just one more thing to get in the way

I checked it out, and the individual tabs are weak and bend/flex easily, the left side is bolted to the bike, and not all that sterdy, but the right side is welded to the muffler bracket, and seems to be perdy sterdy  ;).  So, I'm building a center stand off of it,.... as the way I will be plating the whole bracket assy together, I believe it will be plenty strong to support it. I have a good start on it already, 1/4" double plates made, and drilled. I'm making the round bushings now that will be welded to the plates, a relative easy job on my little 10" metal lathe :)

I knew there was a way to do a center stand.  I asked about it some time ago.  I'll be interested to see what you come up with. ;)

It was all I could do to get a URL here.
Anyway, heres the start I have on the stand, if you can figure it out :o

You're a genius ! I sure wish I could do that.

Lets see, ......you're looking at the stand and the bushing it turns in while it is still in the vice,...because its very hot yet from heating and bending the 5/8 solid round bar. The bushing was then welded to the 1/4' plate that is bolted to the 4 hole bracket.

The stand is now temporarlly on the bike. But I have to shorten it because the wheel is 3" off the floor.  And it needs the over center stops trimmed a little. And last of all it nees an overcenter spring to hold it up.

One thing is for certain, I ain't wastin no more time on tryin to post a pic here !

The main reason mine's still there is because I've got a couple Harbor Fright magnets (see my sig. :D) bolted to it.  Works pretty good at most stoplights, although there's still a few stubborn ones. :P

The center stand is working and useable, but I have to conceed the emissions mount is flexy. I really won't really be satisfied w/ it untill I get some more support to that mount. W/o a lift of some kind, that is going to be a real challenge as it is hard to see just what can be made to work. I need a break now :o
