Title: What is best Main/Pilot jet for Sporty+cone mod?
Post by djpennin on 11/08/09 at 05:51:11

i recently did the cone air filter mod + sportster exhaust.

my bike isnt running so well anymore.  when i first start it sputters alot, and i noticed the pipe is getting super blue (is that from heat?)

it's a 1996 , and i'm in Austin,TX

can anyone recommend:

Main Jet size ??
Pilot Jet size ??
Pilot with holes (swiss cheese) or without?
And Number turns for Air/Idle mixture (i know this will differ, but should i just use 1.5 as starting point)

thanks all!

With the air cleaner and muffler mod you have leaned out even further than the manufacturer did, so yes, you need to adjust the carb or replace jets or both. I am in New Mexico and I have a Jardine with a K&N air filter. I have 52.5 pilot and a 152.5 main with the air/fuel screw turned out about 1 and a half and she runs pretty good on that.

My elevation is just under 5000 ft.

But please do not think that my set-up would be ideal for you, it depends a lot on riding style and elevation.

i have the debaffled sporty muffler and reg k&n filter on my '95 in south florida.

52.5 pilot and mine already had the 152.5 in there, so we left the needle as is....runs so much better now!

she didn't sputter, but her backfire got worse(u'd think i'd love that!!) but i knew it wasn't good for her heart lol and i'm not sure how the pipe did as it's wrapped....

Just as another tid bit of info, I'm at 200m, 52.5 pilot no holes, and 150 main with screw 1/4 turn back from alll the way out. I had the 152.5 main in back when I was having your problems and she screamed at WOT!  ;D
so be sure to keep it in and work on adjusting the others  ;)

I'm pulling the bottom of the carb off tonight to take a look.

i found that i had a 152.5 main laying around so we'll see what i have in there.

thanks

Hey Guys I know this question has been beaten to death but what pilot and main jets did a 1995 Savage come with from the factory?

So i looked at everything and the main jet was 145 and pilot is 52.5.

So i put in the 145, is still runs greatbut at idle or when slowing dow it sputters an backfires. I have the screw out 2 turns now, still pretty crappy

any ides?

so the main was a 140
the pilot was 52.5

i changed the main to 152
the pilot stayed 52.5

bike still runs chopper from closed to 1/2 throttle.

do i need to increase the pilot?

I really recommend cutting down the spacer. I personally havent settled on 2 or 3 washers in place of the spacer yet but the spacer as it is is no good. Shave it down or replace with some washers. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
